I took a moment to reflect on everything that has happened so far. The more I thought about it, the more I believed this was all just a dream. Wait. That's it! This is probably just a weird dream, and if I pinch myself, I'll wake up in my bed, back to normal. I slowly grasped at the skin on my wrist and pinched as hard as I could, closing my eyes. I took a deep breathe and slowly reopened them. Well, there goes that theory. If it's not a dream and this is really my new life, then perhaps I should make the most of it. Except, there's only one problem with that. I have no idea how to use magic. Assuming I'm the only one who woke up in this new world today, that means, I am also the only one who hasn't been using magic their whole life. In conclusion, there is only one solution. Instead of having these inner monologues all day, I should probably listen to what Mr. Semko is saying. With that settled, I turned my attention to him and began to listen.
"...That being said, today we are going to be taking the attribute test, so I hope you all listened to what I said prior. Otherwise, you'll have no idea what to do."
Welp, He's right. I have no idea what to do. Whatever, I can't go crying over spilled milk, right? I'll just watch what the people in front of me do and take it from there. What can go wrong?
"Now, you can have one of these six attributes. Light, dark, earth, wind, fire, and water. It's rare, but it is also possible to gain an affinity for two attributes. Having an affinity for three or more attributes is unheard of. However, there is a rumor that there is one mage who acquired three, but it has yet to be proven by anyone."
As he finished his lecture on the attributes, He pulled a crystal from underneath the podium, placing it on top. Based off of what he said, you have to have an affinity for an attribute in order to use that kind of magic. If that is true, then my previous statement isn't necessarily true and the others here are new at this too, which means they haven't been using magic their whole life. Assuming there isn't magic that can be used without an attribute, I'm not as behind as I originally thought. Now, all that is left to do, is find out my attribute, which, I'm assuming we find out by using that crystal. I just have to hope I don't get called first.
"Alexis Von Kretschmann."
Alexis Von Ketchup? What kind of name is that? the only name from my previous life that sort of sounds similar to that is Alex Krieg. That guy was always so uptight and full of himself, but for some reason everyone still fawned over him. Sure, maybe he was perfect at everything and extremely handsome, but that doesn't give you the right to think you're above everyone else. As he approached the front of the room, that's when I saw it. This guy looked exactly like Alex. Not only did this world change my school, but the people's names too? Wait. why didn't my name change? I would've liked a cool, new-world name like, Legolas or Aragorn, or Hank. Hank? Why did I think of that name? Forget it, I should probably be paying attention so I know what to do when the time comes.
"Alright, Alexis, being that you are the son of the Lord ruling over Saint Haven, I figured it would be fitting for you to start us off."
"No problem, sir. Starting off with a good example is always a wise choice."
"precisely why I thought of it."
Good to see his personality didn't change along with his name. Arrogant to the bone, even when giving a compliment, it's still practically a nod to himself. As he approach the crystal, the class began to gossip.
"I wonder what attribute he is going to get?"
"He'll probably get light, like his father."
" Whatever it is, I bet it will be powerful."
As everyone continued to chatter, I focused in on what he was doing so I'm not completely in the dark about the process. He placed his hand over the crystal and almost immediately, it started to illuminate. After a few moments, the crystal started to generate two little balls inside of it. One was yellow and the other one was blue.
"By the gods, to think it would happen with the first student to take the test. Alexis, it would seem you have an affinity with both the light and water attributes. I'd expect nothing less from the son of the lord."
"I'm just glad I was able to be a good example for you sir. I hope everyone gains some confidence after seeing what I was able to accomplish."
Of course, leave it to him to gain a double attribute. Whatever, now I just have to wait until my turn. It seems like all I have to do is place my hand over the crystal and it will automatically determine my attribute. To be honest, I might not be as powerful as Alexis but, just being able to use magic at all would be huge for me. No matter what I get, I'm gonna make the most of this new life.
"Avery Erendale."
Avery? Her name didn't change much. Although, I don't quite remember what her last name was in my old world but, she was always the top student of the class. Alexis might be great in pretty much everything, but she was the only one he couldn't beat when it came to grades. She was generally quiet, but she was well liked by the other students. I'm actually curious of what she might get.
Following the same process, Avery made her way up to the crystal and placed her hand over it. again it began to illuminate, creating a smokey black ball.
"The dark attribute. The rarest one of them all. Fitting for the top of the class."
"Thank you, sir."
So the dark attribute is the most rare. Being that the other four are the basic elements, I'm guessing light is also a rare attribute to get. It's slow, but I'm beginning to get a grasp on all these attributes and how each falls into place within the spectrum.
As the other students were called, I watched to see if there was anything else to using this crystal. There were water attributes, fire, earth, wind, however, no one else got a double attribute or even that of light or dark. Without further ado, my name was finally called, last of course but, that makes sense considering the start I had to this day.
"Alright, Soren, now I know how short of an attention span you've been having today so in case you forgot, you only need to pour a little bit of your mana into the crystal."
"Yeah, I got it."
Thank god for explanation ex-machina. I approached the crystal and placed my hand above it. Okay. This will be easy, thanks to teach. Now, I know that all I have to do is pour a bit of mana into the crystal and then it'll give me my attribute. Piece of cake.
"Well, are you going to do it."
Yep. As I thought. I have no idea how to use this so called mana! Okay, let's relax. think about everyone else. What did they do that allowed them to pour mana into this thing? I don't know! They just placed their hands over it and it worked. How the hell am I supposed to know what to do! Calm down, stop panicking. I did enough of that earlier today. All I have to do is concentrate. I can figure this out.
"Soren?"
"I got it, don't worry."
Just imagine all this so called mana is building up inside you, deep within your core. build it up then have it come rushing out of your hands and into the crystal. Come on. I got this. Just picture it and... push!
"Wait! Soren that's-"
Just then a huge burst of light emitted from the crystal, nearly blinding everyone and pushing a few of the desks over.
"Soren! That was way too much mana! Just look at this mess!"
I did it? I did it! Who cares if I nearly blinded every one! I actually used mana! Hold on, settle down, let's not celebrate yet. I still have to see what my attribute is. I moved closer to the crystal to see what color formed inside it.
"huh? Uh, Mr. Semko, what does pure white mean?"
He walked up to the crystal to examine it.
"Well, if it isn't showing any of the specified colors, then I can only assume that it means you have no affinity for any of the attributes."
"What?"
That's when the class began to laugh again. As they laughed Alexis walked up to me, placing his hand on my shoulder.
"Don't worry, it may mean you will be kicked out of the school, but you can still join the guard and fight with honor for our country, sword and shield. With me and the powers that I was granted leading the way, I promise you'll be safe."
That is definitely not what I needed to hear.
"I'm sorry, Soren, but I'll have to report this to the headmaster of the school. Please, come with me. the rest of you return to your seats and wait until I get back."
As I followed Mr. Semko out the door, I couldn't help but think, is this really it? I woke up in this world of magic and I still can't even use it. Why even bring me to this world if I wasn't going to have an affinity for any of the attributes. What a cruel joke. I might as well have just stayed in my own world. As we approached the Headmasters office, I prepared myself for the worst. Fitting, isn't it? I was a nobody back in my world, and I 'm a nobody here. I wake up in this world of magic and I'm forced to live in it attributeless.
