I took Sariah to a healer later that afternoon. She's fine. She's just not going to be seeing too well for a little while. I had to talk to her boss, Chandra who offered me an adventurer job. Sariah had told her about the mirror exploding in her hands and I mentioned how I had seen my reflection clearly. Chandra believes that me seeing my reflection was a fluke because the mirror is broken and doesn't work once it's shattered, but that it exploded, so I must have a foreign magic that hadn't been discovered.
I thought about my anger at the mirror for telling me that I have no magic. I remember mentally demanding it to break, to shatter into pieces and to just die. Maybe my exact words weren't "just die," but I did want it destroyed. I remember imagining it and then I got angry and what I was thinking happened. It had to be a coincidence.
Chandra told me that most guilds wouldn't accept someone into their ranks with so much mystery to them, but she would assist me in finding out what I can do. She already doesn't have many members and any added members would do her guild good. Plus she's been given a few missions that need to be completed already, so she gave me the paperwork to fill out and I sat down for about twenty something minutes and filled it out. It mostly asked my power range, height, and other things that I haven't checked in a long time. It even asked for experience.
Chandra took the papers and scanned them. I watch her wide hips as she sits down. She barely has any hair on her curly head and she looks to be in her forties, but she's still lively. I like that she can still be so nice to people and brave even though she's so much older than most other people around here. She finishes quickly and beckons me to her. I go, and she taps the chair beside her and starts speaking. "You're class F. You know so little of yourself that I can only place you in the lowest rank there is. However, you can still rank up with more missions successfully completed. Each mission has its own reward. The higher ranked the mission, the better the reward. Keep that in mind. The Class F missions are in the basement. Those are where you will find the lower ranked missions. You can start now." So I guess I just stand up and start? She gives me that "why are you still standing there" look and I scatter into the basement. There's a board standing at the end of the room with "class F" written in sloppy bold.
Huh. Guess that's just how it is then. I quickly look through the missions. These really are the lowest of the low.
CLASS F
Missions:
-Little girl cat stuck in tree a few blocks from headquarters. Retrieve and return.
-A pink rabbit lost in Sylvania. Retrieve and return
-A fox problem in North Way
-A large amount of boars killing all of the newly harvested crops and livestock in the Dark Coast
-Get information from a bar in South Trent from Kumbers Terret.
That last one seemed easy enough so I grab the paper. It's also much more rewarding than all the others. And since South is where Izzi, Max, and Zack are heading, it's perfect. I leave the basement and walk out the door. I grab out the map to find South Trent. It's a very, very small place on the northeastern coast of Mercasiana which just sounds like Mexico, Canada, Asia, and Indiana mixed together. This place really is strange.
I need to find an easy way to travel from here, but I'm not sure where to look. I should've stayed and asked Chandra about it and not rushed out like I knew what I was doing.
My clothes don't exactly go with the style of this place, but I can just say I made it. On the way across town, I spot a horse. I've ridden a few of those at home so it should be fine. Then again I was ten when that happened. I decided the just jump in the back of one of the item wagons and ride it for a while. I keep a lookout outside and follow the map. When I look out about an hour or so later, the scenery is very familiar. I look at the map. We passed South Trent. I jump out of the wagon and head south. The town of South Trent is a small town huddled up against the side of what looks like a mountain but that I know is a hill.
It's not hard to find the only bar in town nor is it hard to find the buff man with the name of Kumbers Terret. He's sitting at the end of the bar and I sit on the table behind him and try to eavesdrop without being noticed.
The place is so full of people and laughter that I don't notice someone walk up behind me. "Hey there, pretty lady." Dang it, it was Kumbers. That's still an awful name. His mother must have hated him.
I wave what I hope is a friendly greeting. Kumbers is tall with broad shoulders and most definitely taller than me, reaching about 6 and a half feet high. I don't quite know how to respond to the guy I'm supposed to be peeping on, so I give a tiny wave. Unfortunately for me, he sits down beside me and starts talking to his buddies. If I'm really 17 in this world, shouldn't I be, like... too young for this guy? Is this not illegal here?
Holy crap, I'm jumping to conclusions. This is only a Class F mission so why would it be on class F if it was dangerous. One of Kumbers' buddies pulls him to the side, distracting him. I can make out only a few words; "...Consort chosen...King Henry is... last week... what I heard... Isabella got... escaped... nights ago." Finally, louder, the man slaps Kumbers' back and yelled, "what do ya think, huh?"
I know what they were talking about immediately and try to puzzle the conversation together.
Okay so... A consort was chosen. King Henry is... something. What happened last week? Wait, if it's the King's Consort, he must have already chosen his bride and they got married last night. What was the rest? Isabella escaped a few nights ago. That must be it. But what about him yelling what he thinks? Was that just for show? It must be.
And Isabella? Could it be Izzy? She is a Feraad, she said. But maybe it's the wrong Isabella. Maybe Izzy isn't a nickname. But if it's not then...
I hear Kumbers telling his buddy what he knows and the news shocks me.
"The stupid chameleon was seen heading this way a few days ago. Maybe we will catch the rat." The man snarled. I leap out of my seat and rush out the door, too quick for the burly men to stop me if they tried.
It definitely has to be Izzy. That must be why she could change her skin purple. She's a Feraad and her animalistic quality is chameleon skin. Easily hidden, but once revealed: so quickly hated.
They know where she's going and she's in some serious trouble. So are Zack and Max.
