Chapter 29 - Vigilante: Stress Test 3

Author's note: Sorry for the late chapter, it was supposed to go out last night but there was a small hiccup with the publish timer (I probably fucked it up somehow)

"GG"

After landing his kick, Riley performed a flip in midair before landing on his feet.

The guard's momentum coupled with Riley's kick caused the guard to tumble down the stairs, eventually smashing into the brick wall.

Quickly, Riley cast on the now-unconscious thug, before heading towards the fancy door.

Obviously the wise thing to do was to recuperate and replenish his mana, but he knew that he had wasted enough time and had to act immediately. Opening the door, Riley saw that the room was… empty. Although it showed signs of occupation, there wasn't actually anyone in the room.

The room had a similar theme to the rest of the floor — a big mahogany table in the center, with several comfortable-looking leather seats surrounding it. The table had intrinsic designs etched into the wood, giving it a very premium and expensive look.

Other than that, the room had several bookcases and marble statues, and a large chandelier in the middle as the room's main source of light.

'Where the hell did they go? There's no way they could escape; this room doesn't have any windows, and the door I came from seems to be the only entrance. Did I fail the mission? No way right? If I had actually failed, there would be a "Mission Failed" notification.'

He closed the door behind him as he stepped in. As he was looking around, he snapped his fingers.

'That's it! The nightclub had a secret room, and I would be greatly surprised if there wasn't one here too.'

Riley started -ing the switches, door, statues, chandelier, bookcases, and even flower pots around the room, and yet, nothing. Finally, Riley -ed the mahogany table.

"A special table, custom-made for the People's Brotherhood. Has careful etchings depicting historical scenes on the outside, and an interesting secret on the inside. Can be accessed by solving the puzzle."

On reading this, Riley gasped in surprise, and started fiddling around the table. Using his unbroken arm, he started tracing each outline, and moving any protrusion he could find. Starting on one side, he slowly made his way around the entire table. As he was doing this, his burner phone started ringing.

"Hey, how's it going R? How was Lorenzo? Did he do the thing where he punches so fast that you can't see it until you get blown away by the air pressure?"

"Yeah, he did. Why didn't you warn me about him? I could've died!"

"Hey, I wanted to keep it fun for you! Plus you're alive, aren't ya? That means the mission's complete, right?"

"Yeah… about that. After I took the big guy, I entered the fancy meeting room and they're nowhere to be seen. I think they've hidden themselves in the ta-"

"Fuck. Shit. Stay right there, I'm on my way."

"What do you mean? They haven't escaped, I know they're in the hidden compartment, and I'll-"

"No, you don't get it. It's a one-way safe. The fact that they've locked themselves in there means there's no way you're getting them out. And if they've resorted to that, it means that they've called in backup to their location. That means that there's an entire squad on their way, right now, with the intent of taking you out.

"What?"

"Stay where you are, I'm on my way. Barricade the door and survive for as long as you can."

"Ok, I'll try my best."

Riley had just finished wrapping his broken arm and creating a shoulder arm sling, when he heard several cars pull up. Judging by the amount of shouting going on, there might as well have been a small army out there. And the only thing standing in between them and the two Underbosses was Riley.

Due to the early warning from Mr. X, Riley had prepared several safety measures and defenses to slow them down, just like from the Home Alone movies. However, because he had had such little time, he wasn't able to create elaborate traps; just simple ones that would hopefully at least buy him some time.

For example, Riley had boarded both the main entrance and back entrance with all the tables and chairs that he could find. After that, he had destroyed as much of the staircase as he could. Since his bat had been smashed up, Riley had had to resort to using tools that he could find in the kitchen. It had taken a while, but he had been able to smash up the staircase so much that it was covered in splinters. Finally, Riley had also unscrewed all the light bulbs in the entire building. The thugs would have to fight with only flashlights on their side. After he had finished, he had shut himself in the meeting room to lick his wounds.

About several minutes after he heard the cars pull up, he heard banging on both entrances, followed by several gunshots. After a brief moment of silence, there was more shouting and banging noises on the door, this time louder and harder. Suddenly, the banging stopped, replaced with the sound of a car engine and tires screeching. Soon there was a loud crash followed by cheering, as the door and its barricade yielded to the power of a modern automobile.

'That didn't take very long. Hopefully the stairs delay them longer than the door did.

Checking the burner phone, Riley saw that he'd received a new text from Mr. X.

"2 b safe, if ur caught, snap d phone n crush it. Thx. Im almost there."

Putting the phone back into his pocket, Riley heard more shouting, and the sound of grunting and creaking wood.

Peering into the keyhole, he could see that one of the thugs had made his way up, probably from being boosted up by his colleagues. The thug who had made it up started pulling the rest of his team up and soon, there were four of them on the second floor. The first guy turned toward the stairs and started addressing the remaining thugs.

"You four stay down there. Just pass it to me."

The thug reached down, and retrieved an object that the guys downstairs had handed to him.

'What is he doing with that thing? What even is t-'

Suddenly, Riley realized what it was, and with a swift movement he leaped away from the door, vaulted over the table, and hit the ground, before hearing a soft "Say hello to my little friend."

It had taken Riley a few seconds due to the distance, but the object that the thug was holding was an M4 Carbine, which was currently spraying it's entire magazine through the door and around the entire room. Riley had decided to hide behind the table because he knew that the bosses were hiding in it, and for the thug to be so confidently spraying bullets through the door it obviously meant that the safe room was bulletproof.

While the thug was still shooting, Riley felt his pants vibrate. Pulling out the phone, he saw a message from Mr. X.

"When he reloads, charge out the door. We'll get them together."

Just as he finished reading the text, the onslaught of bullets stopped. Without hesitation, Riley charged forward. Busting the door open, Riley could see one thug pointing his flashlight at the door, while the man with the gun was reloading. The two remaining thugs were the first to react, immediately reaching for their guns.

Without giving them any time to prepare, Riley started charging towards them. As he was doing so, one thug had already unholstered his pistol. Riley pulled out his gun and, activating , was able to one-tap the thug's hand, effectively disarming him. Jumping up, he used to blink forward and land right in front of them, then used to take them down. As they had been standing very close to the stairs, all of them fell and started tumbling down towards the first floor. As the thugs were struggling to get back up, Riley heard four suppressed gunshots.

"Yo kid, nice job."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"HAHAHA, so you're telling me he broke your arm with just one hit? You're lucky your arm's still attached to your body!"
"What the hell is he? He smashed my bat with a punch. A PUNCH."
"Yeah, that's my bad. I didn't know that they would be bringing out the big guns so quickly. Kinda scary."
As they were talking, Riley and Mr. X made their way into the meeting room. Upon entering, Mr. X walked to the table and placed both his hands on it.
"Yeah, I was trying to figure out how to open this when you called and warned me about the situation."
"No worries kid, I know how to open it. After all, I'm the one who designed this room."
Walking to the other side of the table, Mr. X placed his hands on the edge and fidgeted around until he heard an audible click. He walked to another side and did the same thing. After having done this four times, he made his way back to the original side and gestured Riley to the opposite side.
"Alright, on the count of three, pull the edge."
"Right here?"
"Yup. One, two, three."
Upon pulling each end of the table, each side of the table extended and slowly lowered itself as the center of the table rose and revealed a solid metal body.
After a few seconds of shifting, the table clicked into place. Hopping on top of the table, Mr. X grabbed onto the wooden panel at the top of the now-exposed metal cage and twisted it counter-clockwise until it loosened and popped out. This revealed a hatch similar to what you would see on a submarine.
"So here's the deal. This hatch leads to a secret room, and there's no way to open it from the outside when it's been locked. The Brotherhood will be sending more guys over when they realize that the first team has failed. Over and over until they take us out. We'll have to camp here until the guys inside either go nuts, or die. That'll take five hours tops, since that's all the oxygen reserve has enough for. So, here's the plan. You take care of this floor while I-"
"Wait, Mr. X. It's not impenetrable. I can open it."
Riley looked at Mr. X, toolbox in hand.
"Picking time: 2 hours"
"Accept/Decline?"
