Chapter 28 - A Death in the Family

Shi launched a barrage of sand at the three mages before using what he had learned from the steel wielding mage among the three to launch a giant steel boulder at them. One of the mages used air magic to blow the sand away while the other mage used earth magic to stop the boulder. Hideo stepped forward and launched a barrage of wind blades at Shi.

Shi dodged around the wind blades while summoning both sand and fire magic to his side. He merged the two and launched the superheated sand at Hideo, the sand turning into glass mid-flight. As one of the mages brought up an earth wall, Shi summoned lava and sent it towards the wall in a flood.

The other mage was forced to use a torrent of water to cool down the lava until it solidified, giving Shi enough time to bring down a barrage of icicles at the three mages. The mages were forced to erect an earth wall to defend themselves and Shi used that time to drain some of their mana, refreshing himself.

The steel mage launched a tsunami at Shi, the other mage charging it with lightning. Shi made an earth ramp and put the tsunami in zero gravity. The crackling mass of water flew away, and Shi waited until the water went over the mass of troops before releasing it.

Screams came from the army as men were cooked by the electrically charged water. Hideo stepped forwards and launched a spear of light at Shi. Shi barely even had time to react before the spear was on him, slicing his side and scraping against his ribs and he threw himself to the side.

Shi threw a kunai at each of the men and they all blocked them with a small earth wall. Shi drained the mana from the spear as it kept flying and realized that it was packed with more mana than any spell Shi had ever seen.

The two mages launched another combo attack, a steel claw charged with lightning that slashed down at Shi. Shi covered himself in earth, lowering the gravity on him to maintain mobility and launched himself through the gap between the claw's individual talons.

The lighting died on Shi's earth shield and Shi had his earth shield rocket towards Hideo, who was forced to use wind magic to deflect the earth. Shi launched a giant icicle at the steel mage and launched a steel lance at the lightning mage.

Shi launched a lightning bolt at Hideo and followed his magic attacks with a kunai. He then unslung his bow and shot an arrow at each mage's head and knee. Hideo blocked the lightning bolt with an earth wall that was blown to bits by the sheer force of the lightning bolt.

Hideo barely managed to dodge the kunai, and was able to take the arrows off course with wind magic, but was still grazed by the arrows. One of them taking a chunk out of his ear, and the other slicing his thigh.

The steel mage blocked the ice with a steel barrier, but the barrier was frozen by the ice, so the kunai shattered it. The mage wasn't able to react to the arrows fast enough and was only able to dodge the head arrow, the other arrow slamming into his knee. The mage collapsed to the ground, clutching his leg and screaming in pain.

The lightning mage panicked and instinctually used a barrage of lightning to defend himself. The lightning slowed the steel lance down a little bit, but it also charged the steel with electricity, so when it came in contact with the mage he was paralyzed by the electricity, keeping him stationary as the kunai slammed into his chest and the arrows slammed into his forehead and knee.

Shi quickly threw a kunai into the downed mage's throat, cutting his screams short. Shi absorbed the remaining mana in the two mages corpses, charging himself past what he could normally hold. Hideo launched another light spear at Shi, but Shi had so much mana in him that he knocked it away effortlessly.

Shi kept up the draw on the two corpses, taking all of their mana and leaving them shriveled up. Shi felt the mana running violently through him, threatening to tear his body apart. Shi smiled at the pure joy of the power coursing through him and amped up his war cry with all of the mana at his disposal.

Time seemed to slow down, with Hideo moving at a snail's pace as he tried to run away. Shi moved up to Hideo so fast it was almost like he had teleported, and there was a boom that resounded through the area as Shi broke the sound barrier.

Shi uppercutted Hideo, launching him 50 feet into the air. Shi jumped up there to join him and dropped the gravity to zero for both him and Hideo. Shi pummeled Hideo mid-air, leaving Hideo bruised and bloodied as he passed out in the air.

Shi changed Hideo's gravity to 100x and before Hideo started to fall, Shi flipped forward, adding momentum to a kick that sent Hideo rocketing towards the earth. Shi watched as Hideo slammed into the ground, making a crater so large it reached some of the soldiers that were 5 miles away.

Shi lowered himself to the ground gently and started draining the mana around him. Hideo's body had been smashed to bits so Shi had to absorb the surrounding mana to refresh himself. This absorption wasn't that efficient so Shi sat down to start refueling himself.

Daisan, Hyousuke, and the three mages stood on the ramparts, watching the army approach. They looked up sharply at a loud boom and saw the massive crater behind the army. The massive army came closer and closer to the gates so Hyousuke and the mages went to the gate while Daisan stayed on the ramparts and prepared the crossbowmen. The siege was upon them.
