Chapter 32 - Ch.32: Proof

Em

My heart thunders loud in my chest. Kiran stands beside me, he senses my nerves.

Si- I mean Emberlynn, it is alright. He just wants to meet you. It's going to just be me, you and our father. No one else is going to be present. He seems so sure of himself. He leads me towards our father. Am I going to get punished at all? As I summon the thought, my reckless decision leads to me not keeping it to myself. For I hear my brother's laughter inside my mind.

You are not being punished. It isn't your fault that you have been taken from your home since you were little. Our mother is the one to blame. He merely wants to meet you, for he had met you only once during your lifetime.  What he says relieved me a bit, but what was said also grabbed my attention. As we arrive at a large crater made in the earth, flat and fractured. No one is present as I could see, but only one dragon, who stands at the very center of the crater. He does not see us but at first glance, I get the overwhelming feeling of familiarity. I look at Kiran for permission of a sort, he nods slightly.

I take a deep breath, step down and descend towards the king himself. Kiran follows me, silent and observing. Quietly, as I keep my eyes on the King, I speak with Karin,

Do we share the same mother?... How are you here and not me? I keep my claws retracted to not draw the attention of the king to me.

I was not yet hatched, she became sick of the traditions that have been here for thousands of years. But I will leave Father to discuss this with you.

As though he sensed that we mentioned him, the king looks at us both, first Kiran then me. If he's taken back, he does not show it. We get closer and I instinctively cower, and I stop a comfortable distance away. I'm hardly able to look at him but I do unwillingly.

He's my father… he won't harm me. I remind myself.

The King is… majestic but deadly. He's taller than me a bit, I have to look up at him. He's the color of the dark grey clouds at night. Surprisingly, his eyes are a sunset orange, tinged with a blood red. He has horns that curve twice upwards with ridges along with them. Unlike Mother, Father does not have the elongated spikes at the wings. The end of his tail has long spikes that can kill.

He steps close and observes me. I continue to look at his claws, making myself smaller to his large presence. I feel him press against my barriers, I blink, raising those barriers, and his presence becomes so overwhelming that I get dizzy but I stand my ground. My body continues to be tense until his voice invades my state of mind.

Draco… Who do you claim to be? His voice soothes me like the music I've heard in the humans' cities and towns. I don't meet his gaze, and I answer with the truth of all truths.

I do not know anymore… I used to know that I am a dragon named Emberlynn… Who has a mother that abandoned me when I was a Draco, I recently bonded with a human named Samantha. Now I'm claimed to be a sister and a daughter to royalty, to dragons I didn't know existed until the day before. So I do not know who I am anymore. All I know of what I am; a dragon.  I look at him in the eyes of the last part. Showing that I am certain about my claim. I feel as though I was rude and disrespectful so I brace for his harsh words and actions. I'm overwhelmed with what comes next.

You speak the truth. But let's prove it, shall we? Come, Karin… Emberlynn. He passes me and Karin and goes in a random direction, I follow last. Having no idea where we're headed.

Prove it? How will I do that?  I am naturally intimidated by his presence, but since Karin is between me and the king, I feel better. I just feel confused.  I hear the king's chuckles.

Oh, you will see in due time. You will have to defeat two enemies, then me… He looks back at me, a hint of a smile in his eyes.
