I made it to the grand ole corporate monster of my second job, at least its representative anyway, the one of many heads to this particular hydra, and clocked in with the embedded barcode in my wrist. Just a swipe across the laser bar code scanner. There was a beep before the display on the touch screen monitor changed to reveal my employee profile. I sighed in resignation at the spotty record that collected every misstep that ever took in my life, including stuff from grade school. There was a little button at the bottom of the screen that was asking, basically, for confirmation of my identity so I touched it. Another beep. Then, off to my duties as an esteemed employee of the monstrous corporate hydra of Wallmark.
The rest of the day wasn't so bad. Got reprimanded for some petty shit, but that was nothing new. Got caught by the electric eye of some automated trashcan daydreaming. Guess I gotta work on looking busy, huh?
Finally made it home to the small house in the country that I shared with my mom and brother. Which is sad, I know, but what are you gonna do? I couldn't afford rent in town on my pay, or much less loan payments; not with my record anyways.
I ate some diner, got a shower, and performed some hygienic care. After that it was time for bed. Had to get up pretty early to go to my other daytime job (streets only need sweeping once or twice a week) at a chicken farm to pick up eggs until about 4 in the evening. And then it was back to Wallmark. Lucky me.
I undressed. Took a sleeping pill. Went to lay down thinking about the strange woman from this morning.
She had been wearing a loose fitting sweater, gray in color. Like I said before she was pretty pissed and in addition to that she was gesturing a lot and well, I hadn't noticed at the time but I could swear that, it was impossible, when the loose sleeve of her sweater slid back from her wrist there was no barcode.
