Chapter 6 - A Day Filled with Responsibilities

Sharmaine woke up early feeling a bit drowsy since she only had four hours of sleep.

"I wonder if I'll be able to focus on today's work," she murmured as she stood up and made her bed. She saw Denzel sleeping soundly on his bed.

"How cute," she muttered, realizing what she had just said, she painted a flustered look on her face. Upon covering her face, she suddenly realized that she had no uniform for work today.

Sharmaine had to excuse her rudeness because she needed a suit for work; Denzel was the only person who has a lot of it. Her belongings were still at Q city since she wasn't informed that she would be living with the boss prior to her first day of work. She took a quick shower, and got dressed in her new normal attire—a suit on top of bandages.

"Wow, I look so manly," she said looking at the mirror. After primping herself, including her hair, she slowly crept out of the room.

"Shawn," a voice called which startled Sharmaine.

She turned around and saw Denzel sitting up. She had nothing to say, an awkward silence filled the room until Denzel spoke.

"Good luck today," he said in a monotonous way.

"Thank you, also, I'll cook you something so just reheat it if you ever get hungry,"

He nodded; Sharmaine went out and paced the halls, thinking that it must be quite lonely being inside this mansion. She wondered if Denzel had a family—a family that would take care of him whenever he is sick; a family that would welcome him home and a family that he would bid 'goodbye' to when he leaves for work. The more Sharmaine thought, the more she could relate.

From a very young age, she lost her parents in a tragic car accident. Her other relatives were nowhere to be found so she was adopted by some nasty people that turned her into a servant. Eventually, those nasty people died when she was 18. With no children to pass their ill-gotten wealth, she used the money to buy a house in Q city where she could live for the rest of her life.

After making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen space, she headed out, stunned by the car parked in front of her.

"Why are you here?" she asked.

"Mr. Suarez ordered me to pick you up."

Sharmaine sighed. "It's fine, you don't have to."

"You should go inside. Boss will be mad if I don't do my job."

"Okay." She really had no choice, plus, it was a better idea than taking the subway. When they arrived at the company, she thanked the driver for his service and entered the building. Many employees, who had business with Denzel, asked where he was, but then got disappointed upon the information that he was absent.

"He went down with a fever, so I'm going to take over until he comes back," she said, "It won't be for too long." Some employees believed her words, others didn't and some were confused. Sharmaine went to their office to check Denzel's schedule for the day. It was all messy and not so understandable.

"An 8 AM meeting? Well, I better inform them that Denzel isn't here," she muttered. Since there was an hour before 8 AM, she decided to fix Denzel's schedule. It was, however, quite a challenge since his schedules were jam-packed and unorganized.

Thankfully, she managed to finish it just on time for the supposed 8 AM meeting. She paced the halls yet again to the meeting room, which she found by asking a few workers she bumped into.

"Good morning, I am Shawn Mendoza, Mr. Suarez's new assistant," she said, "I am so sorry to tell you that Mr. Suarez is sick and cannot come to this meeting, If you would like to pass a message to him, please inform it to me."

One gave out a disappointing sigh. "When will he be present?"

"I am not so sure, maybe the day after tomorrow?"

"Very well then, we shall postpone the meeting for now, thank you Mr. Mendoza for telling us and not wasting our time," said the vice president.

Sharmaine could tell in their eyes their disappointment and frustration on Denzel's absence.

"So, it's a thing if Denzel gets sick," she murmured. The people gradually left the meeting room, leaving Sharmaine to close the doors. She had a few last things to do before she could relax herself—most were simple and some needed effort. The day passed by in just a few minutes for Sharmaine as she typed the last few sentences for her report, as soon as she hit the save button, she stretched her arms high in the air.

She felt extremely exhausted running errands. It suddenly struck her why Denzel wanted to go to work—because everyone would depend on the president, Despite of his bitter attitude, she found it quite lonely at times without his presence especially in the office whenever she writes or organizes something related to the company. She sighed as she closed her laptop, she looked up in the ceiling, a few words escaped her mouth.

"I hope you get well soon, Denzel."
