I always thought I was at least a strong person, but I had cried so much in the last few days I could no longer believe that. Everything had crumbled what I had known for 18 years. I was dealt one blow after another and now felt… is there even a word for it. What sums up confused, broken, and terrified? My mother was a dragon and what does that make me? Last I knew I was human but now what? I glow and am stuck in a world of shifters and maybe one.
Shaking my head and wiping away what remained of tears on my face I looked at Ayame. "What am I?
Ayame looked into my eyes for a long time. I saw many questions in hers but none she seemed to put to words. Finally, she sighed and shook her head. "Dear I can't tell you that. I don't even know what you saw. You said your mother is from here but you didn't say what she is. On top of that, your female and only 1 of 60 or so can even shift."
"Oh," I realized I had not told her what I saw. I decided to start at the beginning. When I told her my Mom was a dragon the shock was obvious on her face but she waved a hand for me to continue. She looked sad when I told her my mother died giving birth to me. "My Dad always told me she was dead, but like most kids growing up I just imagined she was out there somewhere. It was silly but it makes it hurt more seeing it." Tears threatened to burst again but I was done crying. There had been too many of them. I looked down and asked the question that worried me the most right now. "Am I a dragon?"
Ayame took my hands and said gently."You might be child, but there are two other possibilities." My head shot up to look at her in shock. She said two other possibilities. I thought that she said I could be a dragon or not shift at all? What's with the random third option now? "Do you remember the red-haired man you spoke of?"
I nodded. "What's he got to do with…?" I trailed off realizing what she was getting at. I jumped up almost tripping over the pillow I had been sitting on till now. My legs had fallen asleep without me realizing it. As I stumbled I took a few steps back. "My Dad is a 'HUMAN', not some shifter from here. It's not possible he was at the hospital, he was with Mom, he raised me!" I wanted to reject what she was saying but it made too much sense. My Dad had dark black hair and chocolate eyes which I had neither. Mine was a fiery red much like the man who was twirling my Mom around in the field. The man I call Dad may have raised me in his own way but when I turned 18 he… abandoned me. There was no other way to put it. Did he do that because he knew I was not his? If so, why not tell me? Only one way to find out. "Do you know the man with blue eyes and red hair with black tips?"
Ayame nodded "I know him. His name is Wallace and he is normally out fishing at this hour." She turned to the door and raised her voice. "Orpheus can you come in here please."
Orpheus entered and as soon as he saw me he smiled the toothy grin again. When I first saw it I had found it creepy in the dim firelight but now I found it silly. It reminded me of kids taking their first school photo. I smiled back and slightly waved.
"Do you know where your father went fishing today?"
At Ayame's question Orpheus' head swang towards her. "Yes, but what do you need with him? You know he hates having his fishing interrupted."
"I know but I would like you to take Amber to meet him. I don't think this should wait till tomorrow." She gave me a look that was checking if I was thinking the same, or if she was overstepping.
I stepped toward Orpheus. "Please, I would really like to meet him." I gave him puppy dog eyes. He still seemed hesitant but nodded and turned and walked out. I smiled at Ayame and mouthed 'thank you' and then followed him.
