Chapter 5: Unraveling the Deception

The atmosphere in David's office was thick with tension as Evelyn took a seat opposite him. The air seemed to crackle with unspoken words, and both knew that this meeting would alter the course of their lives forever.

David's eyes bore into Evelyn's with a mixture of defiance and apprehension, while Evelyn's gaze remained steady, betraying no hint of the turmoil raging within her. It was time for the truth to come to light, for secrets to be laid bare.

Finally, breaking the silence that hung heavily between them, David spoke, his voice sharp and defensive. "What are you doing here, Evelyn?"

Evelyn took a deep breath, steeling herself for the confrontation she knew was inevitable. "I'm here to talk about us, David. About the truth."

David's facade faltered for a moment, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his features before he quickly masked it with a facade of indifference. "I don't know what you're talking about," he retorted, his tone dismissive. "But whatever it is, it can wait. I have more important things to deal with right now."

But Evelyn refused to be deterred. She had come too far to let David brush aside the gravity of the situation. "No, David, it can't wait," she insisted, her voice steady despite the storm raging within her. "Not anymore. I know about you and Rose. I know about the affair."

For a moment, the room seemed to spin as Evelyn's words hung in the air, the weight of their implications settling heavily between them. David's mask slipped, his expression shifting from defiance to shock, then quickly to denial.

"How... how did you find out?" he stammered, his voice barely more than a whisper.

Evelyn met his gaze with unwavering resolve. "You wanted to know how I knew about your affair? You remember I called you back a few days ago. Someone sent me photos of your bed romance."

David's face paled, the color draining from his cheeks as the reality of his betrayal stared him in the face. For a moment, he seemed lost for words, his mind racing as he struggled to come to terms with the consequences of his actions.

"I'm sorry, Evelyn," he finally managed to choke out, his voice heavy with remorse. "I never meant to hurt you. It was a mistake, a moment of weakness. Please, you have to believe me."

But Evelyn was done with believing his empty promises, done with allowing herself to be deceived by his lies. "No, David," she said, her voice firm with resolve. "I don't believe you. Not anymore. You made a choice, and now you have to live with the consequences."

David's eyes widened in shock at her words, a flicker of fear flashing across his face. "What... what are you going to do?" he asked, his voice trembling with uncertainty.

Evelyn took a deep breath, her resolve hardening with each passing moment. "I'm leaving you, David," she said, her voice steady despite the pain that threatened to consume her. "I'm taking Harry, and I'm filing for divorce. I won't let you destroy our lives any longer."

For a moment, there was silence as David processed her words, his face a mask of disbelief and denial. But then, as the reality of the situation sank in, his expression softened, his shoulders slumping with defeat.

"I understand," he said, his voice barely more than a whisper. "I'll... I'll make arrangements for you to have full custody of Harry. And I'll... I'll give you whatever you want in the divorce settlement. Just... just please, don't take him away from me completely."

But Evelyn was unmoved by his pleas, her heart hardened against his empty words. "It's too late for that, David," she said, her voice firm with finality. "You made your choice, and now you have to live with the consequences. Goodbye."

Just as Evelyn was about to reach the door, she paused, a thought crossing her mind. She turned back to face David, her expression resolute.

"I'll agree to full custody of Harry," she said, her voice firm. "But on one condition. Rose must undergo a procedure to ensure she can never bear your child in the future. And at the same time, for the next six months from the time we file for divorce, you will follow what I say or else..."

David's eyes widened in shock at her conditions, but he knew he had no choice but to agree. With a heavy heart, he nodded in acceptance, his spirit broken by the consequences of his actions.

Seeing him nod, Evelyn looked at him with complicated and some kind of emotions.

"At the same time, I should warn you to investigate somethings about what happened between you and Rose..."

And with that, Evelyn turned on her heel and walked out of David's office, leaving behind the shattered remains of their marriage and the painful memories of a love lost. But as she stepped out into the world beyond, she felt a sense of liberation wash over her, a newfound freedom to chart her own path and build a future untethered by the chains of deceit and betrayal.
