Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Not Your Average Parking Garage

I start to nod off when I hear the sound of a jetliner in the distance. As the source of the sound draws closer, I can see the black jet descending from above the clouds and preparing to land. Once it lands, I walk over to the door and open in to greet my parents. "Shit kid you weren't kidding about that takeoff." "Yea, she's pretty quick. But right now we need to get moving." I pull the switch to release the back ramp and pull the semi truck onto the runway. Joeliene speaks up. "If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is that thing?" "It's a mobile command center. In the trailer is space for a small getaway car, Computers, hacking software, weapons and armor storage, and a small bedroom for longer missions. It functions like the computers back home, except on a truck. Oh, it's also got these." I push a button on a remote and six guns pop out of the sides of the trailer. Maddox whistles. "Told ya you didn't need the Suburban." "Alright, point taken. Now what's the plan?" "We're breaking into an elevator." "What?" "Just follow me." I pull the Stratos into the truck and store the plane in a nearby hangar. "Ok. There's a parking garage in Tallahassee. The elevator inside is the door to a secret base. If it belongs to Jeron or not I don't know, but it's certainly a good lead." "Gotcha kid." After a short drive into the city, I park the truck just outside the garage. "Mum, stay here and monitor us and the truck. Dad, you're coming with me. Get your armor and a SMALL gun. I repeat, SMALL." "Alright, alright I heard ya the first time." He suits up alongside me. "Oh, take this as well." I toss him a small metal button. "A button?" "It's a cloaking device. Stick it to the outside of your armor. Once we're inside, press the center button to scan one of the goons and that device will apply a computerized disguise that perfectly mimics the person. Even has a voice modulator." "Wow." He turns the device over in his hands a few times before sticking it onto his front chestplate. I stick one onto myself as well. I look over at my father. "Ready?" He nods and the both of us exit the truck. I turn my comms on. "Mom, can you hear me? Test 1, 2, 3, test." "Loud and clear Double-O Cutie." "Appreciated, but not the time mom." I hear Maddox chuckle off to my left. "Let's just get going please." Together, we walk into the parking garage and across to the elevator in the far left corner of the building. We enter the unassuming car and allow the doors to close. "Alright mom, I need the button code for the door." "Uhh, ah, here it is. 1, 4, Close Door, 3, 3, Open Door, Close Door, 1. Got that?" I press the buttons in the order given to me. "Yea. Got it" As I press the last button, the elevator gives a lurch and plummets downward. After about a minute of falling, the car slows down and eventually comes to a halt. In front of us, the doors open with a pleasant ding. Beyond the doors is a large storage hall, filled with metal crates and containers. I look over to Maddox. "Follow me and keep your head on a swivel. If we come across anyone, silently incapacitate them and use the cloaking device to disguise yourself. Only use your gun as a last resort." "Got it. Lead on sarge." I warily exit the elevator with Maddox close behind me. "Mom, I need you to keep and eye out for us. Warn us of any oncoming goons." "All clear so far." We continue forward and around the first stack of containers when I hear Joeliene on the radio. "You have a guy just around the next left." I peak around the corner and see a large timber wolf pacing down one of the container rows. I face Maddox. "Watch my back, I'm going in to take this guy down." "Are you sure? He looks pretty big." "Just watch and learn old timer." I wait till the wolf has his back turned before I quickly sneak up behind him, grab his muzzle, and knock him out in one swift motion. I snap his neck to kill him and drag the body into the container stack to hide it. I apply the cloaking and jog back to Maddox. "It's me. Come on. I have a plan." I help Maddox out of the crouching position and onto his feet. "Act like a prisoner. I will do all the talking. I'll act like I've taken you hostage till we find another goon to cloak. Someone who has a high credential card. I lucked out with this guy." "Alright, just get on with it." I pull Maddox's arms behind him and lead him from behind, holding his arms in place. We exit the container hall and enter a series of corridors with rooms branching off every once in a while. After some walking we run into another wolf who stops us. "Hey Leroy, where do you think you're going? Aren't you supposed to be guarding the weapons containers?" "Well I was when I caught this old fart trying to sneak around. Figured I'd take him down to the boss before tossing him in a cell." "Eh, good thinking. Hey, did you see the game last night? My god what a catch. I mean, for a whack like that I thought the ball would be into the crowd but nope. Caught it right in the outer zone." "No shit, really? I missed that one last night. Family stuff. Ya know." "No, I don't. What family stuff?" His tone sounded a bit more on guard. "Well you know how parents are these days. Always dropping in unexpectedly." "You're an orphan." I'm getting more nervous now. "I ment like my in-laws. You know how in-laws are. Right?" "You're single." He puts his hand on his gun and grabs my collar. "Alright now tell me who you really are before I put a bullet through your skull. "Uhh…" At that instant, Maddox crotch kicks the guy, crumpling him to the floor. I land a quick kick to the stomach before snapping his neck to silence him. "Uh huh. You'll do all the talking." "Shut and cloak him." Maddox applies the cloaking and together we hide the body in an air vent. Maddox continues to mock me. "You know how in-laws are." "Will you quit it?! We need to be a lot faster. Let's just find Jeron and Angela and get out of here. We can't afford another run in like that." I try speaking into the comms. "Mom, can you hear me? Mom?" "Chrzzt Iggzz." "Damn, the line must be getting scrambled. I'm only getting fuzz." "So we lost our eyes basically." "Yea. Be on high alert." We continue to walk down the corridors, passing by a few other goons with no more than a passing glance. After a fair bit of walking Maddox stops me. "Look here." He points to a room sign that reads, "Containment" "This must be where your guy is holding her." "Good call." I swipe my key card and the door opens. We slip inside and close the door behind us, sealing us in. In front of us in a long hall lined with prison style isolation cells. We scan the halls, with the occasional prisoner stopping us to beg for freedom or food and water. We scan the entire hall until I stop at a cell toward the end of the hall. The cell is empty, but looks like it once contained someone, as the bed sheets are messed up and a few crumbs of what seems to be bread litter the floor. I enter the cell and check the bed. Purple fur. I look at Maddox, who is outside the cell. "This must be where Jeron keeps her. Where she is now I have no idea." Then, we hear the door open and voices. "Quick, hide under the bed in an empty cell. NOW!" Maddox jumps into an adjacent cell and crawls under the low bed. I crawl under the bed in Angela's cell and listen to the voices that are slowly approaching. When they are within my range of discernible hearing, I listen in closely on the conversation. A deep, male voice with the strength and ferocity of a lion mixed with the soothing purr of a kitten speaks first. "You are quite the specimen, aren't you? It's really too bad that the cheeto puff you call a husband should be on his way to Istanbul right now. If I'm correct he will have tracked the license plate of that van and found a fake owner with a fake address in Turkey." The next voice to speak is the familiar silky yet aggravated tone of Angela. "You're wrong, you vile, disgusting, evil man! He's too smart for your awful trickery. I bet you he's in this building right now! Plotting on how to kill you!" "Well then. If you're so confident that he's here to save you, then you can continue to rot in this cell while I arrange your sale." I see the feet of Jeron right outside the cell as he tosses the body of Angela onto the floor and locks the cell door behind him. He turns and begins to walk away before stopping. "Oh, and Agent Senna, try to learn a bit more about foreign sports." I hear the cell door of Maddox's cell slam and lock and Jeron yells some commands in what I can assume is Finnish. Then, the hall plunges into darkness.
