Chapter 14 - Father Figure

Third Person's Point of View

"Miss Jones, Miss Dawn?" Sonia and Caroline diverted their gaze from whatever they are doing to look at the door of their classroom and seeing a college student assistant from the records sections scanning the classroom waiting for a response.

"Yes sir?" Sonia politely asked upon approaching the man with Caroline behind her following in suit.

"The records wants to talk to you." He look at the two giving a curt nod. "Now, if possible."

Sonia's brows furrowed in confusion immediately glancing at Caroline who was also looking at her mirroring the look on her face.

"What is going on?" Caroline quietly asked at the blonde haired girl beside her who was quietly following the man to the records office. Caroline's question caused her to turn and look at the girl beside her.

"I have a hunch." Sonia's response immediately perked Caroline's curiosity who scooted closer to the girl who continued to talk. "We have a certain something that we lack."

"There's a lot of things I lack Sonia." Caroline joked, but stopped when she saw Sonia giggling a bit then smiled at the girl gently.

"We both don't have a Middle initial."

Caroline stopped in her tracks eyeing the walking figure of Sonia who seemed to be undisturbed by the news. To Caroline though, she was also not bothered by the sudden realization but was surprised to two things. First, Sonia's observant skills and the shocking idea that Sonia is just like her, a someone that lacks something.

"Hello, good morning girls." The woman from the records section greeted the two girls that was scanning the room with an ocean of paper around and some cabinet behind a mahogany table at the center of the room with two brown couch facing each other lay still in front of the table and the same color couch behind the table. "Have a seat."

Sonia quietly complied with the woman who gestured the two chairs in front of her table, her gold eyes hidden by her small smile. Not a moment long, Caroline also did the same and sat quietly waiting for the woman to say anything.

"Well, the problem isn't really big its just something I have to confirm." The teacher started showing a list of all the girl's quizzes and other paperworks that has been sent to the records. "It seems as though you two did not fill up the middle initial part."

"Probably because we don't have one." Sonia's voice didn't hint any sense of sarcasm but the smile on her face immediately made Caroline almost smirked back with the same intensity. The teacher though, seemed to be unfazed by the sudden change of attitude coming from the girl thinking that she has quite a point as well.

"Well, the question here is that, where is your middle initial?" The teacher said in a calm manner emphasising each word of her question as if putting the two girls on a tight spot. But as Caroline's purple hues turn to gaze at her classmate, all tension she felt vanish upon seeing the girl's usual uncaring demeanour.

"Me and miss Dawn uses our mother's last name which is why we don't have a middle initial. Our family has come to the point of breaking down wherein us, by rights go to our mothers territory." Sonia explained her green eyes lacing with disinterest and irritation that it made Caroline say something else to keep the girl from saying anything more disrespectful to the teacher in front.

"Its my grandparents who are raising me from my mother's side which is why I use my mom's last name." She said with a smile causing the teacher to nod in understanding.

"Well, its not a big of a deal. All is settled we were just confirming. Thank you girls for your time." The two didn't say anything else waving a small goodbye to the said lady and immediately leaving the room.

The walk back to the classroom was quiet that the only thing can be heard was the clicking of Caroline's shoes who notices her companions quiet steps, she was about to say something but was beaten to it by Sonia.

"My father didn't really accept my mom when she got pregnant at such a young age." Caroline stopped in her tracks eyes wide. "So she raised me all on her own. And I have never met my real father, not once."

Sonia looked back to the frozen girl a small smile crept up to her face. Her actions create a sense of warmth to seep through the girl that made Caroline walk towards her.

"My father was a cheating man, and when I was born he was looking forward of having a male son like my brother. But to his disappointment I was a girl." Sonia didn't say anything and listen the sound of Caroline's heels on the floor clicking as they walk and talk at the same time. "So growing up, I never had any experience of being loved by him. And eventually there came a time where he visited to my school. And I was overjoyed thinking he was to visit me, but to my dismay he came for his other daughter."

Caroline once again stopped in her tracks, feeling her shoulders shake as the memory flashed back to her like a paint dropped to a clear water.

"Caroline, isn't that your father?" A student stated looking at the young Caroline who immediately and giddily scurried over to the door to look at her approaching father holding a large human size teddy bear.

"Dadd---" The girl's enthusiasm died down when another girl ran towards her father tackling the man into a tight hug. The man chuckled in glee carrying the girl spinning her around and giving her the toy in hand.

Caroline's train of thoughts though came to a halt when she felt a soft fabric gently caressing her face. Looking to her right she saw Sonia's small hands holding a white handkerchief, a gentle smile playing on the girl's lips.

"Its okay to cry." The girl stated.

"You're not crying yourself." Caroline retorted gently taking hold of the handkerchief on Sonia's hand to gently dab on her tearful eyes careful of spoiling her make up.

"I don't see the need to cry. It's not an important matter to me anymore." Sonia replied looking out the window  of the school where the gym is at. "He wasn't there when I need him, why should he be the reason for the tears I only use for special occasions?"

Her response create a chuckle to escape from Caroline to which Sonia smiled of.

"Let's go back to the classroom. It will be bad if the teacher had a quiz." The two walk back to their classroom in silence not bothering to say anything to each other anymore but wasn't bothered by the silence surrounding them. The two of them stop in front of the door to which lead to the surprisingly quiet class.

"Oh by the way." Caroline look at Sonia who was holding the knob of the door but was looking at her. "I guess we both are lacking not just the middle initials then."

Sonia giggled  before gently opening the door in silence and getting inside greeting the teacher in process.

"At least, I'm not alone on this one." Caroline stated to herself following Sonia who have heard her self assurance with a smile on her face.
