Chapter 6 - Success?

Sitting in front of Jerry, Mike checks his equipment to ensure it is working properly. The readings he is receiving already were a lot higher then he hypothesized they would be. He looks over Jerry one more time before continuing.

"Okay Jerry, now all you need to do is focus on that day ten years ago. Visualize everything about that day. Remember how the weather was, if you can try to remember any smells that were around. You have to focus on every detail possible" Mike says.

After having the same dream for almost every night for ten years straight this was the easiest thing asked of him so far. He could feel himself being pulled toward that day. He was so focused on his destination that he didn't noticed lifting away from Mike's office. Flowing thru the ceiling and up thru the roof. He didn't notice the glow of another body several miles away, or the light of another being following him into space. Jerry didn't notice this, nor did he care, because he was finally going to get her back. He never held any hope that Mike would succeed in his research. What Mike had proposed to him so long ago was too impossible to believe. But now here he was, streaking across the cosmos, returning to his worst nightmare and his greatest dream. Suddenly he became aware of his surrounding, the bright light that was all that he could see was slowly starting to fade. He could just begin to see indistinct shapes. A soft breeze brought the smell of Whitecastles to his nose. The muffled sound of hundreds of people talking at once found his ears, and as the light completely went away, there she was. At this moment she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and she was yelling at him.

"I've had it with your lies Jerry! This is it I'm done! Don't ever contact me or try to see me again!" Lisa yells. She is wearing the outfit he remembers so well, her favorite pink t-shirt and dark blue jeans. As she turns to leave him he runs, she is only four feet away from him, but he runs like she is miles away. He grabs her wrist, spins her around and pulls her in for a bone crushing bear hug. Lisa is shocked by his suddenness. She tries to fight and push him away, but he lifts one arm and cups her face so that she is now looking him in the eye. When she stops struggling and he knows he has her undivided attention he tells her what he's been waiting ten years to say.

"Lisa I love you with everything I have, my complete heart and soul and I'm never letting go," Jerry passionately expresses to her. This is so unlike him that at first she is confused. Where did this come from. One he never ever showed PDA (public displays of affection), second he was always so nonchalant and cavalier about their relationship. Any time she tried to steer him toward an engagement he ran for the hills. Starting an argument over some nonsense. That was why she was upset with him now. Time and again he would confess his love for her begging for her to let him grow to be the man she deserves, the man she always wanted him to be. But he continuously let her down by refusing to grow up and mature. His video games, or animes or hanging with his boys was forever more important to him then her. So when she just asked him about his plans for them for the future, and he shrugged his shoulders with that stupid, idiotic look on his face that was the last straw. That is why she was yelling at him. She was expecting him to freeze up like he always did, cringe away from everyone's notice. So when he ran up to her and grabbed her wrist, her first thought was it was someone else. Then the feel of his arms around her possessing her, letting it been known to all on-lookers that she was his woman. Well her brain temporarily shut down, she was completely stunned. Finally to hear his confession of love spoken so passionately about her, to look into his eyes and see a new person looking back at her, what should she do. Could she allow herself to believe that he suddenly had an epiphany about her? Was this really happening or was she dreaming this? Breaking the spell Jerry continues professing his love to a very shocked Lisa. "Baby I can't tell you in words how I would feel if I ever lost you. You are and will forever be the most important person in my life. I love you baby." He looks her in the eyes and pulls her to a kiss, unbeknownst to her, he's been waiting for this for ten years.

When they finally separate Jerry looks her in the eyes and says, "I don't know what the future will hold for us, but I know that I want to be together with you forever in it. I want to marry you and make you the happiest wife on the planet." Lisa looked at him and couldn't keep the smile from her face. She went to take a step back from him and he grabbed her to him very quickly. He did it so hard and fast that it actually hurt a little. When she looked at his face he wasn't looking at her. He had a very serious almost angry look on his face, but it wasn't for her but at the street right behind her. That's when she became aware of the car driving right behind her. If Jerry hadn't pulled her she would have stepped right in front of that car. Lisa felt foolish for not paying more attention. She pulled him into another hug, "Thank you my knight in shining armor, I'll have to think of some creative ways to show you my gratitude later," she laughed. "I have to run now though because I'm late for class. My microbiology class is kicking my butt. Can you come by and help me study later?"

"I'm not even in college, couldn't one of your classmates help you better than I could?" Jerry replies with a smirk

"We both know you already understand this stuff better than I do, besides I really want to see you later"

"Nothing in the world could stop me from seeing you later", Jerry says then gives Lisa one last kiss before turning to head home.

Diane begins to cry uncontrollably. Can she really do this to Jerry? After watching not only their reunion, but Jerry's successfully saving her life, could she take all of that away from him. She could still feel the pull of the light source she sees across the galaxy. She glances behind her and sees the earth. The blue, white, and green jewel of our solar system. As she peers at it she thinks about her family. While she does this her vision zooms down to her kids. Tom is already home and he's being a good big brother. He's making a snack for Stacy and himself. Stacy is just getting off the bus. She has a big grin on her face and she chatting with her best friend Amanda. Not best friend its "Bestie", I have to remember to be more of a hip, cool mom. Diane starts to reconsider her plan. Things at home are not that bad, are they? That's when she hears the house phone ring. Looking at the phone she wonders who's calling. Her vision splits and part of it travels along the telephone wires to its source, Mikes office. When Tom answers the phone Diane can see her husband and her son at the same time, like two open windows on her computer. She can also hear everything they say.

"Hi Tom, is your mother home?", Mike asks

"No her car is here but she's not home right now, maybe she went for a walk," Tom replies.

"That's probably it. Can you give her a message for? Tell her I'll be working late, and I'll see her in the morning. K thanks champ." Mike blurts out in a hurry.

"Um dad I didn't want to worry mom, but I haven't been feeling good and I wanted to get your opinion on it," Tom says quietly

"Huh..? These readings are incredible.... oh yeah that's great champ I'll talk to you more about it tomorrow. Love you, give your sister a kiss and a hug for me bye." *click * Diane's heart literally breaks seeing her son brushed off so easily by his father. And for what? Research that will supposedly lead to fame and fortune. As she thinks of these things Diane is once again shifted through time. She sees Mike he's accepting an award for his research in time travel. Instead of being home more as he promised he is now awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to take his thesis from hypothetical to practical. She watches as her family gain notoriety and fame but lose their cohesiveness. Her children start mixing with the wrong crowds and begin doing drugs and drinking alcohol at a very early age. The pressure continues to increase for Mike, and he soon crumbles under it. The disappearance of his best friend sends Mike on a downward spiral that he never returns from. Diane sees that she soon leaves Mike and takes the kids with her. After sending Tom and Stacy to extensive rehab. As young adults her children and her finally feel like a family again. Mike is dead. The stress he was under and his depression leads him to swallow a bottle of pills. His final act of selfishness further pushes their kids down a slippery slope of self-destruction. Diane struggles with her own sanity. The loss of their father, her husband, the love of her life. It crushes her, she must focus only on her kids and ignore that hollow feeling that was slowly consuming her soul. She can't look anymore, she knew with all of her soul that she couldn't let that future happen.

She looks one last time at Jerry's future. Lisa graduates with honors thanks to Jerry's assistance. She completes her doctorate and becomes an Oncologist. She focuses on cancer research and finds the cure for a rare genetic cancer. Jerry becomes a stay at home dad after their first kid is born. It's a girl and they name her Diane after her Auntie Di. They have two more kids, both boys, Jerry Jr (JJ for short), and Michael after his Uncle Mike. They are very happy and truly still love each other after many years together.
