Dark and scary.
Those words described the h*ll Sharmaine went through when she finally opened her eyes for the first time in six months. She's clueless as to where she was—neither in a hospital nor her home. All she saw was a room filled with machines, and tubes stuck in her body. Confusion suddenly struck her when a woman, tall and slender in figure dressed in black, entered the room.
"Miss Sharmaine, I am glad to see you well," she said.
In Sharmaine's mind, she constantly thought of this woman. Who was she? Why was she here? Was she a nurse? There were no words forming in her mouth. She just stared at the woman, trying to watch her as close as possible. The woman paced the room, ending up beside Sharmaine.
"You must be confused. I apologize, but I cannot answer your questions at the moment," she said as her hollow eyes were locked to hers.
Sharmaine nodded and sighed to calm her beating heart. She glanced briefly at the woman, and tried to formulate words.
"W-What," she murmured, which caught the attention of the woman, "What is… your name?"
The woman smiled gently and giggled. "Pardon me, where are my manners? My name is Merry Ede. I will be in your care starting today."
Merry bowed slightly and gave Sharmaine a comforting look. After that, a knock interrupted the silence, and entered a woman who looked too young to be considered in her mid-forties; a woman who wore a fashionable and extravagant clothing that posed gracefulness and power through-out the room.
"Thank goodness, you're awake," she said.
Sharmaine stared in utter perplexity. It just struck her that she did not know these people who entered this unknown place. It was inevitable. Her mouth remained frozen as the elegant woman explained everything that had happened. She was unbelievably asleep for six months—to be specific, in a comma—because of a car accident that cost the life of her unborn child.
"Unborn child?"
Both women stared at Sharmaine when she muttered those words. Could it be that she doesn't remember everything? The woman rushed up to Sharmaine and held her hand.
"Do you know who you are?"
Sharmaine blinked. "I'm Sharmaine, right?"
"Do you remember anything else?"
Sharmaine's eyes shifted to Merry and then to the woman. "I remember doing a lot of things… ah, I also remember meeting someone very dear to me."
'Very dear'.
The truth was, Sharmaine did not know anything at all. This talk about an unborn child and a b*stard did make sense in a conventional way though it was unclear why it was said that she disguised as a man to enter some big company. Eventually, the woman left, leaving Merry and Sharmaine behind.
"Are you really okay, miss?" Merry asked,
Sharmaine gave her a warm smile. "I'm fine Merry, thank you"
As time passed, part of Sharmaine's memories came back, but not enough to put her confusing puzzle pieces together. She remembered talking to a man and a woman, whose faces she couldn't recall, about some meeting place at some hotel. Her head throbbed
"Miss—" Merry stuttered, worried about Sharmaine.
"I'm perfectly alright, don't sweat it too much."
"B-But…"
Sharmaine gave an assuring smile that calmed the nervous lady. She giggled, and replied, "Oh, Merry, I was just dizzy. Maybe I am just hungry?"
Merry paused for a minute before informing Sharmaine that she'll go out buy food. Sharmaine nodded, and waved Merry goodbye. The door clicked, and before Sharmaine knew, she was already staring into oblivion. She glanced at the machine beside her and followed the flow to the tube, which was connected to her hand.
"What a pain."
