Chapter 42 - She Wants a Daughter-In-Law

As per Lin Yao Yao's instructions for the remaining half of the phone call; Lucas was told to wait for Lin Que to get off his shift so that they could spend some time together. Even though Lucas tried rejecting his mother's naughty ideas, he couldn't help but accept at the end. If he continued refusing her request, she could nag him nonstop.

After the call ended, Lucas patted Lin Que's shoulder and shook his head. "Sigh, Big Brother. I swear mom seriously wants a daughter-in-law to play with. If she really wanted someone to dress up and go shop with, why couldn't she give us a little sister instead? This way, she wouldn't have to worry about our lonesome life."

Lin Que pinched the hand on his shoulder and leaned back on his chair. "I guess we never told you about this. When mom was carrying you, she almost miscarried. That's why after you were successfully delivered, dad forbid mom from getting pregnant again. He tied his tubes even though he wished to have a daughter as well."

Lucas almost jumped from his seat, "Eh?! Why didn't they tell me that? Damn, most families would want sons, but ours is the opposite."

Lin Que nodded, "That's why you need to dote on mom more. Stop going against her all the time and listen to her words. She told the doctor to save you if they could only save either one. Anyways, it's time for me to have a talk with my patients. Are you going to leave now?"

Rolling up his sleeves, he read the time and realized it was time for his next shift. Afraid that Lucas would cause trouble around the hospital, he wanted to see him off first before walking around to check up on patients.

As if he could read his older brother's thoughts, he waved his hands sideways in a slow fish slap motion. "It's been a while since I've visited. I'll walk around the area to see what I missed while I've been gone. Go ahead if you have something to do. I promise I won't bother anyone, especially your future girlfriend. I wouldn't dare scare her away."

Once Lucas has determined on something; he wouldn't change his mind easily. Therefore, Lin Que didn't bother making him leave. As long as Lucas doesn't interrupt anybody's work, it would be fine.

Meanwhile in Lily's room, Lily immersed herself through various websites on her laptop as she opened tab after tab on Google Chrome explorer. "This should be enough for research...Let's see. How to test if you like a guy and see if he likes you back."

She mumbled to herself as she scrolled down the list of methods on the website. "First, pin the guy to the wall and listen to his heart beat. But isn't this stupid? If I got pinned to the wall out of nowhere, my heart would be pounding like an elephant having diarrhea. Second bullet point is to hold his hand and see if there are electricity feelings. If you feel the shock, then it means you are interested in the guy...."

"Pffft! Isn't that same as farting? Useless. Exit this webpage. Next site. How to seduce a guy to bed...EXIT. How to flirt with a guy...All these flirting lines are lame. I could come up with better ones if I wanted to, sigh. This tab..No. That tab...What the hell is this? Strip and tie him to bed to make him yours? Forget these websites!"

She unplugged the charger, turned her laptop off and buried her face back into the pillow, where she originally positioned her head. Her fingers slowly combed through her hair and untangled some knots as she thought of ways to test out her feelings.

It wasn't sure when, but she ended up falling asleep while hugging her knees with her head leaning against the pillow on her lap. Lin Que purposely checked up on her last so they could spend more time together.

When he got to her room, he saw her sleeping soundly in such an uncomfortable position. "How do you fall asleep like this? Doesn't your neck and back ache? Your arms will turn numb too." Carefully removing the pillow between her face and lap, he replaced that spot with his palm. His movements were steady but quiet.

Perhaps the warmth of his palms felt different compared to the soft pillow of hers, her eyelashes fluttered as her eyelids slowly lifted up. "Ah! My arms are numb! My cheek too!" She complained as she tried stretching it out.

He stared at her lazy stretches as her cheeks blushed a rosy apricot color and eyes looked like calm waves of the ocean. "Ahem." He cleared his throat as she hadn't realized his presence. Startled by his sudden cough, her butt slanted to the side and made her lose balance.

"W..When did you get here?" she asked.

"Not too long ago. Sorry, did I scare you?" He helped her sit up as she rubbed her numb butt.

"No. I was just surprised to see someone next to me right after a nap. What time is it?" She yawned naturally as if she didn't mind seeing a man by her bed after sleeping.

"It's a little past eight. Even the sun set already. It's raining tonight, so it'll be chillier than other nights. Make sure you cover yourself up when you sleep. Eat dinner first before going back to bed." Although he was giving her a reminder from a doctor's perspective, a part of her thought otherwise.

Once she heard it was raining tonight, her expression stiffened. "It's raining tonight? I hope it's not a thunderstorm."

"Hmm? Are you scared of thunder?" He asked as he fixed strands of her disheveled hair.

"En. I get scared from the sound of thunder, especially when it is dark." She lowered her voice as if she was afraid of the thunder god hearing her words.

"Then leave the lights on while you go to sleep tonight. I'll let the nurses know." He patted her head as he smiled affectionately at her. His voice was so warm and soothing she almost forgot about her fear.

"Are..Are you on shift tonight too?" She looked at the time and compared it to his work schedule from other times of the week. 'He should be getting off work in a few minutes. Maybe he isn't doing an overnight shift tonight.'

She didn't realize how obvious the small hint of disappointment on her face was when she asked the question.

"Mm. I'm on the shift." Lin Que replied as he brushed her fringe and continued chatting with her.

Outside the room, Lucas almost banged his head against the wall when he heard his brother say he was running another shift after this one! He facepalmed and thought, 'Bro! I'll pull out my invisible white flag and wave it at you. You are getting off this minute, yet you decide to stay because she said she's scared of thunder?!'

'Are you really that punctual brother of mine who gets off shift without staying a second extra? What happened to sleep? No, no. What'll happen to me? I was told to follow you. Mom, can I go home? I suddenly feel like it's not that bored at home after all.'
