Weeks had passed after the medical incident and the renown cancer surgeon's career ended at the early age of 25.
Katherine leaned back in her medicine bed while staring at the tv filled with doctors criticizing what she did in the surgery room.
Despite watching people belittle her work and act like she contributed nothing, Katherine didn't show any anger. Calmly she flicked off the tv and curled up to stare out the hospital window.
While compared to normal standards, her work reformed the entire medical industry, compared to her own standards she could agree with the doctors on the television.
She really didn't do anything.
Twelve generations of her family lived and died as doctor's in order to stop a tumor that grew inside of every child born in their family.
From a young age the tumor was closely attached to their brain and no doctor's were willing to attempt to remove it. This led to multiple members of their family continuing to become doctor's so that they could continue their line.
From their hard word and the increase of technology, the families life span went from dying at 24 to dying around 30.
But despite the centuries of work, after last month, she was the last one left. Also, unlike all the those who came before her, she wasn't motivated to keep continuing her family line.
What did it matter? Another child would have to suffer pains their entire life only to die in their late 20's or early 30's if they were lucky.
Was that really something to force on a child?
No. It was best that their miserable existence ended here. She wasn't interested in continuing their curse.
Katherine shut her eyes, if only this entire process could just hurry up. Her entire life she lived for medicine and after she gave that up, she didn't have much else to live for.
She was just tired. But, thinking about h Tyrone terrible scene in her aunt's brain growing in her own, she wasn't able to go to sleep.
Her eyes reopened showing annoyance and she carefully navigated the tubes in her body to flip on her stomach.
Looking for a distraction, she started to scroll through her phone for anything to occupy her time.
Her eyes were dead as she looked at the various games on her screen. Honestly, she couldn't remember the last time she ever played a game, or if she ever even played one. Her entire life was devoted to medicine to the point she lost sight of anything else.
Katherine carelessly downloaded a random game out of boredom. She didn't get the point of any of the games so might as well leave it up to fate! She patiently waited for the game to download.
The game she downloaded had a classic set up of a virtual reality phone game. You were given a set plot of land and a person to look after. Using the person's skills and recruiting more people you grew the land until it was flourishing.
But unlike normal games the theme was set in a vampire kingdom and the name of the game app was 'disabled trash please live well!'
Katherine let out a sigh, she could really relate to that name.
Dark thoughts poked at the corners of her mind, however Katherine strained her eyes to ignore them and focus on the game.
A text jumped up on the screen, [Welcome to the kingdom of Black Rose young traveler!]
A palace made of black stone showed up behind the text and a dark red moon shined above the kingdom making it very fitting of its name black rose. A couple of bats circled around the castle in routine.
Next, another text came up on the screen [Please chose your difficulty! 'Very Easy' 'Easy' 'Normal'
'Hard' 'Expert' 'Extreme' 'Hell Mode' ]
This question didn't even pause Katherine as she unhesitatingly picked Hell Mode. The more difficult something was the more fun it was. After all, what accomplishments could someone feel from finishing something easy?
Another pop up appeared. [ Are you sure that you would like to enter hell mode?]
Katherine picked yes, This mother wasn't a pussy ok!
The screen went dark before it flashed to a practically empty room. In the year 2020 the phone game graphics were pretty updated to the point that she could even see shadows in the room.
Katherine observed the black stone room and looked at the pathetic looking bed placed against the corner of the room. The only reason she could see anything in the room was because of the window, which was covered with a red kind of plaster.
Was the character she was starting out with a prisoner?
Also after reading the description, wasn't this a game where you used materials to grow your wealth. How was she going to discover any materials in an empty room?
A notification showed up, [ To get the best experience please wear headphones.]
Katherine reached into her bag to grab some headphones and haphazardly put over her curly black hair that was already in disarray.
She then started to investigate the room and discover the controls. Apparently hard mode didn't have a tutorial.
Using her fingers she poked at the empty room and tried to figure out what she could move. Finally the blanket moved slightly when she pinched it. Noticing this she pinched it harder and dragged it off the bed.
The smoothness of the action caused Katherine's eyebrows to jump up what a realistic game! Even the wrinkles in the cover looked like how they would if a blanket was picked up off a bed in real life.
Was the game really a kingdom game and not a satisfaction one? The bored doctor started to take the cover and toss it around randomly just to watch its wrinkles change shape.
What insane programming!
