Jane floated around on her new wings. She had no clue who the spirit was, why it gave her the mask, or for what purpose, but she was going to make sure that the last man the spirit had not killed would die tonight.
She glided, slowly getting used to her wings, towards where the man had fled.
The man was running through the sparse crowd, ignoring the passersby.
Jane fluttered after him, ignorant of the shadow that was following her.
When she was just above him, she dove at him and swung her scythe, impaling him through the chest. His body almost immediately collapsed, blood spurting from the wound in his chest.
She removed her bloodstained scythe, swept her gaze across every person present, and took off, high into the sky.
'Now that I have had revenge, I will make sure that no one will suffer as I did." She thought, determinedly.
Throughout the night, she killed several times. She only killed, though, if she deemed it neccesary.
She was floating above the city once more, when she saw three pitch-black shadows speed out of the city in tight formation.
Flapping her wings, she sought to follow them. She was slow on her wings, but the shadows didn't go very far.
She landed in front of them and bombarded them with questions.
"Who are you? Why did you help me? What are you doing here? What-" She stopped when the middle one raised their hand.
She gazed, shocked, at the hand that had flesh on it.
"We are the shadows." The middle one's scythe glowed purple when it spoke. "And we are the judges in a world without law."
She gazed at them with stars in her eyes. "So we exist to bring justice to those who are deserving of it?" She questioned.
The one on the right spoke. "Yes." Its scythe glowed green when it spoke. "However, not every crime is worthy of a death sentence."
The one on the left then spoke. "Justice is blind." When it spoke its scythe glowed red. "When delivering a punishment, a shadow must remain impartial."
Jane engraved these words onto her heart, vowing to punish those deserving of it and to protect those who needed protecting.
"We will be bringing you companions." The middle one 'spoke' again. "You will make companions, too."
The leftmost one continued the middle one's thoughts. "There can be only one Emperor of Shadow. The Emperor creates Shadows for their leigions and nominates the next Emperor. Choose your successor wisely." It said, its emotionless voice pressed down upon Jane's chest.
The rightmost one continued their edict. "You are to save those in need, deliver justice to those deserving of it, grow your liegion, and select your successor. You are to be the first Empress of Shadows." The weight of their words pressed more firmly against her chest.
She steeled herself and nodded her head. "I won't let you down." She said firmly, scarcely believing herself.
"And one more thing." The middle one said. "Change to your human form when you want to go out during the day, unless you want to be roasted alive."
Nodding her head, not really understanding what they meant.
"Now sleep." The rightmost one said. "You have a big night ahead of you."
