Lady An stepped forward as well. "You know I go wherever you go," Lady An said. Evelyn nodded.
"I'll call you to let you know how I'm doing," Evelyn promised her. She walked back to the sofa and grabbed her purse and briefcase. Just as she reached for the small bag with undergarments, Zain shot his hand out to grab it from her. She relinquished it to him.
Mingxi nodded at the other staff members. Mingxi walked out the door with Zain and Evelyn followed. When she got to the door she turned.
"Thank you again, goodbye," she with sincerity. She heard the murmurs of goodbye behind her but she followed Zain out the door.
The sun was now high in the sky as it was afternoon. When she got to the car Zain opened the passenger side door for her. She got in placing the briefcase on the floor between her legs and her put her purse on her lap. He closed the door behind her when she was settled.
"Mingxi," Evelyn said as she rolled the window down.
"Do you want to keep the car?" Evelyn asked her when Mingxi stepped next to car.
"No, boss," Mingxi shook her head. The car that was sitting in the driveway was a company car given to her by the Cheng Global Corporation.
"I just need to grab some stuff from it." Mingxi said as she rushed to the car to grab her stuff from it.
When she walked away, Zain put one hand on the top of the car and leaned down to look Evelyn in the eye.
"Where to?" he asked her.
"Oasis," She said to him. He raised an eyebrow.
"Do they know you're coming?" he asked. She nodded her head. He took out his phone. Scrolling through it he clicked on something before bringing his phone to his ear. He straightened as he made the call.
"Manager Lau," he said in his deep business voice. He paused presumably listening to the man's greeting on the other end of the line.
"I'll be heading over shortly. I need you to prepare the back entrance. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to be discreet," Zain said.
Without waiting for a reply he hung up. Evelyn sighed. As much as Zain was kind, sweet, and a little bit silly in front of his closest friends and family his serious side could only be described as a no nonsense, intimidating, impatient jerk.
He was just like his brother, Jinhai in that way. The biggest difference was that his brother was not known to be friendlier or jovial with the most people in general.
Soon after, Mingxi joined them. She got into the backseat while Zain walked to the driver's side.
He put the car in drive and made his way out of the driveway. When he got through the gate he made a left down the street to get onto the highway. He turned the radio on to a popular radio station.
None of them spoke as Zain drove the car toward Oasis. In her purse, Evelyn's phone rang. Zain reached over to lower the music until it was just barely audible.
She pulled it out seeing her Uncle Wai's name appear, she picked it up.
"Uncle," she said. Uncle Wai was her father's best friend. They had grown up together and shared a strong bond. He was also her godfather.
"Xiaoli, I got a call from your assistant. What's wrong?" He said. He didn't bother with the pleasantries. He had always found them to be useless formalities that no one honestly cared about.
"It can wait for you to get back tomorrow," Evelyn said. She bit her lip. She knew her uncle was rather fond of Shawn.
"Spit it out, girl," he said. Uncle Wai was also not known for his patience. Sighing Evelyn replied.
"I need you to help me with my impending divorce," Evelyn said. Her uncle was quiet. This seemed to be the consistent reaction. Either sympathy, outburst, or stunned silence. She knew her uncle was deciding how best to reply to her. .
"What happened?" he asked at last. Evelyn released the breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
"Shawn said he wants a divorce," she answered.
"Why?" he asked, pressing her for details. Only because she trusted the people in the car did she feel free to tell her uncle then.
"He said he didn't love me anymore. He has a girlfriend, they've been dating for a year." Evelyn said. She leaned her head back and took a deep breath. It wasn't going to be easy to tell this story again and again.
It was like constantly telling people, the man she loved didn't love her. That she wasn't enough, so he found someone else. It was humiliating.
"That bastard," her uncle grumbled. Evelyn knew he was trying to control his anger for her benefit.
"Did he give you the divorce papers?" her uncle asked.
"He did, I kind of tore them up," Evelyn answered sheepishly. She acknowledged that it was a rash move on her part.
"Evelyn," he said. Evelyn could see her uncle shaking his head.
"I have another copy. But what I need is for you to look into the stipulations in the divorce papers." Evelyn said.
"Sure," he replied.
"Uncle Wai," Evelyn said hesitantly.
"What is it?" He answered.
"I haven't told my father or my siblings yet. I want to wait a day before I do." She knew her uncle and her father didn't withhold anything from each other. She bit her lip waiting for her uncle's response.
"I won't tell them. But Evelyn, you should. You know they'll be there for you," he said to her.
"I know. I just need a day. I'll tell them after our meeting tomorrow," she promised.
"Okay, you take careof yourself. I'll see you tomorrow," Uncle Wai said. He wanted to say more to her but he didn't want to nag. He knew his goddaughter was strong, just like her mother. But he knew this couldn't be easy for her.
"Thank you, see you tomorrow." With that Evelyn hung up. When she glanced over she saw Zain grip both hands on the steering wheel. His grip was so tight the whites of his knuckles could be seen.
