Chapter 41 - Shooting Stars

"Oh come the hell on", RJ complained as the sickle came spinning towards him.

"Worry not minn venn", Tatterhood said as she stepped in the pathway between RJ and the sickle, "I'll shoot it down".

As she made this declaration, Tatterhood held her spoon in one hand aloft like a bow and pulled her other hand back like she was notching an arrow.

"Shoot it down? How are you gonna shoot that thing down with a spoon?!", Senior Hippie asked, wide-eyed and confused.

The moment he asked this question, an aura of profoundness began to emanate from Tatterhood.

"A spoon you say? Nei! Can't you see I'm holding the bow and arrow of the great Arash, the hero of Iran whose arrow once chased the sun from dawn till dusk"?

As she finished her statement, her spoon began to curve and morph into an ornate curved bow made in the Persian style. Meanwhile, a golden arrow with the facade of a star manifested out of nowhere in her other hand.

"What exactly are the limits to your spoon?", RJ asked stupefied by the sudden change. RJ had assumed that the spoon was limited to pole weapons, a conclusion he came to after watching her fight the last few times and when training. Turns out he was wrong.

"Yes", Tatterhood answered as she notched the golden arrow into the bow. As she held the arrow taut in the bow string, mana quickly began to condense at the arrowhead until it began to literally glow with power.

Once Tatterhood managed to get a bead on the spinning sickle, she released a glowing arrow that flew like a shooting star towards the encroaching blade.

The arrow flew fast and true, shrieking like a missile intended to blow it's target to smithereens. RJ and Senior Hippie could barely keep their eyes on the arrow as it was too fast for them.

However, the sickle weasel could see it coming.

Just as the arrow was about to make impact, the sickle had suddenly rotated just enough to narrowly avoid the arrow while maintaining it's slicing momentum forward.

It was, however, now flying towards Tatterhood. While this normally cause most people to try and dodge it, Tatterhood just stood there with a slightly crazy look on her face.

Even though RJ knew Tatterhood could probably handle it, something compelled him to call out regardless.

"Tatterhood!", RJ called out, "Get out of the way! How are you going to block that thing with just your rags"?!

"You're right. My rags can't block it, but I don't plan to", Tatterhood answered with a confident smile, "For you see min venn, I'm wearing the robes of Atlante the Argonaut, the greatest hunteress in all of Greece".

At this declaration, he tattered dress and hood began to change into a set of leather hunting clothes, embossed with the images of a mother bear and a giant boar.

"Those who wear her garments, are said to be blessed with her agility", Tatterhood declared as she took a stance.

The sickle was poised to slice her in two, but Tatterhood leaped into the air with the grace and agility of a hunting cat. As she did, she notched another golden arrow that manifested out of the aether.

"What in the hell kinda storied are ya?!", the voice of the grizzled veteran called out as Tatterhood dodged the cyclonic blade.

"Where did that come from?", Senior Hippie asked RJ as they were now standing in confusion. To which, RJ just shrugged in response.

"Moi? I am the one and only Tatterhood", she declared as she did a midair somersault to reposition her shot, "And I'm the greatest hunter under heaven, whose arrows never miss their mark"!

Tatterhood released another arrow, blindly into the dense trees, only for it to suddenly curve and zig zag about.

"Got you sucker".

"Tatterhood?", Donnie asked himself as he tried to rack his brain for an answer. It sounded familiar to him, but he couldn't pin it.

Unfortunately, he wouldn't have time to think about it for long.

A golden arrow of light began to maneuver through the trees and fly directly towards Donnie's position.

The veteran had made use of some unknown skills to blend in and hide with the surrounding foliage, giving him a safe haven to manipulate his deadly dowsing kusarigama from, or so he thought.

A feeling of dread came over him as he saw the flying arrow coming straight towards him. His instincts as a veteran told him that if he let that hit him, he'd be pushing daises at worst or eating hospital pudding for months at best.

Mustering his survival instincts, Donnie leaped from his hiding place and began to use his elongated dowsing to chain to latch himself to another tree and yanked himself away from the spot.

(Un)expectedly, the arrow didn't make impact with his original hiding spot, but suddenly turn and come flying towards him again.

"Of course it's a tracking spell", Donnie muttered to himself, "I'm too old to avoid this thing forever, so I gotta block it"!

Donnie yanked the dowsing chain and turned to face the incoming arrow. Once he was in place, he produced a contract card out of a thin.

"Come on out Tony! I need a ten ton block"!

"Sure thing Donnie!", an energetic voice called out from the card.

Donnie shattered the contract card with his hand into a burst of lightly colored crystals. After a moment of falling, the crystals began to condense above him until it transformed into a tanuki spirit.

Donnie quickly pulled on his dowsing chain until he managed to get the counterweight into his hands. Like he did with the sickle, Donnie tossed the counterweight upward to make contact with the tanuki.

The tanuki spirit then possessed the weight, transforming it into a large iron ball that looked like a tanuki daruma.

Iron daruma in hand, Donnie swung it towards the incoming arrow, shattering into pieces.

"Hah! Got it!", Donnie exclaimed in victory.

"Nope", a strange feminine voice said in response.

The familiar feeling of dread crawled up Donnie's back, as he turned to face the source of the voice.

Staring him down like he was a fish in a barrel, was a huntress with sharp eyes notching a golden arrow at him.

"I got you", she said before releasing a golden arrow directly at him.
