Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Trouble in Tallahassee

The jet ride itself was slow. For the entire flight all I could think about or focus on was Angela. More specifically, what she could be going through. I shuddered at the thoughts as the plane made a gentle touchdown in Tallahassee International Airport. Without saying a word, I left the plane and got into the 2019 Lancia Stratos that waited for me, Gio close behind. I stop and turn to Gio before getting in the car. "Gio, take that G-Wagon over there and set up an operations base. I'll be back soon." I turn back around, get in the car, and pull away. After a short, silent drive through Tallahssee, I pull the car into the parking lot of an official looking government building and walk inside. At the reception counter, a small otter looks over the desk at me. "ID please." I take off the aviator sunglasses and flash my ID. "Long time since you were here last. Good to see you again Senna." "Good to see you too Herb." I say as I put my glasses back on, stow my ID, and stroll through the glass doors into the Tallahassee office. I march to the rear briefing room to see Chief of Police Richard Taft. Walking in I shake his hand and introduce myself. "Mr. Taft I presume? Name's Senna. Richard Senna." "Pleased Mr. Senna. I got the details from Moore. A search team has been dispatched to your address. I suggest we follow them." I nod in agreement. He takes me around back and unlocks one of the squad cars before I stop him. "Let's take mine." I escort him around to the front of the building and gesture to the passenger side of my Stratos. Getting in I set the GPS system and pulled out into the road. About a half of an hour later, I park the car outside of the listed address among the other squad cars and get out, walking into the house alongside Taft. Upon entering, we are confronted by a younger looking labrador. "Good, you're here sir. We found something you may want to look at." He gives us both a concerned glance before turning back into the house, with both Taft and I on his heels. We wind through some hallways before entering the master bedroom of the house. Inside are multiple officers, all looking at the king size bed in the middle of the room. The stench of rotting meat hits me like a brick as soon as I step through the doorway. Both the young officer and Taft have stopped, and Taft gestures at me toward the bed. I gingerly inch closer, the full scope of the situation presents itself. On the bed are several severed fingers and toes, each covered with matted purple fur in a pool of blood. Next to it, a bloody message written on the sheets. It reads, "My patience isn't limitless… unlike my authority." "What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" I turn to Taft. "Run the blood and the appendages. I want to make sure they're only decoys and not off of my wife." "Got it." He issues some orders to his men. "God dammit, where iS HE!" I slam my fist on the nightstand. "Why did I have to disengage those trackers? Wait. Trackers. Tracking. TAFT!" "Yes, Mr. Senna?" "We're going back to the station right now. I want to look at the security cameras." "You're the boss, Mr. Senna." We get back in the car. On the way, Taft gets a call. "The lab results are back. The fur and some blood are Angela's, but the limbs are not. They along with the remaining blood belong to a man who died of a heart attack 3 weeks ago." "Hmmm, I'll look into that deeper. Right now I want to check all surveillance of the activity in and around that house." We park at the station and exit the car. Taft escorts me to a surveillance room with hundreds of screens, each displaying a live feed of the city. Taft pulls up a screen that shows a feed of the house we had just left. He presses a few buttons on a keyboard and the video rewinds. "Stop." The video stops to show a normal looking man walking into his house. Button up shirt, dress slacks, nice shoes. Taft speaks up "Looks like just some random guy." "Don't be fooled. Zoom in." Taft zooms the camera, revealing the man entering the house is a snow leopard. "I know he's toying with me. He's too careful to just appear on a camera like this, but this may at least help us get to him." "How so?" "Easy, track his car. Follow it and see where he goes." Taft resumes the video and we switch cameras, following the silver Toyota Corolla hatchback. We watch it as it swings into a parking garage. "Cameras are dead in here." "Tap into a nearby building and use those to zoom in. We'll watch him from the outside in." "Not a bad idea, fox." "Don't call me that." "Yes, Mr. Senna." We watch the footage carefully, keeping tabs on his every move. "Wait, look there. He's getting into the elevator." "Well, how do we follow him now?" "Elevator camera." I take the controls and keyboard and tap into the elevator camera, watching the man step inside and close the doors. Once closed, he opens the button panel cover and messes with a few wires. The elevator whirrs to life and starts to fall, going past the ground floor. In total, the elevator keeps going for around 7 min before it stops at its destination. The doors open and the man steps out. The doors close and the elevator goes back to the ground floor. "Pull up the camera feeds from the surrounding alleyways." Taft takes the keyboard back and starts typing. Several camera feeds pull up, each looking into a different alleyway. The feeds begin playing. "Stop. Look at camera 7." The paused feed shows a van popping out of the ground on a hidden vehicle elevator. "When is this feed dated?" "Ummmm, date reads 2 days ago." "Then we have our guy. I need to make a call. Thank you for your help Mr. Taft." "Anytime. Good luck finding your guy." I give him a nod of acknowledgement and exit the room. I get back into the Stratos and pull up the hands free as I exit the parking lot. "Hello?" "Hey mom, I got a job for you." "Oh. What do you need?" "First, put you and Dad on speakerphone, you both need to hear this." The voice of Maddox tunes in. "Already on speaker buddy." "Great, now listen very closely. In the bunker is a large cargo jet. It's all black and a semi truck is in the cargo hold. In the cockpit is a large, red switch labeled AUTOZONING. Flip it. The plane will pilot itself to the airport closest to my location. Before you leave, grab all your weapons and armor, you will want it. Dad, no Suburban. Got all that?" "Yes." They say in unison. "Good. I'll see you in an hour." "Hold on. How will we get from Colorado to Florida in an hour?" "Because that cargo plane is capable of Mach 3, so hold onto your underpants when it takes off." I hang up before they can ask any more questions. "Ok, once I have that command center here I'll feel much better. Everything is going to be fine Richard, everything is going to be fine. You are the greatest detective ever. You caught this guy once before and you can get him again. Hoooooo. I hope no one can see me talking to myself. They might think I'm crazy." I pull the car onto a large private runway in the middle of the swamp. I park the car next to the runway and wait for the plane to land.
