Chapter 14 - Better to bend than break

"...Fine, I'll tell you what happened." Gan Mei agreed. Taking in a deep breath she began. "It all started when Deng Zhao got involved with the underground."

"We grew up together and were like family when my mother died his family practically raised me. While he was never the brightest, he didn't seem like he would go down a dark path. But in college he started running around with the wrong crew.", continuing with a remorseful look Gan Mei spoke. "I tried to talk to him but he never listened, then he offended some powerful people. I had no way to help him so he went to Fu Zhihao, that monster, to find a solution."

"Who's Rui Xiang?", Tang Fei asked. Folding her hands and leaning closer to the shivering figure of Gan Mei she slowly dragged out another question. "Is he this so called backer?", with a slight smile Tang Fei rested her gaze upon the woman across from her as she leisurely leaned back.

"Yes.." Dejectedly answering Tang Fei's question Gan Mei looked down. "He promised he'd solve Deng Zhao's problems if we helped him cause damage to Leng Corps. I knew it was wrong, but I couldn't stand to watch him fall into ruin!" Gan Mei cried out. Slowly she broke down into short quiet cries before full out sobbing.

Handing her a tissue, which was quickly used, Tang Fei opened her mouth. "Have you ever considered that he chose to go down that path, that there was no way of salvation? ..It makes no sense to destroy your future for him, even if he's your sworn brother." Looking at the shocked Gan Mei she heavily spoke her next words.

"You can't change someone who doesn't want to be changed."

Hearing these words Gan Mei held her head in her hands. Inherently she knew that Tang Fei was right, but she simply couldn't immediately accept her faults. Slumping into the grey chair she continued to mournfully sob.

Watching her Tang Fei felt she was a bit pitiful. Gan Mei was truly a sorrowful figure for blindly trying to change someone with no intention to reform. Even almost ruining herself for the sake of them. 'Geez it seems all love can really make someone do crazy stuff'. Taking herself out of her thoughts she turned her attention to the woman in front of her who had finally stopped crying.

With red eyes Gan Mei faced Tang Fei. "Since you know that I had the intention to betray the company and withheld information how do you plan to deal with me?" She nervously shifted in her chair after asking the question.

"While you will still inevitably face punishment, if you cooperate with me on the case your contributions may help to lessen the severity of your punishment." Pushing out a contract Tang Fei handed Gan Mei a pen. "Do we have a deal?"

"Yes!" It's better to bend in the wind than to break in the storm*, after reading through the terms of the contract, and affirming that it is simply an agreement to ensure consequences if the information is incorrect Gan Mei signed her name. Pushing the contract back to Tang Fei she stood up and bowed in thanks before swiftly leaving out the door.

"Fuu", letting out a breath Tang Fei layer her head on the oak desk. "It takes energy to be intimidating." Sighing as she said this Tang Fei trudged over to the black couch before reaching to gather her stuff placed on the glass coffee table. "Well at least the boss will praise me for the information!" Thinking of this she energetically walked out of the office brimming with anticipation.
