"AAHHHHHH" Kai stood cracking her knuckles, they'd tried looting the wrong place. The boys quickly stood up terrified. Seeing the moonlight hit their masked faces, Kai had seen them before trying to break into an elderly woman's home down the street. Truly, humanity was at it's lowest.
"You said she was out!"
"Fuck! Quickly shut her up!" They all seemed to storm her all at once. Hah, what sloppy movement. Like a bull in a china shop. Kai sighed and dodged their first lunge grabbing one by the collar and slamming his head against the trash can. Sh*t that was loud, Colin would be down any minute. Another tried to punch her from behind so she swung around kicking the side of his head. What a rush, her whole body was buzzing with exhilaration. Both of the boys coughed being winded from her force. It wasn't that Kai was strong, it was because she'd learned how to direct people's strength in order to use it against them.
"Your a real pain in the ass you know that." The last one standing faced off with her, it was never good to attack first so she put her hands in her pockets and leaned against the wall. Here came the same old speech about her being a total oddity in this town. Just a broken record she thought.
Kai, "Says the one looting from the vulnerable, your scum you know that." He began chuckling over the top. What was he a supervillain? This was boring waiting for him to do something, soon the other guys would gain composure and the fight would start all over again. Kai was a little worn out from her work out so taking all three would be tough. Stamina was wearing with little food.
"I'm scum? Aren't you the vicious neighborhood dog people dare make eye contact with. You act all tough but you sure quiet down after your friend left. I've been watching you for a wall, you need knocking down a peg you b*tch." Kai smirked, that was a new one and it pissed her off it was getting to her. Keep your head above it all, it's tough when you're not here Bobby. Who exactly am I fighting for?
Kai, "I'm bored, are you going to go quietly or not? All I have to do is call the soldiers and your finished. You'll be put in isolation for three weeks, you and your little bum chums over here." Yet again her laughed, she couldn't see his face but surely he was pretty happy with himself. That's enough this is going nowhere. Kai pushed off from the wall before walking towards him.
"I wouldn't." A loud click caused her head to raise, then like the energy left her body she was face to face with the end barrel of a pistol. Kai was tough, but winning against a gun? There was no way.
"Cool right? I sneaked a few things from the incoming military stock. Thought it would come in handy." Kai was trembling trying to hold her nerve, he was just a naive kid. One wrong move and she'd be a goner.
Kai, "Little boys shouldn't play with big toys. So, you gonna shoot me or what I don't have all night." His body language changed. This guy was irked for sure, dammit why couldn't she just have kept her mouth shut. Little by little his finger was getting a bit too trigger happy.
"Oh yeah, well little pretty kittens like you shouldn't act so proud. You think you're a hero huh!" Kai felt a harsh force against her head and just like that her knees buckled. Clutching her head disorientated she looked up to see that barrel still clear as day. Had she been shot, no she wouldn't be alive? Did this guy just pistol-whip her, was he serious? Kai felt her anger flare up and lunged at his legs jabbing the Achilles tendons, and like a sack of potatoes, he dropped down. Straddling him with her knees pinched so he would buck her off they wrestled for the gun in his sweating hands.
"Oi wake up you assholes!" He called out for help, why was this chick so strong. This wasn't supposed to happen! Kai was running out of energy, how the hell did it turn out like this?
Kai, "Give it up before I really give you something to cry out for." Her clenched teeth and vicious tone startled him giving that add of adrenaline. With his knee just under her thigh, he forced it uplifting her forward and with one quick crunch, he launched her overhead. Kai hissed feeling her shoulder graze against the pavement, her vision was starting to go red as the blood dripped from her forehead.
*Clock* She froze and slowly looked up, this time he wasn't playing around. She'd f*cked up big time. Was this really it, everything she'd done. Overcome, learned was going to end in HIS hands? No, she still needed to find Bobby. Her life was far from done. As he reached for the trigger Kai instinctively curled up sweat hailing from her arms and legs. This is what it felt like to be faced with death. It was cold, terrifying and lonely. Sounds had disappeared almost like she was in a void to escape from reality.
Kai, "No way." she whispered. Bobby...she still needed to find him. Why couldn't she move, what the hell was this numbing sensation in her head? Kai looked up teary-eyed begging for mercy, that calm attitude disappeared. This guy was exhilarated, even through that latex mask she could see his wicked smile.
"Nighty Night...UGH!" Kai flinched covering her head...Seconds went by, she felt a heavy heave in her chest. She was...still breathing. Stunned she felt her body, no pain, no blood. Still afraid to glance up in-case this asshole was toying with her. Eh? Why was he by her feet unconscious?
"You should get inside." A low crisp voice called out to her. Kai quickly jumped to her feet and looked behind the guy who'd just tried to kill her to find. A heavily hooded guy covered head to toe in black, even his hands were gloved, not a slither of skin showed.
Kai, "Why...Who are you?" Dammit her voice was still trembling. She waited in the darkness for a reply but he was silent, not even looking her way. Instead, he hastily walked past her disappearing down the alley.
Kai, "H-Hey! You can't just save me and walk away. Wait for a second!"
Colin, "KAI!" Her trembling legs halted hearing Colin behind her. This was too much, what the hell was going on? That long arm outstretched towards the stranger who'd saved her but he was long gone. Colin dodged the misfits quickly grabbing Kai before she could runoff. This was bad she was shaking like a leaf.
"Doctor, is everything alright?" Soldiers came to investigate the commotion only to find three unconscious boys and a clearly disturbed young girl. It was easy to guess what had happened here but this involved Kai...
"It's that damn brat again, there's always trouble when you're around." Kai was still in a daze but when she heard those words something inside her snapped. Colin grabbed her wrist as she spun around ready to lunge at them.
Colin, "Kai that's enough!"
Kai, "Considering I'm doing your f*cking job how about you have a little more gratitude!" The soldiers gritted their teeth and twitched for there guns. Ever since she could walk this kid had caused nothing but trouble.
"We expected you to tame the animal in Bobby's absence Doctor Strass." Colin hated Kai being spoken of like that just as much as she but these men weren't ones to argue with. Kai groaned slightly feeling her vision become dizzy. Dammit, she didn't have time for this, she needed to find the black stranger who'd saved her. As a few workers began arresting the three misfits Kai pried Colin's hand off and began walking in his direction.
Colin, "What are you thinking, your hurt Kai!" She hissed and pushed him away. That didn't matter, this painful yearning was killing her. Like an electric pull from her heart, it was agonizing. It was...the same feeling she got for Bobby. Colin didn't want to do this but she was giving him no choice.
Kai, "Ngh!" A sharp scratch in her arm stopped those eager footsteps. Colin closed his eyes and backed up, she'd never forgive him for this. Stunned Kai pulled out a needle with shaking hands. Did this asshole really...just sedate her!
Kai, "C-Colin? Hah! You bastard, why would y--" Quickly her words slurred and like a weight on her eyelids, everything faded away to black. Colin caught her before she hit the cold ground. Boy, would he get the life kicked out of him when she woke up? As he scooped up her unconscious body one the boy who had held the gun woke up suddenly to find himself in handcuffs and his words were terrifying.
"HAHAHA! Did I kill her? They'll be so happy with me!" Colin gave him an angry disgusted glare, they came to kill her... This world was getting out of hand.
Colin, "Who are you implying? Why are you after Kai!" He snickered, one of the soldiers immediately took off his mask revealing two glowing grey eyes. They all gasped and jumped back. This was a 'Core Holder'!
"So she still breathing, what a shame...Huh? That girls's a primary target, don't act all innocent Doctor." Colin felt his heart drop, there had been a breach yet they didn't know about it. It was too dangerous.
Colin, "Lock him in solitary and don't let anyone go near him he'll absorb anyone's energy he can get. Hurry." They all nodded and began dragging him away. Frightened his eyes were fixated on Kai like he was obsessed. Like instinct, Colin shielded her from those prying eyes.
"She's sixteen soon, you know what that means Doctor! You don't have much time!" Colin welled up, he didn't need a reminder. As they were left alone in the freezing silent alley he looked at that peaceful face breathing calmly in his arms.
Colin, "Why did you have to grow up..." He whispered sadly under his breath.
---------------------2 Days Later--------------------------------
Colin had his hand on her wrist, thankfully her pulse was still steady. It was stupid of him to knock her out when she'd possibly have a concussion. That nasty gash on her forehead would leave a scar. He'd applied bandages to her elbows are knees, she must have fought hard to have such grazed wounds. A small kind smile appeared on his face, she looked so angelic asleep. It was ironic he thought, knowing the minute Kai woke up all hell would run loose. The bell at the door attracted his attention. Leon had been coming every day since hearing about her incident, Kai was like a big sister to him.
Colin, "Morning Leon, are you feeling alright?" Leon sighed sadly seeing his idol hadn't woke up yet. Colin could feel his pain, it was so quiet around here without her.
Leon, "I'm okay. Kai hasn't woken up yet, will she wake up?" He sounded so panicked as if his world was crashing down at the thought. Colin felt a little guilty hiding the fact Kai was asleep because of him.
Colin, "Of course she will her body is just healing right now. Sit down I'll give you a quick consultation." Leon groaned, he hated this. Sticking him with sticks and prodding him with thermometers, it wasn't as bad when Kai did it but Colin was too thorough.
Colin, "I don't bite." He joked, Leon saw a chance to get back at him.
Leon, "Kai said you do. You're snappy like a pomeranian." Colin gave him a sly grin, Kai had rubbed off on this kid. A pomeranian? Of all the dogs it had to be the yappy annoying one. Leon giggled and sat down. Colin took his temperature which was fine then tapped his knees to check his motor reactions. Leon winced as he pinched his arm to check he wasn't dehydrated, usually, the skin would lose its color and become saggy but since Leon was a high-risk patient he received plenty of rations and even when he didn't Kai would always give him hers.
Colin, "Good, your perfectly healthy right now. I remember when you were sickly back in the day..." That was always a tough sight to remember, Leon's mother used to sit and cry over his bed everyday in-case he didn't make it through the night.
Leon, "Me too but Kai always cheered me up by picking on you." Colin chuckled. That she did. Both of them glanced at her in sync. Those soldiers scrutinized her because they hadn't seen the other side. Most described her like a rabid dog, that roamed the streets looking for who to bite but...Kai was caring, understanding and didn't judge people based on their past.
Colin, "I'm sure she'd be happy to hear that. Your mother might be worrying so head back for now. Kai should be awake by tomorrow so you can see her." Leon smiled hesitantly, it looked like he didn't want to leave her but watching her all day would only make him worry more.
Leon, "Thanks Doctor Strass, I'll see you tomorrow." His little hand waved before running off, what it was like to be young again. Colin pulled up his chair to Kai's bed and quickly checked her vitals again, his anxiety was weighing. Normally patients under anesthesia would be awake by now. However, he'd spoke too soon. Colin stroked her hair when a hand lunged out grabbing his tie. Surprised he gasped and backed off. Kai opened her eyes wearily and sat up in a panic.
Kai, "Ugh, what the hell happened?" Her mind was foggy and throbbing, everything in the doctor's office spun like a washing machine. Then as her eyes adjusted bit by bit that night came back to her. The three men, that gun pointed at her face, the...man in black who saved her and-- Suddenly furious she looked at Colin. Not knowing what to say he gulped and put his hands up in surrender.
Kai," You sly sneaky bastard, how could you sedate me!" She ripped the IV from her arm and threw the needle at him. She hadn't even resisted that night, or tried to hurt the soldiers so why did he do that to her?
Colin, "Look I'm sorry but you were going to do something reckless so I did what I had too." 'What he had too?' Kai sneered at him as if she was dumb enough to fall for that.
Kai, "So, knowing I would do something bad you purposely got your needle loaded it with a sedative, THEN came to help me. I almost f*cking died Colin, you really have no faith in me do you!" Colin froze, it amazed him she deducted that much. There was no way he could walk out of this one...
Colin, "I have faith in you, just not when it comes to conflict. If I hadn't of done that you would have attacked the soldiers and earned yourself isolation time. I don't want them to lock you away Kai." Hah, what a load of sh*t, Colin was trying to cover his back for some reason. Kai rolled her eyes, this was useless arguing with him, he was like a kid always needing to have the last word.
Kai, "Your right, I would have attacked them. It's always trouble when I'm involved? Don't f*ck with me, the only reason people aren't dying is that I choose to protect the people they can't even be bothered to show a smile too." Colin couldn't believe how dejected she sounded, maybe their words had gotten to her. Slowly she gained her bearings and stood up brushing off the bandages.
Colin, "What are you doing, your still hurt." Kai ignored him and looked around for her coat, she needed to do something or her mind couldn't rest. That man, that scent, that pull. What did it mean? Who was he?
Kai, "I need to find someone, don't get in my way." Colin clenched his fists, why couldn't she just care about herself for once. As she put on her sneakers he grabbed her shoulder.
Colin, "Who are you looking for?" Kai didn't know the answer, she didn't know his skin color, face or name. All she knew was it was painful...not knowing who saved her. It was frustrating that this was the first time 'she' had been the damsel in distress.
Kai, "When I thought everything was about to be over, someone saved me. A guy in all black, even his face. I need to find him before he disappears, I owe him and I don't like owing favors you know that." Hmm...that was strange he'd let go and stopped talking. Usually, by now he'd be nagging or begging her to stay home for rest but Colin hadn't made a peep. As she turned around curiously she saw beads of sweat running down his face, his complexion pure white. Like he'd seen a ghost.
Kai, "Colin?"
