Chapter 16 - curiosity

In the morning Ryan woke up and stretched his body as he went over the plan for the day. "Well since yesterday we had leg training maybe I could let them swim for the day. They worked pretty hard after all and they will most likely be sore so having them have some fun won't be too bad. Now since that's planned and all, let's see what's good for the taking today hehe."

He looked at the first skill and quickly moved on since there was no application to it. He also had no idea what the limitations of the skill were or what it actually did. "Does this let you change the flavor of it or something?"

When he saw the second one he had a big smile on his face "This one is freakin cool, I always wanted to scuba dive but never really had the chance. I could really use this now and when I transform back into a human."

The next one made his body shiver "The fuck, why would this even be in here? At the moment my arms are what I need in order to get up and even if I was human I wouldn't use it. That would just look creepy and disgusting ugh."

He spotted the skill right below and wanted to hit his head against the wall "What the hella are wring with these stupid abilities."

The last skill caught his eye and he wanted to choose it right away but couldn't "Dang it if only I had enough points. So far this is the only skill that might allow me to affect the others, not just me. I could have also used this while hunting since I wouldn't have to think about being quiet. No, I can still get it but I would have to stop refreshing and eating more cores. The one that ate yesterday gave me only 5 points. Meaning that it would probably take at least 2 weeks to get it."

After thinking about it for a few minutes he nodded to himself "It's worth it". He looked at the closest pup and used his paw to lightly tap on her head. The pup slowly opened her eyes and looked around "Hmm what's going on?"

Ryan smiled and shook his head "Not much, just time to wake up and begin training. Think that you could wake up the others while I get things ready?"

She slowly nodded and began to stand up, meanwhile he left the den and began looking for Sun Blaze. He found the red wolf dragging a fox with his jaws, he ran over to him and looked at the dead body "Hey Sun Blaze, did you hunt that?"

The large wolf dropped the corpse and nodded "Yeah I found him when we were our patrolling. It's one of the biggest ones that I've gotten so far hehe."

Ryan nodded and began inspecting it "I remember eating a smaller one of these last time. Do you think that you could tell me about it?"

Sunblaze used his paw to pat Ryan's head "Of course Viper Pup, well to start these usually hunt in packs of around 5 the biggest pack I've seen had about 11 of them. They are pretty smart and sneaky, they hide and set ambushes. When someone walks nearby they create fireballs and shoot them roasting alive whoever was unfortunate enough to walk by"

Ryan looked at the dead body and then at the wolf "Doesn't that mean that you should stay away from them? If you said that they are smart and hunt in packs doesn't that mean that you were in danger when you went after this one."

The red wolf's eyes began to shine and he nodded "I guess that what Fire Claw tells the rest of us is true. I just wish that all the apprentices were as observant and smart as you. It's true that it would be dangerous for others but you seem to forget that I myself use fire, their attacks aren't as effective, we found this guy and made sure to cut away all his opportunities of escape. I was the one that attacked and the others stayed on the sidelines and prepared to help in case it really was a trap. Good thing he was alone so it was all pretty easy. But to correct something that you said earlier, if they are dangerous then that just means that there's even more reason to kill them"

Ryan nodded and took one last look at the fox "You're right, that way we can make sure that our pack is safe huh."

"Yeah that's exactly right, so did you need me to heat up the water?"

He looked at the wolf and nodded "Yeah, how did you know?"

Sun Blaze used his snout to point behind him, when he looked around he found that all the pups were running towards him with their gaze stuck on the fox. "Looks like they are craving some fox haha."

Ryan shook his head "No don't, they will be swimming today, if they eat before that and get in the water then it'll make them feel sick. Besides, you said that it was the biggest one that you've caught so share it with your special someone. I've heard that you are pretty popular among the ladies haha."

The red wolf looked at him surprised "Really, didn't notice hehe"

"Yeah, anyway how about teaching us about things that we can hunt later when you have time?"

Sun Blaze seemed to think about it and nodded "I'd love to but not tonight because it's going to be a full moon."

He looked at the wolf and his tail started wagging from side to side "Do you think that I might be able to go? I heard about the meetings from father and I've been dying to get to see the wolves from the other packs."

The wolf shook his head "Well that's up to your father, I've personally never heard of having a pup in the meeting so your chances don't look so good."

Ryan's ears dropped and Sun Blaze sighed "well I'll go heat up the water" and dragged the body of the fox towards the pool. The pups stayed sitting behind Ryan until he turned around and pointed at the red wolf "Go with him and wait till he heats the water. Make sure to be careful though the pool is now deeper so you can drown if you're not careful."

They nodded and ran behind Sun Blaze and tried to help him carry the dead fox. Ryan turned around and found River Paw and Mud Paw with another wolf and ran towards them "River Paw do you think that you could look after the other pups, they will be swimming."

The young wolf with bluish fur nodded "Don't worry I got it."

Ryan thanked him and was about to leave when he heard Mud Paw whisper to the other wolf "These stupid pups are so annoying, especially Viper Pup. Everyone acts like he is so smart it's becoming a pain, just wait till he grows up and becomes worthless."

He stopped and turned around "Mud Paw hasn't it crossed your mind that if everyone except you thinks something then there's a high chance that you might be wrong. As for the part of me becoming worthless at least, it's still something that is unknown. Sadly for you, it looks like you didn't turn out as useful as you might have wanted to be."

The brown wolf stood up and prepared to jump on him but was stopped by the one next to her "Calm down Mud Paw he's only a pup, he doesn't know what he's saying."

"Get out of my way Feather Paw I'm going to rip him apart."

He gave her a small smile "Alrighty then, I'll be going now. Thanks for the help Feather Paw, I owe you one."

She simply gave him a small nod and continued trying to calm Mud Paw down.

He looked around and spotted his mother and ran to her. She turned around when she heard him and stopped "Hey Viper Paw what are you so happy about?"

He wagged his tail and smiled "Hi mother, I heard that you guys were going to go to a meeting and wondered if I could go with you."

She looked at him surprised and immediately shook her head "There is no way that is going to happen. You are far too young to go, besides all you would do is get in the way and slow us down."

His tail and ears dropped again and he looked at her with puppy eyes, quite literally. "Are you sure that there will be nothing to change your mind?"

Star Light didn't even hesitate before she shook her head again "Nope not a thing, until you become an apprentice you can't go."

He nodded and began slowly walking to the pond, once he was there he laid flat and closed his eyes "I really want to go tho, that way I can take a look at what we're up against. I'm also wondering what they are going to discuss. Star Light said that I couldn't go because A) I was too young, and B) I would get in the way and slow them down. Can't do anything about being too young but what if I followed and they never saw me. That way it wouldn't matter if I'm too young and I wouldn't slow them down."

The rest of the day he thought about his plan over and over while he heard the pups splashing water. When the sun started to go down River Paw told the pups to go back to the den and rest.

He walked up to the apprentice and asked "Are you going to the meeting?"

The bluish haired wolf nodded "Yep I was told to go by Fire Claw, the other apprentice that was with me is also going to go."

Ryan nodded and looked at him "What is the meeting like?"

River Paw practically jumped from excitement "It's the best Viper Pup, you're surrounded by so many different wolves that have different scents, attitudes, and personalities. Then the alphas talk about what's been going on in their territories. Sometimes if nothing bad has happened we even play some fun games and compete with each other."

He nodded and thanked the pup as he thought "There's no way in hell, I'm not going."

Ryan walked into the den and found all the pups waiting for him since they had developed the habit of completely surrounding him when they slept. He shook his head and began to speak "Listen, I won't be sleeping here tonight. I'm going to check something out, if someone comes and asks for me tell them I'm sleeping alright?"

They nodded but Fang Pup walked forward and tilted his head "Where are you going Viper Pup?"

"Somewhere, I need you guys to promise me you won't try to follow me. If you do then you can forget about training with me. You guys have to show that I can trust you by staying here okay."

Some of them hesitated but in the end, they all nodded and laid down. Ryan waited in the entrance of the den looking for any movement. Finally, after about 20 minutes he saw the white pelts of his father and mother followed by another 5 wolves.

He nodded to himself and looked back at the 'sleeping' pups, "remember don't follow."

He ran out of the den and into the forest, Ryan gave himself a quick roll around in the dirt and sniffed in the air trying to locate his pack's scent.

After a few seconds, he found it and smiled on the inside "Bingo!"
