While some were pillaging water resources, a few kilometres away, the three other guys were surveying an area from the top of a huge pile of rumbles. They were wearing bike's protective equipment and had a gun hidden under their t-shirt. They did not wear anything more as they wanted to look as legit riders as possible.
In front of them, the landscape looked like a proper apocalyptical movie scene. Not one, but two meteorites fell in the area!
One destroyed the building facing the coast guard base, and the other fell barely 200 metres away surrounding the base with flames and fumes. It was to breathe, and their eyes and throat were itchy.
Feeling unsecured, they heard gunshots coming from the base not far from them, the scene was chaotic!
After a few minutes, the party of three tried to make sense of the situation and began to brainstorm.
"I think some of the police officers have been exposed to the meteorite early, creating the first wave of confusion. Then the people working around here at the shipyard and others came to the police station to look for help, while some firetrucks came to manage the fire. This ended in more zombies and more problems." Nicolas was behaving like an MC of a second-rate American police TV show.
"Probably, or probably not, how are we supposed to know?" Jesper was more straight forward.
The fire was raging, menacing to reach the police building.
Suddenly an explosion startled the three Frenches, "BOOM!"
That was the middle of the police station that blown up to pieces.
"Holy shit! That scared me!" Jesper exclaimed. They were less than a hundred metres away from the scene and that was close enough for them to fill the explosion aftermath.
"What should we do?" asked Baptiste after getting back on his two feet.
"Wait I guess," answered Nicolas, "the more there is chaos the easier it is to get some good goodies, right?"
"Yes, but it also means that they might bring in the military very soon, or the building to totally collapse, or more zombies. And about the army, we saw a few on our way, right? So it is expected to would come to help here." Jesper was not keen to join this mess.
"Indeed, we have probably a very short window to try our luck." Baptiste did not get the hint of Jesper that wanted to retreat but understood he wanted to take action right now.
"I mean, I like extreme sport and spicy food, but this is something different!" Jesper interjected, cutting the two other ambitions.
Silence followed, they all knew that they were not James Bond and this was not a movie! If they went inside and things went south, it would be hard to get through!
"Ok, that might sound crazy, but what if we can steal a military boat?" Nicolas asked seriously.
"HAHAHAHA" Jesper almost peed his pants laughing.
After a few seconds, the situation became awkward. "You're not serious, right?" Jesper's face fell looking at Nicolas.
"Why not? Everything is burning, a lot of the police officers are probably dead, it is not too much to think we will get lucky and steal the boat."
"Do you know how a boat works?"
"Not really…"
"This is a military boat, probably a hundred times more difficult to operate, and you want to steal it? Are you right in your mind?" this time Jesper was not laughing at all.
"Ok! Ok! You beat me, that was just an idea, nothing serious," answered Nicolas flustered.
"Let's just try our luck, but safety first!" Baptiste did not have specific expectations, but the coast guard was close to the army in terms of equipment, and an army related to the sea, exactly what they needed! Also, this chaos was a great opportunity.
Reluctantly, Jesper followed the two crazy head moving forward. They were walking inside the dump yard of a boat construction company neighbour to the base, it took 5 minutes to close the 70 metres separating them from the base perimeter as they were very cautious.
During the stealthy walk, they could see a few zombies trying to get into the building in a fire, burning themselves to death, real death this time.
Just as they were about to take their gun, and move toward the inside of the base, they heard someone from behind.
"Hey, what are you doing here?"
'Shit, she scared me to death!'
Behind them, two police officers were coming holding guns.
"Sorry, sorry!" Jesper made a victim's voice, "we had a car accident, and some crazy guys tried to molest us, then we saw the fire here and came to see what was happening, and when we saw that was the police station we thought we could find help. But, just as we were about to ask for help, the station blew up! We were now wondering what to do."
This was a lot of bullshit made from half-truths! Nicolas and Baptiste were shocked, Jesper was good a spiting lie in the face of others!
"Ohhh I see, good to you we found you first! But why are you wearing protective gear?" Said the guy next to the policewoman.
"I mean, we had a bike accident, sorry, I got confused with my English!"
The two policemen did not know what to say, and since they had something more urgent in mind they did not wish to pursue.
The policeman said, "we are going to rejoin with our team inside, but we did not expect that it would be this bad here… You can follow us if you want, we might need help."
The three friends nodded. This opportunity looked like a pie that was falling from heaven! They truly had defying luck since the beginning of the day!
Then, the group of five started to head to the base, thinking it would be problematic if they were found out with guns, Nicolas and his friends took a steel bar each that was lying in the dump yard.
As they were advancing, a couple of zombies jumped at them.
The two police officers were playing by the book, trying to verbally warned the people assaulting them, but before they could realize how foolish it was, the zombies were already jumping at them. Baptiste and Nicolas blocked the first one, but the second one was too fast and scratch the male police officer face. Jesper hit the second one on the back making it fall on the police officer. Not waiting for more, Nicolas hit the zombies head, while Baptiste was mercilessly finishing the first one.
The fight only lasted 15 seconds.
"Eek!! Oh my god!" the female police officer fell on her butt, terrified, she was now pointing her gun toward the French guys. "Do not move, you murderer!" she was trembling.
"What the, we just saved her, right?" asked Jesper scratching his head.
"Keep calm, we can explain," said tentatively Nicolas to the women, pulling his hand up to show he was not hostile.
"There is nothing to explain, you murder them in front of police officers!"
The three friends were feeling awkward, standing still in a death zone. The fire was raging everywhere, some gunshots could still be heard from the building behind them. Zombies could fall on them at any moment and here they were, their hands in the air while being pointed a gun at by a clueless policewoman. They were not feeling lucky anymore!
"Adam, are you okay?" she asked her colleague, but she did not receive an answer.
"Guys we are in trouble!" Baptiste was very anxious, he already guessed that if you were not exposed to the meteorite beforehand, you could turn very fast, and it looked like the hypothesis was about to be verified very soon!
"Adam?" The policewoman was now looking at her fainted colleague. "Did you kill him too?" she asked the three civil.
"Nooo!" the three guys answered at the same time, shaking their head very fast.
"Let us explain, but first could you lower your gun, this is very stressful."
"No way, explain first!"
"He is going to be turned into a zombie! Believe us! Please shoot him!" Baptiste could not hold it anymore.
The Singaporean women froze, 'are they trying to trick me?', but then she saw her colleague twitching and making weird grumbling sound, she started to feel threatened.
"What is happening?!" she screamed in a high-pitched voice.
"We already told you, can you trust us?" Nicolas was feeling the urge to take action.
They did not have the time to finish the pointless arguing because the policeman was starting to push the dead body on top of him, and his eyes were now blood red!
The three made a step backwards, putting a small distance between them and the future zombie.
"Adam! What is happening, are you alright?"
"Shit, I can't watch her being slaughtered!" Nicolas jumped at her while she was focused on her colleague, he kicked her gun and shot with the gun the pulled from his back at the turned policeman. At this distance, three bullets were enough to kill it definitively.
"Oh my god…" the woman started to cry.
"Take the guns, we need to move now!" Nicolas did not want to spend more time in the open.
"Sure!" both Baptiste and Jesper nodded.
"What is your name?" Nicolas asked her.
"Stacy." She was trembling.
"Ok, Stacy, now it is not the time to fall in sorrow! Keep yourself together, we have to get inside the police station. What you saw are not human anymore, ok?"
She looked at him, tears still falling on her face.
"If I give you your gun back, will you be reasonable?"
Jesper was behind her and looked at Nicolas like he was stupid. He was gesturing with his hand, shaking it under his throat in a way 'what the hell! Don't give her the gun back!'
She nodded.
Nicolas shrugged his shoulder while looking at Jesper and handed the gun to the young women.
In his opinion, giving her a sense of security would be more efficient to make her lead the way for them. He took indeed a risk to give her back the gun, as she could be a stubborn one, but at the same time, he trusted that she would not be unreasonable, especially after seeing that they all had a gun now.
"Are you familiar with this base Stacy?" asked Nicolas.
"Yes, I work here."
"Good! Now bring us there, we need to find arms to defend ourselves and try to save as many people as possible." Nicolas barely tried to hide is true intention.
"Is it true, the zombie thing lah?" she was trying to probe their honesty.
"See for yourself!" Nicolas pointed to a silhouette that was coming toward them. The person still walking was missing an arm and its jaw was hanging very low, too low to be humanly possible. They did not need to explain anything anymore!
"Let me take it down," Baptiste said readying his steel bar.
Fifteen seconds later, the zombie's head was pierced by a steel bar and he fell on the ground.
"You sure are a natural!" Nicolas was impressed, he did not see Baptiste missing the mark until now.
"Let's hurry up! We don't know how many of them are around here." Jesper was anxious.
