Chapter 5 - A Semblance of Normality

"Alex what are you doing?"

"Practicing."

"I can see that, but what exactly is that for?"

Looking at her younger brother look closely at a white leather bracelet that he probably stole from mom, she re-asked her question.

"What are you doing with the bracelet Alex?"

...

"Oh my god! I can't what's worse, the energetic you, or you when you get stupidly obsessive over things."

Barely glancing at his pouting older sister, he calmly responded.

"It's the same me, just like how you telling dad to stop hugging you is the same you that loves messing with him by getting places where you shouldn't be. Speaking of... why where you in my bed?"

Guiltily looking away from her younger brother, she tried to make him explain what he's doing.

"Qrow said that when he found me, that I had a blanket right?"

Nodding at him, she begged him to go on.

"Well then, in this freakishly organized house of ours, where nothing is thrown away and everything is checked once every couple of months, it disappeared?"

"Stuff gets lost sometimes ya know?"

"Yang, where was the purple skirt you wore a few weeks back?"

"Downstairs in the living room, in the blue dresser, in either third or fourth drawer from the top, at the very back of it."

"Exactly! You only wore that once or twice, yet you know almost exactly where it is!"

"I don't know where this is going."

Turning to look at his sister, who he was sure couldn't be that dumb, he sighed in exasperation. "Last time Dad was here, he and Tai talked about how my aura, and my semblance were already unlocked, and nobody here did it."

"I don't remember this."

Marveling at how forgetful she could be, he told her that she didn't remember because he spent the night with her so that she wouldn't cry. He hated seeing people that he cared about cry.

"Doesn't matter, what does matter is that we have a missing blanket and a semblance that, despite me working for months, I still couldn't figure out was it was. But I think I got it!"

"Ooh ooh is it something cool like mom's or dad's! I bet when mine pop out it's gonna be so cool! Like pam! Wooosh!"

"Ah, er... maybe? Depends how far I can take it, like Dad's is bad luck, which, in a free for all, or a one versus many, is the best! But in everyday life, due to the fact that he can't tone it down past a certain point, it sucks for that."

Nodding in remembrance of her uncle's hijinks, she told him to stop beating around the bush and tell him what he thought his semblance was.

"I think I can make items."

"Ehhh? That's it? That's kinda lame..."

"Firstly, so is getting angry, but that's Tai's and yours is probably something like that based on how much of his features you have. Also, no it isn't because now we don't really need to buy clothes, and here's the kinda cool part, it might, the keyword being might be able to make weaponry."

"Ohh? That's so cool! I get the point now!"

"Did you- did you just? Oh god no don't let this be a running thing."

"Why, you got a problem with me trying to make some puns?"

Choosing to ignore the rhetorical question from his sister, he looked at the bracelet, trying to get his semblance to recreate it. When Yang finally decided to call it a night and go to sleep he started to feel something pulsing inside of him, like a wave originating from the bottom of his lungs. Once he realized it though, it immediately vanished and was replaced by an overpowering urge to sleep. Had he not closed his eyes he would have been able to see to things, the first a blue screen hovering in the air, congratulating him for his achievement.

However, what would be more important to Alex, were the two white leather bracelets that he was clutching in his hand.

Taiyang Xiao Long was at an impasse. On one hand, his precious daughter had just had her second birthday, and Summer was most likely going to give birth in the upcoming month. However, Alex was still something he couldn't get used to. The two were polite to each other, but only as if they were mild acquaintances. Despite calling his wife Mom, he would only refer to him as Tai, Taiyang, or the worst of the three, Old Gold. There was a barrier between the two and he didn't like it. More and more he would find himself suspicious of him, and he couldn't make himself call him Son. Despite realizing how absurd it was to be suspicious around a boy not even to years old, he would get chills sometimes, as if Alex's eyes weren't the gems he was named for but an abyss that would devour him at the soonest chance. His unknown semblance was definitely worrying. While it wasn't entirely uncommon for children to have unlocked auras, it was typically only with those who had parents who were huntsman. Meaning that something or someone killed the parents, but spared the child, which was entirely too odd for a Grimm's typical behavior, but not entirely rare with some of Salem's psychopaths. He hated thinking that this child could or would harm this family, but it was too unnatural for it to be impossible. The main thing that prevented Tai from outright shipping the kid to Ozpin was the fact that Alex only had a problem with Tai, and was perfectly happy with his new sister and mother, and seeming to be a bit protective of Yang. Now that, Tai could work with. If he were to train him up, then with the two of them, they could stop unwanted boys from hitting on either Yang or Ruby, not that they couldn't defend themselves, just that sometimes, an intervention must be made.

Summer was worried. She wasn't worried about Ruby's upcoming birth, no, everything was going great, and worrying would only cause problems for her new daughter. She was worried about Alex. Last night, she found him completely passed out, clutching two white bracelets, meaning that he made a new one. Although she was happy that he found his semblance, she worried about how attached to both her and Yang he'd become. Given the dangerous nature of both her job and the fact that her eyes made her a definite threat to Salem, she knew that most likely, one day, she would die. And that scared her. Obviously the fact that death would be a real pain, but how would the rest of the family cope? Tai would break down as he came so close to doing when Raven left, Yang might be fine, but Alex? She wasn't sure. That was worrying. He had clearly grown attached to her, and unlike with Tai, had no problem with her being his substitute parent, but he clearly had mild issues. The fact that he was quite obviously a Faunus and not related to anybody was hard for the child at first. He seemed to be using both her and Yang as emotional anchors. While she liked the fact that he was managing his emotions, the way he was doing so was dangerous for the kind of life she, and they would live.

In the morning, when Alex woke up he noticed that a few things were off in his room. Firstly, although in no means a problem, Yang wasn't hogging all the blankets, due to the fact that she wasn't there. Secondly, the second bracelet that he had felt in his hand before passing out was nowhere to be seen. Thirdly, the original bracelet in his hand now had some sort of ethereal glow about it, although nothing appeared to have physically changed.

Finally, and perhaps the most worryingly, he had a new tail.

That meant that he needed new clothes, and with how draining making a bracelet was, he didn't think that he was up to the task. Which left him with two options, the first suck it up and get fluffed, which honestly felt pretty good (Not that he would ever tell them that) or two, try to get the tail to go away. Focusing on the spot at the bottom of his back, he imagined something pulling in, as if the tails were to be sucked up by a straw. Despite the accurate (and rather horrifying) mental image, the most he could do was make them smaller.

"Oi Alex! Mom and I are coming up to see if you're alright!"

Shit

This is the worst time. They cannot, under any circumstance, get in my room right now.

"Uhhh... yeah I'm awake, I'm feeling fine, no need to come in here!"

"Gonna do it anyways!"

Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit Shit ShitShitShitShitShitShitShitSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHIT!

"Uhhh, could you not?"

"Alex, Yang wants to go in your room, are you sure you want to go against your older sibling?"

"But mooom! I don't want her to! It's my room, my rules!"

"My house, my rules, and I say that Yang can go in."

"Is this a permanent rule, or just for now"

'Please no. Please no. Please no. Please no.'

'Please yes. Please yes. Please yes. Please yes.'

"No."

'YES!'

'NO!'

'Now that I've lost the battle, but won the war, I need to get the tail to be absorbed because if they come in here, and I have two tails, I'm screwed. All I need to do is think of a vacuum, just think of a-'

-FOOP-

'Oh. Well that works, weird noise but I'm sure it'll go away. Now it's fine if they come in as there is nothing for them to fluff. Wait-'

-BANG-

'My poor door'

"HUH! Alex what happened to your tails! Did you get hurt?"

"NOOOOOOOOOOOO! My younger brother is tailless now! ... his ears will do for now..."

"Uhh, no I'm fine, I just wanted to know if I could absorb them-it, if I could absorb it."

"Can you, like, un-absorb it?"

"Are you going to immediately stroke it?"

"Mom, since he's in your house, do you give me permission to fluff his tails?"

"Yes. Of course I do!"

"Bring em out, fox-boy!"

Sighing, Alex tried to bring out a tail, only for-

-POOF-

Shocked by the new ability of the son, they each reacted in their own way.

"A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one." -Summer

"OOOOHHH THERE ARE MORE!" -Yang

"What do you mean there are-"

Looking down at above his ass, he saw them. Two white, fluffy tails, one of which (he couldn't tell) was about to lose its innocence. In light of this new fact, only a single word came to his mind.

"Fuck."

"Language"
