Chapter 30 - Ch.30: Brother?

Em

I lie awake, my eyes closed, feeling my scales warm by Sam's being leaning against me, I don't dare to move. The sun is setting now, casting an orange glow against the ever dense fog. Other than the sun, the plate is still ablaze with a bright white color, pulsing with every second. My middle aches, from both of us. We haven't had food for at least two days. Our energy is running low. How long do we wait here? My restlessness is starting to get to me, I tuck both my claws under my chest, willing to stay still. Just as I close my eyes, a quiet ringing, reverberates through the plain. It's from the plate. It's glowing different shades of black! If that's even possible that it can have a fierce glow of white around the edges as well? It's like nothing I've seen before. As it changes, a big pulse explodes outward, back followed by the mist clearing almost immediately. I look around at the new scenery, seeing the darkening sky makes my wings ache for flight. All of this happens while Sam's dreaming, which is quite funny, once she knows what she's missed. I smile at the thought, but it goes away almost as fast because the sound of multiple sets of wings getting close. For some reason, I immediately think the worst. To protect Sam, I move my shoulder quickly but enough not to wake her. I get up and stand over her, careful not to harm her, by stepping on her. I also try to hide her body with one of my legs which makes it look like I'm not protecting anything but myself. As the unknown dragons get closer, I can't hold back a growl, a rumble deep in my throat.  My chest warming from those eager flames. I close my eyes, to center myself. Blocking out all my worries and fears. I need to be on the offense. So I can protect Sam. The pulsing sound of wings beating the sky is getting louder with every thought I make. I open my eyes, to the one whom dare to come attack me now. But I can't stop staring at them in awe. Before me, three dragons land, all of them bigger than me. That makes me worried, and they are all wearing intricate armor. There are no signs of violent intentions from them but no matter what, I have to keep Sam safe.

The one in the middle takes a small step towards me, this male, he was a light grey color, a clear light blue, lighter than mine, but my scales are almost an identical grey to his. He has two straight short horns, with no spikes running down his back from what I can see. His armor is a glossy black, which covers the lower part of his throat and the rest of his chest. I assume he is the leader. Is he carrying something?

Welcome, Sister… It has been a long time. I am called Kiran. This- He nods his head toward the green and black dragons beside him- is Ryuu, and Ormr. We are here to escort you to the king.  I continue growling.  Sam chose that moment to stir, out of all the moments of my trying to hide her, she decides to move. The one who claims to be Kiran steps up closer than before, and I intensify my growling.

Is.. she you're bondee, Sister?? Kiran asked quietly, eyeing me carefully. I couldn't help it, I was frightened, more than frightened, I was terrified. Why was he calling me sister?

My name is Emberlynn! Don't you get close to her! I bark out a roar in a warning. I move my leg to block his view. I move forward to make sure he doesn't get near her at all. My wings widen instinctively to make myself look bigger, which was futile.  Kiran was obviously bigger than I am. He shakes his head slightly.

You misunderstand...Emberlynn. I'm not going to injure your bondee. I'm simply concerned, are you feeling fatigued at all? As he says this, a young girl slowly walks toward me and Sam with her hands up.  The air stirs, surrounding me with the smells of a forest, I can feel it leave me and glide towards Sam, simultaneously, her head facing Sam. I stop mesmerized by this girl, her eyes are a pale grey-blue, but they're unseeing. She's unable to see. I back up, not wanting to hurt this girl, as she walks towards my front leg. Sam still miraculously asleep, the girl picks her up with ease.

Karin, she is weak. I will care for her until she regains her strength. She looks at me,

I promise you that she will be cared for. I do not lie, I do not have ill intentions. Her voice sounds like it echoes off the stones near us. She opens her wings, ready for flight. Karin looks at me expectantly. For Sam's sake, I nod my head firmly, all at once everyone takes off into the sky, sadly I'm the last one to leave the ground. I gain speed to catch up beside the black dragon and Karin. The human girl flying above, with Sam in her arms. I'm feeling sleepy myself.

Karin… What is going on? Where are we going? I have no idea how to word my questions, they just came out of me without me saying so. I look towards our designated direction, the sun finally dipping behind the horizon to our back, the stars blinking awake in the sky.

We are going to the king. He's been expecting you for a while now. He strictly instructed us to escort you to him once you arrive. We are simply following his orders. His words are giving a sense of importance.

I don't understand, I say my thoughts aloud, what am I to any of you? I'm just a dragon. It also sounds like there's more of us, so what does a dragon, like me, have importance to the king of all dragons? I hear myself say this and instantly regret it. I was disrespectful. Wait. Why am I afraid I disrespected him when I don't even know him? Before he could answer,

Who are you to me? Who am I to you?... Looking at Karin, who is looking ahead. His next words will change my life forever.

You… are my sister. We are siblings, you're the firstborn. You are important to me because of that. You are important to the king because you are his daughter, as I am his son. This makes my heart stutter. I don't know how to accept this. I never knew my father. My mother told me that my father was dead. Is this who I actually am? Is this why my flame's a violet color? Claiming that I'm one of the highest ranks?

While I'm trying to understand the information I've been given, I mindlessly follow my escorts. Not noticing the girl taking Sam away. I felt as though I should've growled or tried to stay by her but I felt too fatigued, too overwhelmed with all that was happening. It was transpiring all too quickly, and I couldn't catch up, I was falling behind. I don't look around at my new surroundings, I just look at the empty space before me. Awaiting to see the king, my undead father…
