Chereads / Safe Haven's Defender / Chapter 9 - Adjustments

Chapter 9 - Adjustments

Everyone seemed to collapse a little at my words. I guess that it made sense in a way. They had been violated and hadn't had anywhere they could consider safe to rest their heads in who knows how long. They might not completely trust me yet, but I could clearly see the hope that had taken root in their hearts. I would do my best not to betray that hope.

"Now, I believe that it is time that we get everyone properly settled in," I said, suddenly standing up.

Everyone else stood up as well, though they appeared somewhat confused at my words. Chuckling softly to myself, I cast a spell to move us all to the lakeside.

"{Mass Teleport}"

Instantly, we all appeared before the surprise boys that had remained behind. Some of them moved to defend the others, but Bron and his group quickly moved to calm them down.

"Hold on, we talked with him and he agreed to shelter us here for the time being," Bron called out, extending his hands towards everyone.

"Yeah? And how do we know that he won't use us as well?" one yelled back angrily.

"You all know and trust the accuracy of Tyler's 'sight', and he said that we could trust . . ." Bron tried to explain, but suddenly he stopped and looked at me while a flash of indecision crossed his eyes.

"Orin. I am called Orin," I explained, immediately realizing my mistake. "I apologize for my abrupt actions the other day and would like to welcome you to my home."

"May I ask a question?" said the boy that had been caring for the sick and injured before.

"Sure, but may I ask your name?" I answered with an easy grin.

"Oh, I am Sinard," he said, bobbing his head. "Do you know why the greenery here is growing so quickly."

"That might be a hard question to answered," I said slowly. "Simply put, the is something here that releases a massive amount of magic power constantly. Now, moving forward, I think that things would be a bit more comfortable if you were to move inside the mountain, but I could be wrong."

"What is in that mountain anyway?" Tyler asked curiosity burning in his eyes.

"Uh, to be honest, I created it to serve as a place to live, but it got away from me a bit," I admitted sheepishly.

"You created it!?" Bron cried in shock.

"Um, yes?" I questioned. Had I done something wrong. I am sure that moving earth on this scale wasn't common, but surely it wasn't impossible.

"No, nothing," he said shaking his head in a way that made me think he was admitting defeat about something.

"Okay. So there are a number of rooms of varying sizes within the mountain. Truthfully, there aren't any furnishings, but hopefully we should be able to make something if we can get the needed materials," I explained, gesturing towards the mountain.

"Actually, would there be any problem with us remaining here?" Bron asked suddenly. "Some of us aren't really . . ."

"Oh, I understand," I responded immediately. "There won't be any problems at all."

I instantly felt a bit guilty and idiotic. They had only recently escaped captivity that had lasted for an unknown length of time. They probably didn't like the idea of an enclose space that much.

I inquired whether anyone knew anything about working with wood or cloth and a few actually raised their hands. Informing them that I would go look for some materials, I used 'teleport' to return to the edge of the wastes.

"Kay, now I should probably sell the Mamotrite corpse and use the funds to pay for what we need," I said rising into the air and vanishing from sight.

Moving rapidly, I managed to find the nearest city in short order. There was a small line of people waiting to enter, so I went a ways up the road and walked back like a normal person. Nobody needed to see me flying through the air after all. The line was moving quickly, so I was soon in front of a few soldiers guarding the gate to the city. They were both human and distinctly taller than me.

"It will be three small silvers to enter the city," one of them said after glancing at me.

"Um," I hesitated. I didn't actually have any money. While I thought, I stuck my hand in one of the robes pockets on instinct, and found a number of coins in there. Yolmin had prepared things for me and I hadn't even noticed. Actually this robe was kind of odd. I would have to examine it closer later.

"Kay," the guard said in a bored tone after accepting the coins. "You may enter."

"Thank you," I said sincerely. "Do you know somewhere that I could sell a monster corpse."

"Keep going down the main street," he said pointing behind himself. "It will be the guild hall for the defenders."

Following his directions, I soon arrived in front of a large building with a sign of a sword and shield in front. I guess that this world didn't have the adventurer's guild that I had dreamed of in my previous life. Walking inside though, it looked awfully similar. There were a number of counters with receptionists, including one specifically for monster materials. However, the board of requests only had requests to subjugate various monsters or defend a merchant caravan. Maybe that is why the name was the defender's guild instead. I headed directly to counter for materials and began talking to the receptionist.

"Excuse me, can I sell some materials here?" I asked politely.

"Sure, what have you got?" he responded in a tired tone.

"Actually, it is a rather big monster, do you have somewhere bigger to take it out?" I asked nervously. The Mamotrite was an enormous monster after all.

"Look kid, show me monster or beat it. I haven't got all day," he said contemputously.

I felt irritation course through me at his words. I hadn't ever really been treated well in my previous world and I didn't have high expectations here either, but being talked down to was really one of my pet peeves. Especially when I was trying to be considerate.

"Fine," I said in a strained voice.

"{Open Storage}"

A black hole appeared in front of me and I grabbed a hold of one of the monsters spikes and began to slowly draw is out of the storage space. The magic had prevented it from deteriorating any further.

As the monster slowly came into view, I watched happily as the receptionists face went slack and his eyes grew. By the time I had reached its shoulders, he had finally realized his mistake.

"Wait, hold on," he cried desperately. "We will prepare a place in the warehouse immediately."
