I easily returned the monster corpse to my storage and waited patiently as they worked. It might be bad of me, but I was quite enjoying watching them scramble. A number of men had been looking on contemptuously from the request board, but they appeared to still be recovering from the shock of watching a slight boy pull of giant monster's head from space.
"Please come this way sir," one of workers said, bowing his head and signaled towards a side door.
They promptly led me to a wide open room with a couple of wooden boxes stack around the edges. There should be enough room here. As soon as they were clear, I dumped the monster's corpse in the middle of the room in a single motion.
One of the workers appeared to have an 'appraisal' skill, but as soon as he was done examining it, he fell down backward shacking like a leaf in the wind.
"What is it?" one of them asked him impatiently.
"I-i-it's a-a-a Ma-ma-mamotrite," he managed to stutter.
Instantly, the guild workers flew into a frenzy. From what I could gather, they knew what a Mamotrite was, but there had never been one brought to a human city to sell it. Apparently only the dragons would occasionally sell one to dwarven workers. Someone rushed out, and returned before long with a large man that looked like he should be wielding an ax instead of a pen.
"Where is the Mamotrite?" he demanded as soon as entered. As soon as he saw it, one of the workers pointed to me and then he was bombarding me with questions. "Who are you? Where did you get that monster? Did someone sell it to you?"
"My name is Orin," I answered a bit reluctantly. I honestly didn't want to talk with these people anymore. "I got it from the wastes. Where else would you find a Mamotrite?"
"You must have found it already dead or something," he muttered quietly, but I could still hear him. Jeez, was everyone in this city so rude.
"Sure, sure. Believe whatever you want," I said dismissively. "Now, are you going to buy it or not?"
"Hmm," he stopped and pondered the monster for a minute. "We can give you 700 large gold coins for it."
I was shocked by the shear amount of wealth that had just been offered for this monster corpse. In this world, there were copper, silver, and gold coins, each of which had a small, medium, and large version. Each coin was worth ten of the previous. I think that the most that I had noticed someone spending as I had walked through the streets was a large silver coin, but most things seemed to be in copper or small silver coins.
Shaking off my stupor, I accepted the money and proceeded to quickly leave the building, but first I asked about where I could get the materials that I needed. No one stopped me from leaving, probably because they were so focused on the corpse.
I carefully placed most of the coins in storage, while leaving a few in my pocket for emergencies. As I wandered through the crowd, I began to notice someone with ill intent following me. I couldn't quite catch sight of them, so I walked a bit quicker and arrived at the merchant store that the guild workers had told me about.
People bustled in and out through the large double doors. Inside, a large open room had various shelves set up to display hundreds of goods. Dozens of employees were attending to the constant flow of customers. As impressive as the largest merchant company in town should be.
"Pardon me," I said, flagging down on of the attendants.
"Yes? How may I help you?" she answered courteously.
"I would like to purchase sufficient supplies for thirty people for about three months," I said, attempting to explain what I wanted.
The female attendant seemed to freeze for a minute before regaining her composure.
"Please come with me, sir. We will have a representative discuss the specifics in another room," she finally said, leading me to the second floor.
The room where she left me was a comfortable receptionist type room with a pair of soft sofas and a delicately carved wooden table. The furnishings seemed so expensive to me that I wondered who they would normally receive here.
"Excuse me, I am Jake, a representative of the Namis Company," a twig of a man said as he entered the room.
"Nice to meet you," I said standing up and extending my hand. "I am Orin."
"I understand that you would like to make a rather large purchase," Jake commented as he shook my hand and sat down.
"Yes, I would like sufficient clothes, food, and general supplies for thirty people for three months. Additional, I would like to purchase some large quantities of leather, cloth, thread, and tools," I slowly listed everything that I could think of off the top of my head. I honestly hadn't planned on buying this much, but expenses shouldn't be a problem for a while.
"Hmm, we could certainly gather these things, but we will require a day to transport everything here. Is that acceptable?"
"That's fine. If you could point me to a decent inn, then I will come back tomorrow."
I hadn't originally planned on staying the night, but the Mamotrite sold for much more than anticipated. And I wanted to see what accommodations they had in this world.
Following Jake's directions, I easily found the Golden Dragon inn. It was a one of the bigger buildings in town and everything was carved of either a solid, red wood or a type of black marble. Someone came to receive me the minute I entered the gates.
"Greetings, young master. Would you like to stay the night?" A kind looking woman asked politely.
"Yes I would," I answered evenly. "How much would it be for a single night with a meal included?"
"A single night would be one gold, while the meal will be two silvers."
"Okay. Please have it delivered to me room."
Almost as soon as I had handed over the coins, a well-dressed young man took me to a room on the second floor. The room was decked in silks and other soft fabrics that I couldn't identify. There was a queen-sized bed with drapes and a number of soft couches and tables. It looked like I could receive guests here. It left me with a clear view of just how much my hideaway was lacking.
'Oh, I still need to check out this rob,' I thought as I sat down.
