Chapter 4 - Escaping to the Sewers

I ran further to the middle of the empty land for some time before I finally realized that I had reached the river shore. My surroundings were all pitch black so I had no choice but to follow the direction of the river by running on the shore since it would give out a splashing sound as I run on it.

At one point, the water current noise kept on going louder that I eventually could barely hear my own footsteps on the shore. Just then, I tripped on something and almost fell off, but it was thanks to that that I realized I have reached the river end on the empty land.

I could hear a very loud watery noise from near me which led me to assume that it was the river current flowing down to the sewer. I immediately went to the middle of the river and braced myself before being taken away by the current and finally slid down very quickly just as I began to feel like I entered some kind of tunnel.

As I slid down in a very quick pace, I desperately tried to get some air so that I would not drown, not to mention that I felt every part of my body is completely in contact with the water.

About some time later, I fell off as the surface below me ends, and I splashed hard into a deep pool of water. I must have at least swam upward for about nine feet before I reached the water surface. I breathed deep and hard, before I realized that my surroundings had light, although a very dim one.

I gave out a relieved sigh once I finally realized that had entered the sewers, and swam slowly towards the edge which had a shallower depth – barely about a foot deep, then finally stood up to check if my equipment did not get any serious damage. Fortunately, all of my weapons were still functioning, and miraculously I also did not lose my glasses or my watch.

If the sewers had a shorter height from the base to the ceiling, then the lighting would probably be brighter. It might be about nine feet of height from the base to the ceiling, and I guess that the middle of the sewers had the depth of more than ten feet, otherwise I might have touched the bottom of it when I fell down earlier.

The width of the sewers might have been around twelve feet from the edge to the other one, four if I start from where I fell off. About each thirty feet of distance on the ceiling was a hanging lamp giving out dim light, and about twenty feet towards in front of me, was a left turn. Since I did not have any choice, I headed towards the turn to continue looking for any exit to the city.

I walked with a slow pace cautiously while checking my surroundings for once in a while towards the turn, then I continued to walk with the same method until I came across a T-junction to my right side – ahead of me was a long straight way, while to my right side was a stairs with a considerably narrower and shallower waterway in the middle of it leading to an upper level.

I decided that I should not stay in the water for very long, so I chose to turn right and walked up the stairs. It did not take long for me to reach the upper level, and it was a long straight way up ahead of me from where I stood. Again, I walked with the same method until I ended up in another left turn where I decided to sit and rest for a while since the ground was dry.

Just when I was about to sit, I felt a big rumble right on top of me while also hearing a person's scream nearby. I rushed to follow the source of the scream, and after a while, I found a sewer grate on the upper side of the wall. I tried to take a peek to the outside from it, but it was a little bit too high for me. So, I jumped and hold the grate bars to see what was happening outside.

As I grabbed and held on to the grate bars, I saw a man dressed in a full police uniform and gears firing his handgun towards something that I could not yet see.

"N-no! Get back!" the man screams in terror, "Away from me! Away!" as he ran and fired his handgun.

What shocked me though, was him getting shot by a purple-colored beam straight through his body, succumbing him to the ground. He was already at death's door, yet still desperately tried to reach his handgun, and even firing a couple of rounds, but this time he got another shot right to his head.

I was frozen, unable to respond of any kind. Right after that, I saw something approaching his dead body although I was still not sure what as the only thing I just saw was a slender shadow.

Just then, I got to partially see what was approaching the body – a pair of grotesque slim legs. I leaned my head, and pushed myself forward to get a clear view of the figure but I accidentally dropped my handgun to the ground, making a loud echoing noise.

"Crap!"I said as I was shocked, and the pair of legs immediately faced towards me. I jumped down to take my handgun and made my run from the grate as fast as I can towards the right turn ahead of me.

Just as I made the turn, an explosion came from the direction of the grate followed by a loud thud, and a couple of slow, loud steps. I leaned my head a bit at the turning corner to see what the thing was that made the loud step noise.
