Chapter 8 - Chapter 8. The Calm After the Storm

Donna woke up the next morning in a hospital room feeling much more sore and bruised then she realized the night before.

John had talked with her on the phone shortly after she arrived at the hospital last night. He and Deanna were out of town. He had called her as soon as he heard. He told Donna that there were several other injuries in their neighborhood but none serious and two other homes besides theirs were seriously damaged but no one lost their their live which was a blessing since the tornado was a F3. An F3 tornado can have winds up to 200 miles an hour and cause severe damage. Donna had learned about tornadoes and their scale from the local weather channel's presentation that they show early in the Spring. Tornadoes run on a scale of F0 (winds from 40-72 mph - mild damage) to F5 (winds from 261 to 318 mph - total devastation). She also knew that an F3 could have easily taken her life since her bedroom and that side of the house took a direct hit.

John told her that he would be responsible for the insurance papers, etc., only if she wanted him too and she did. Whatever else John was, he was excellent in getting things done and he had personally designed and supervised the building of every nook and cranny of their house.

John had also offered their Lake house for Donna to stay at while the house was being rebuilt which she also gladly accepted. He and Deanna were going ahead with their wedding which meant the divorce would need to be settled shortly also but John didn't want to bring anything else down on Donna until later. They had already agreed on the settlement since Texas is a state where assets are considered community property (usually a 50-50 split of assets and debts) and both had saved their money wisely so neither would be hurting for money. Donna could have really caused John and Deanna some grief but after Donna 's stunt of using John's personal credit card to finance clothes, food, etc., for the Seattle weekend, she felt sure her revenge was sufficient, besides, she was ready to just get on with her life at this point. A lot of women would have taken John to the cleanersl!

Donna's family doctor, Dr. Johnson, a friend of Donna and John's, came by and told her that everything was fine internally, but that her foot injury was going to keep her off work for up to three months since she had some torn ligaments along with the sprang and she would need crunches for several weeks and lots of rest with the foot to be elevated. Donna's job was a busy one as well as a lot of administrative duties and Dr. Johnson did not want her back in the job, until he could see some results with the healing. He told Donna to let the hospital get everything ready and she could check out by late afternoon.

Donna called JoAnn and told her she would most likely be ready to leave the hospital about the time JoAnn got off work. JoAnn had beaten the ambulance to the hospital that early morning that Donna was injured and when they moved Donna to a room, JoAnn told Donna that she was going to get her extra bedroom downstairs set up for Donna and she could stay with her until she was more mobile and less in pain and that she would take her home from the hospital. When Donna told her she couldn't put her out and would just go to a nearby hotel to

stay, she thought JoAnn would attack her right there in the hospital! Oh no you won't Donna! It's settled do you understand? Donna laughed and said "Yes madam!" and gestured with a salute! JoAnn laughed and said "Glad that's settled!" Donna teared up and hugged JoAnn. "I guess I'd forgotten what a real friend was like!"

The world was righting itself again for Donna and she smiled to herself and laid down to get a quick nap before she had to get ready to leave the hospital.
