"Come on! I have a whole shelf of those books. I got them when I was writing a book about pregnant ladies…" Mike said.
Jennifer looked at them like she was looking at some foolish people. How could they not understand a single word of what she said? And how did Mike even come to the conclusion that she was in self-denial? What did Jayden actually tell them?
Elina suddenly returned and shouted standing near the door, "Mike asked you to not stay here for long as it might get chilly when it is dark. Also, drink herbal tea, it is really tasty! I drank some already, so trust me!"
What is with these people and herbal tea? She lifted her hand to push it away once again but later she did not have the mind and lifted the cup near her mouth. The aroma filled her nose and she felt slightly better.
She really had a severe headache and once she took a little sip of that tea, she became ok. She sat on the sofa and tried to stay calm for a moment. Right now, it didn't matter how much she shouts, she cannot find anything about her parents.
She needs to wait patiently for Jayden to return. Until then she decided to know more about Jayden and Aiden's life from Mike. She knows for sure, if Jayden is around he would never allow her to know anything about them. They seriously live their life with too much secrecy and always stayed on high alert. Even pretending as only one person existed with two names.
It was not like her family was not similar to theirs, but still, Jayden always tried to avoid speaking about his family whenever she asked. When she walked in, she saw Elina and Mike baking a cake.
"It looks like you both got accustomed to each other way so easily. I feel like I am left all alone by myself." Jennifer complained.
"I am learning how to bake lemon pound cake. Mike is teaching me! He said Aiden loves them." Elina jumped up with excitement.
"Mike, you know about them a lot, right? You must know about their past too, I mean even before you adopted them both?" Jennifer tried to start the conversation.
Mike looked hesitant to speak about the twin's past. So Jennifer added, "I am his wife and I just came to know that Jayden has a father yesterday. How unlucky I am? I didn't even know about you. I am really hurt! If only, I had known earlier..."
Looking at how Jennifer is acting a little weird today, Elina lifted her eyebrows to ask her what was going on. Jennifer warned her to stay quiet with a glare.
"Oh! Yes. I want to know more about Aiden's story. Before you came, Mike was telling me about Aiden and Jayden's childhood stories." Elina said.
"I am going back to my room. Anyways you both have a good time. I understand that I am not welcome here. Mike will only talk to you and will tell you all about their childhood. It looks like he doesn't like me at all and I feel like I did burden Mike by coming here." Jennifer turned around pretending that she was going to walk away.
Mike saw her sad face and felt hurt. He doesn't know why but when he spoke with Elina, he did not mind sharing anything with her. But with Jennifer, he was finding it a little difficult to say anything. He could not determine whether she will turn into their friend or foe.
He looked at her back cautiously and said, "It is not like that! You both are equal to me. So what do you want to know?"
"Everything!" After she said that, Jennifer felt like she let the cat out of her bag so fast. So she kept her head down and said, "I mean, I also want to know everything about their childhood days and where they went to school, college… All their funny moments...Were they good kids or slightly naughty? I want to know all about both of them in a detailed way. Is it wrong to know about my husband and my brother-in-law's past?"
She lifted her head and looked at Mike with innocent eyes. "Also, I want to know about my sister-in-law too."
When she finished speaking, Mike almost let his guard down against her. Only a handful of people know about the twin's sister. If Jayden had already revealed about his sister to Jennifer, doesn't that mean he trusts her completely? Maybe they both are already deeply in love and she could even help him find out details about their missing sister if she knows about that accident.
"Sit down, next to me! I will answer all of your questions one by one. Elina, come on, you too… The cake will take at least twenty minutes to bake. By then I will try to shorten and tell you about these two kids and how I met them on a fateful night."
Elina put the timer on the oven and walked towards them. Jennifer sat next to Mike with slight irritation. The acting she did in front of Mike was not her favorite. She did not want to deceive the innocent Mike, but she was now left with not many options. Her parents disappeared and she felt like it might all be because of these two brothers.
"When I went on a mission and failed horribly, I was afraid to face my father. So I was searching for a place to hide, at that time I found them in the middle of the road trying to search for their sister with severe burn wounds on their body.
Their parents were already dead when I reached there. They were actually burnt alive in their car which was pushed down the hill. It happened almost twenty years ago. I heard that they were all going on a vacation when the car hit them from behind without any warning.
Aiden said that it looked like they were intentionally trying to harm them.
When the car hit them once and the other car driver noticed that not much damage was done, they once again tried to push them off the cliff. And the second time, they succeeded and achieved what they wanted.
But Jayden said that it might be an accident and was not intentionally done. As he could not recall being hit from behind twice. Jayden somehow managed to climb out of the car and pulled his sister along with him. He placed her on a grass patch and went down to help his brother out. But by the time he pulled his brother out of the car, the fire had spread faster around the car.
How much ever they tried to save their parents, they couldn't. After all, they were just small kids, they both did what they could. The car burst in a few minutes and they both saw their parents get burned alive. They couldn't save them both."
Mike stopped and rubbed the tears from his eyes. Elina was now almost sobbing while leaning against Mike's right shoulder. Mike patted her back and tried to calm her before continuing his story. Jennifer sat there without any expression.
"Even if I was a few minutes early, I could have done something. I always felt guilty that I was not there for them both at that right moment to help them. If only I was a little more early and noticed that incident, we could have even caught the culprit who made them suffer because of that accident." Mike stopped and walked away to control his emotional instability.
He drank some water to bring his emotions back to normal. He looked at Jennifer's expressionless face and then at Elina who already started to snivel. He still could not read Jennifer's thoughts. He took a tissue roll and gave it to Elina. Elina took them and tore one paper. She sniffled without minding about her repute.
Once Elina was done, she looked at Mike and asked, "Then what happened? Did they not find their sister where Jayden left? We saw a letter which said Aiden went to find his sister."
Mike closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Jayden did not tell Jennifer about his sister. No! NO! No! What did he do? He should have never talked about that accident to them. Why is he so foolish? Since he had already started it's better to tell everything and ask Jennifer's help. Maybe after hearing their story, she might agree to even ask her father about who took Denee?
"No! They did not. Their sister, Denee, was not there where Jayden placed her. She disappeared and they both are still trying to find her." Mike concluded, sadly.
