Chapter 45 - Summer of Love

After making that rather ominous statement, Donnie proceeded to grab the water pipe and take a huge hit.

...

For a really long time.

...

An uncomfortably long time.

"How...how long has he been huffing that pipe?", RJ asked a tad concerned.

"About...ten minutes", Tatterhood replied after staring at a hanging wall clock in the shape of a peace sign for a bit.

"Ay dios mio", Senior Hippie said while making a sign of the cross, "Are y'all sure I'm the only one with no lungs"?

"Waitaminute, he's stopping".

Donnie eventually stopped inhaling from the pipe and moved it away from his face, which was now a weird shade of purple, red and blue. If it wasn't for the his hypnotically rainbow eyes, the group would've assumed he had suffocated. That being said, RJ was a bit uncomfortable about the whole situation.

"Are we sure he's-"

*HACK*!

Donnie released a powerful cough followed by a huge cloud of purple-ish smoke that engulfed the whole. Needless to say, the smoke had a rather...dank smell to it.

"Ack, that's nasty!", RJ proclaimed as he tried to wave away the smoke in his face, "and why is Jefferson Airplane playing right now"?

"Them", Tatterhood said as she pointed towards a corner in the living room.

Off in that corner, Tony and Kathy had set up Donnie's record player to play "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. As to why they did so, RJ couldn't really think about that right now because he was starting to see everything in psychedelic colors.

"Oh...shit...", RJ said in slow motion, or so he thought.

"Ha...ha...looks... like... we're going...on...a ride...", Tatterhood said with a laugh as she leaned back into the recliner, practically melting into it.

Senior Hippie for his part just looked very very spaced out, but he did manage to utter a sentence.

"Hey...do y'all...see a vortex?", he said while pointing in front of him.

"Vor...tex?", RJ asked as he turned towards the direction of the pointed finger.

He did in fact see a purple swirling vortex that radiated flower power.

"Oh...that...vortex...".

"Get...ready...friends...", Donnie began to say, "We're...headed...to...the Summer of Love~".

"Right on...", Tatterhood said in a pleased tone.

The four of them soon began to float off of their respective seats and into the vortex. It a was surprisingly chill experience for them as they began to swirl deeper and deeper into a spinning maelstrom of peace, love and drugs. And then...they poofed.

"Bwaaaaaahhhhh, oof!", RJ went as he suddenly fell from the sky onto a grassy park field.

"Huh... I thought that would hurt more", RJ said as he sat himself up.

Behind him, Tatterhood and Senior Hippie floated down to where he was, well Tatterhood anyways. Senior Hippie also fell to the ground like an anvil, with his head rolling away as well.

"Puta Madre...", Senior Hippie muttered as he tried to reorientate himself, "Where the hell-"

"Senior Hippie, look out!", RJ suddenly shouted.

"What? Ay"!

Before Senior Hippie could process anything RJ had said, a young man looking like a knock-off Beatle suddenly drove a bike over him, passing right through his skull.

Evidently, Tatterhood noticed this and proceeded to stick her hand right through a girl that was just dancing to some of the ambient music.

"Ooh, spooky".

"Ack, I am never gonna be able to get over that", Senior Hippie complained as he popped his skull back into place, "where are we anyways"?

"I think the better question is when", RJ added.

The trio looked around them to see that they were situated in what appeared to be a large park filled with hippies as far as the eye could see.

There were hippies with long hair, hippies in questionably colorful dresses, hippies with no hair, praying hippies, drunk hippies, hippies on enough substances to cause an elephant to trip balls and hippies making out with more than one partner. And to punctuate it all was an ambience of music coming from a band on a giant concert stage, and a bunch of hippies with folk instruments.

"Wait a minute", RJ told the group as he walked over to a possibly the only non-hippie in the park reading a newspaper.

Knowing full well he wouldn't be able to talk to the guy, RJ proceeded to check the date on the newspaper's front page.

June 20th, 1967.

"Oh shit", RJ said aloud for Tatterhood and Senior Hippie to hear, "were at the start of the Summer of Love".

"Groovy, baby", Tatterhood said while shimmying her shoulders, "I guess that means our host is gonna have a hell of a time".

"Host? Oh yeah, Donnie! Where'd he go?", Senior Hippie asked. A literal second later, a rickshaw pulled by a middle-aged Vietnamese man stopped where the trio was standing.

"Here we are boss, Golden Gate Park", the man said as he placed the rickshaw's bar down on the ground. The Vietnamese man proceeded to walk to the side and pull down the rickshaw's cover, revealing the occupant to the trio.

The occupant was a man that appeared to be in his early 30s, granted by the way he carried himself seem to belay he was much older than that, at least on the inside. The fact that he was wearing a black tank top, an unbuttoned army jacket, camo pants and heavy boots, confirmed to any on-lookers that this man was a veteran, one that seemed to have gone through too much in too little time.

However, the man was still surprisingly good-looking, at least by 1960s standards.

"Thanks for the ride man", the veteran said in a deep, relaxed tone, "keep the change". The veteran proceeded to flipped a gold five dollar coin towards the rickshaw puller, who caught it with ease.

Pleased with payment, the Asian man nodded in thanks and proceeded to make his way out of the park.

"So is it safe to assume that he's-"

"Donnie!", a perky feminine voice called out, interrupting RJ's question.

"-and doubts are gone".

"Damn, he was surprisingly good looking", Tatterhood commented, "you'd think you'd remember a mug like his if you two had met, right Senior Hippie"?

But Senior Hippie wasn't paying attention to Tatterhood's teasing. For something much more interesting had caught his eye.

It was a beautiful Japanese girl with soft brown almond eyes and black flowing hair.

In other words, it was Reya.
