Chapter 3: Pursuit of Truth

The morning dawned with a sense of urgency that Evelyn couldn't shake. As the first rays of sunlight filtered through the curtains, she rose from her bed with a determination that bordered on desperation. There was no time to waste, no room for hesitation. She had to act, and she had to act now.

With a heavy heart, Evelyn made her way to Harry's room, her footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. She found him still fast asleep, his tousled hair and peaceful expression a stark contrast to the turmoil raging within her own mind. Gently, she brushed a lock of hair from his forehead, her heart clenching at the thought of what lay ahead.

"Good morning, sweetheart," she whispered, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek. "I need you to do something for me today. Can you go stay with Grandma and Grandpa for a little while? Mommy has some things she needs to take care of."

Harry stirred at her touch, his eyes fluttering open with a sleepy smile.

"Sure, Mommy," he said, his voice still thick with sleep. "But why can't I stay here with you?"

Evelyn's heart ached at the innocence in his question, the simple trust he placed in her despite the chaos swirling around them.

"It's just for today, honey," she replied, forcing a smile despite the tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "I promise I'll come and get you soon. Now go get dressed, okay? Grandma and Grandpa are waiting for you."

With a reluctant nod, Harry climbed out of bed and began to dress himself, his movements slow and sluggish with sleep. As Evelyn watched him go, a lump formed in her throat, the weight of her decision pressing down on her like a leaden weight.

But there was no time for second-guessing, no room for doubt. She had made her choice, and now she had to see it through to the end.

With a heavy heart, Evelyn made her way to her own bedroom, her footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. She paused for a moment in front of the mirror, her reflection staring back at her with a mixture of determination and resignation.

Taking a deep breath, she began to dress herself, choosing carefully from the clothes she had worn in her youth. The fabric felt foreign against her skin, a relic of a time long past. But as she looked at herself in the mirror, she couldn't help but feel a flicker of something akin to defiance stir within her chest.

This was who she was, she realized. Not just a wife or a mother, but a woman with dreams and desires of her own. And though those dreams may have been overshadowed by the demands of marriage and motherhood, they were still there, waiting to be rediscovered.

As she finished dressing, Evelyn caught sight of the comb sitting on her dresser, its teeth gleaming in the morning light. Without thinking, she reached out and picked it up, running her fingers along its smooth surface with a sense of longing that bordered on desperation.

She remembered the days when she had spent hours in front of the mirror, painstakingly styling her hair into intricate designs and elaborate braids. It had been her one indulgence, her one escape from the pressures of everyday life.

But now, as she looked at herself in the mirror, she couldn't help but feel a sense of bitterness creep into her heart. What good were such frivolities in the face of the harsh realities of life? What good was beauty when it could be shattered in an instant by the cruel hand of fate?

With a bitter laugh, Evelyn set the comb down on the dresser and made her way to the living room, her resolve hardening with each step. There was work to be done, truths to uncover, and a future to secure for herself and her son.

As she sat down at the kitchen table, her hands trembling with anticipation, Evelyn reached for her phone and dialed the number of the private investigator she had contacted the day before.

"Hello?" came the voice on the other end of the line, crisp and professional.

"Mr. Thompson, it's Evelyn," she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil raging within her. "I need your help. I need you to find proof of my husband's affair with Rose."

---

Meanwhile, as Evelyn waited for the investigator's response, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at her insides. David hadn't come home last night, despite her urgent message. The knot in her stomach tightened with each passing moment, a sense of foreboding settling over her like a heavy shroud.

With a sense of resignation, Evelyn reached for her phone once more, this time dialing the number of her lawyer. She had put off this conversation for too long, but now there was no time to waste. She needed to protect herself and her son, no matter the cost.

"Hello, Ms. Evelyn," came the familiar voice on the other end of the line. "How can I assist you today?"

Taking a deep breath, Evelyn launched into the details of her situation, her voice steady despite the turmoil raging within her.

"I need to update my will," she said, her words coming out in a rush. "I own 50% of the company's shares, as well as some other assets. I need to ensure that Harry and my parents are taken care of, no matter what happens."

The lawyer listened intently, jotting down notes as Evelyn spoke. When she had finished, he nodded thoughtfully, his expression grave.

"I understand, Ms. Evelyn," he said. "I'll make the necessary arrangements and send the updated documents to you as soon as possible."

With a grateful nod, Evelyn thanked the lawyer and hung up the phone, a sense of relief flooding through her veins. It was a small comfort, knowing that she had taken steps to protect her son's future, but it was a comfort nonetheless.

As she sat alone in the empty house, waiting for news from the investigator, Evelyn couldn't help but feel a sense of unease settle over her like a heavy blanket. The truth was out there, waiting to be uncovered, but she knew that once it was revealed, there would be no turning back.

But whatever the future held, Evelyn was determined to face it head-on, with courage and conviction in her heart. For she knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, she would always find the strength to persevere, for the sake of her son and the life they had built together.
