Chapter 8 - Brains Versus Brawn (and Unpredictability)

Magnus confronted the great metal bear that slaughtered all that dare challenge it. Magnus ran up to it, coking his rifle. Magnus fired where he knew the armor would be the thinnest. There his bullets would have the greatest chance of penetrating the tank and killing the crew. Magnus thought killing the crew would be easier than destroying the tank.

Even though omniscience had been granted him, Magnus still had to apply that knowledge he now had. Using his all-knowing powers in a stressful situation would be quite hard to do. After all, he still needed to think. Dying didn't make Magnus a supercomputer.

Magnus took three shots at the tank, the barrel of his bolt-action rifle only an inch from the armor. A man then popped out of the tank and took a magazine's worth of shots at Magnus, two connecting, one getting lodged in his shoulder and the other going straight through his wrist. Magnus was momentarily stunned by the searing pain, doubly overwhelming as the last time he was shot. When the Deutschlander ran out of shots to take, he retreated into the tank safety of the tank once again. Magnus thought, "Hiding inside the belly of such a beast? What cowardice! I'm out here fighting alone, and without any protection to boot!", and then promptly realized something.

Magnus realized that he could open the hatch and shoot all of the crew members. Better yet, he could shoot the ammunition compartment and kill them that way. Magnus then made this plan of highest priority, and set to execute it.

Magnus ran up to the tank and jumped onto it, attempting a climbing expedition. Magnus, not being the most athletic man, and also having been shot twice, slipped and fell onto his back, the breath fleeing his body like rats from a burning building.

Magnus tried to get up, but was unable to. The tank then slowly backed over Magnus' body, promptly making Magnus into a fleshy pancake. Magnus entered that warm, relaxing place again.

"How did I get back here? What's going on?!", Magnus thought, as he had no voice. Magnus was then dropped onto a scene happening in the World of the Present.

"So, how much carnage can this bomb produce?", said a man in Deutschlandian commanding officer's garment, as he interrogated a man with grey hair in a lab coat.

"I believe this bomb will have enough destructive power to level a city!", the scientist proclaimed, striking a pose.

"Knock it off with all the silly mad scientist poses.", The commanding officer reprimanded, and continued just the same way as before the pose, "And exactly how much time and resources will you need to complete it?"

The scientist then proclaimed, having already ran the numbers, "It will cost 3.8 billion Reichsmark. As I have previously stated, it will be well worth the investment, as it has the power to..."

The officer immediately interrupted, "You already gave me the pitch! I will give you the funding you need, just start work as soon as possible."

Magnus was terrified.

"A bomb that can level a whole city?! This is terrible! I need to stop the production of this atrocity!"

Magnus was then woken up by a soldier from his homeland.

"Hey you! You doing OK?"

Magnus then stood up, all of his wounds were healed. Magnus saw the tank about fifty paces away. It was now destroyed, presumably blown up from the inside by an anti-tank grenade. Magnus stood there, his disheveled appearance perfectly matching the emotions of disappointment welling up inside him.

Magnus then turned to the stranger. It was a medic who had been running around the field in search of wounded men to patch up. As soon as Magnus looked at him for more than 10 seconds, Magnus knew everything about him. This medic was from the western portion of the UPC. He was raised as a single child by his father and mother. He had multiple half-siblings, and this eventual discovery lead to a shattering of his family life in middle school. After several failed suicide attempts where he either couldn't go through or he didn't die, he decided to join the army, giving his life to a noble cause rather than wasting it. After five years as a medic, he was shipped of to Europa, and was now fighting his twelfth battle in this war.

Magnus then learned the medic's name. It was Russel. Russel Franklin.

"Yeah, Russel, I'm fine. If we don't move soon, we're going to get killed, so let's get going."

Russel, astounded by a complete stranger knowing his name, payed no heed, since stranger things have happened, and followed this new recruit. Although, this recruit didn't really seem like a recruit at all. He knew exactly where to go and what to do.

Magnus and Russel crossed the entire battlefield unscathed. Magnus swiftly put an end to the lives to his foes, becoming more and more numb to the rush from before.

"The rendezvous point is that way!", Russel shouted, as Magnus looted the bodies of the Deutschlanders while great explosions sounded on the battlefield. Magnus was in desperate need of more automatic rifle ammo. Even though he had not missed his mark once, he still consumed the half-full magazine of ammo before they had gotten halfway to their current location.

The buzzing of a plane was heard overhead. Russel covered his head while Magnus screamed, "Ah-ha!", as he had finally found more ammo for the more destructive weapon he had on him. Russel was shocked by Magnus' pure nonchalance concerning the great flying machines that were making a great impact on war for the first time in history.

Magnus said to Russel, "Alright, let's go.", as he loaded and cocked the automatic rifle, now rocking two more full magazines of ammo for the gun.

Magnus and Russel made it to the rendezvous point without encountering another person on the way. As soon as they got there, they were greeted by hot food.

Russel and Magnus immediately started to scarf down the food. Magnus ate too fast, and so Russel did the Heimlich on Magnus. After three or four thrusts to the gut, Magnus spit up the bit of cheese that was clogging his airway.

"Thanks.", Magnus said, not looking at Russel, feeling very awkward as he knew Russel's life story, but Russel didn't even know Magnus' name.

"It's literally my job. No need to thank me.", Russel responded, blushing from the thanks of his new-found hero.

Magnus broke the couple seconds of silence by adding, "Oh yeah. My name is Magnus.", and successfully continued the conversation.
