"Here ya go kid. One pack of cig's."
"Thanks jake sorry for always troubling you."
"It's fine little man just make sure to come back safe okay."
"Of course. Alright see ya later man"
I grabbed a small bag from the hands of a familiar clerk making my out of the store as soon as I made sure I got the right thing.
"I wonder what'll happen today...Fuck I could really use a break."
I began to walk through the damp streets, the street lamps lighting the way making it easier to dodge big deep puddles as well as making small fun puddles clear as day. I began to hum some tunes as I made my way home starting off with Ray Charles hit the road jack and moving onto sing sing sing by Lenny Goodman.
I managed to hum both songs and a little bit of new york new york by Frank Sinatra on my walk home but unfortunately I had to stop as after so many steps it was about time I made it to my home.
"...Alright well I won't be able to hum anything for a while."
I slowly began my walk to the front door staring downwards at the cement the makes up the front of my home.
A couple of slow steps later I made it to the gate of hell.
I didn't even bother knocking I just walked right in.
"I'M HOME"
"SHUT UP AND BRING ME MY SMOKES!"
Hearing her voice I instantly felt an intense wave of anxiety.
"Okay"
She sounds drunk...It's fine i'm used to this it's just another day.
I made my way to the living room.
"Go go hurry up."
I speed up my steps stopping at the side of the fuzzy recliner my mom rested on and slowly pass the bag with the cigarettes in it to her hoping I don't piss her off.
"...Take the cigarettes out of the bag BEFORE you pass them to me idiot."
She smacked my hand hard with the bottle of beer resting on her stomach thankfully I didn't drop the bag as I'm sure that would have pissed her off more.
"Chop chop idiot."
I grabbed the pack of cigarettes from the bag and placed it in her open hand.
"Good now go away mama wants to rest for a bit."
I waited for a couple seconds making sure that was the best choice making my way to my room after I was sure.
I walked through the small hallway shuffling my feet across the rug covered floor grabbing my hand as there was a bright bruise and a small cut on its top.
I decided to rinse my hand first so I made a small stop to the bathroom. As soon as I made it I turned the hot water knob slightly after closing the door as I don't want her to hear me.
I looked at the small mirror in front of me focusing on my pale tired looking face for some reason.
...It's fine soon enough she'll fall asleep. When she does I can have some fun.
After a couple painful seconds of rinsing I decided to stop and just go to my room.
I opened the bathroom door and peeked out the sides of the door making sure she wasn't close but then again if she was close i'd still end up pulling bits of glass out of me.
I went to my room closing the door as soon as I stepped inside.
I began to examine my room looking at what little I had in here.
I saw the damaged bed I always sleep on with a clean looking thick brown blanket and a large window right above it all, everything relaxing on the wall across from the door. I saw the small closet with a mix of dress clothes and casual clothes with a floor layered in shoes. I saw everything she had bought to make us look normal...It's fine for now i'll just read some vinland saga for a bit at least until the alcohol kicks in.
I layed down on my bed, pulled my phone out of my pocket, and began reading some manga.
After ten chapters I heard loud snoring.
I stepped out of my room and looked into the living room making sure she was asleep.
There she was her right arm hanging loosely on the side of the recliner her hand tightly gripping an empty beer the t.v. shining brightly a few steps in front of her. The light on the center of the roof barely illuminating the room.
I went back to my room and moved my mattress off it's support and grabbed a midsize case from under it. After grabbing the case I put the bed back in it's place making sure to put the large brown blanket on it.
I opened the window and climbed out holding the case's handle tight.
With my work clothes on I began to run down the street making my way to the tracks right next to the nearby school not slowing down or loosening my grip even after fifteen minutes of running.
As soon as I made it to the tracks I began to walk down the sides of it for another ten minutes.
I took a seat on the rails and caught my breath for a minute looking at the large amount of space on both sides of the tracks. I wonder why so much was cleared out when the tracks are so small.
After catching my breath I out the case on my knees, opened it, and put together what was inside it.
In my hands is a shiny copper colored saxophone my hope and my method of relaxation. It took months of saving and years of dedication...actually no I just always needed to use it.
I placed the reed on the mouth piece and began my fun and decided to play what I didn't get to finish humming I went ahead and played my own little version of new york new york.
Moving from fast to slow in a swing as well as mixing quite moments with loud. I'm sure it wasn't the best sounding but in this moment I felt I had to go crazy. Hell no one's around to hear me why not sing I don't care that I have such a deep ugly voice.
And so I did my own little rendition of new york new york not caring how I sounded hell I even made sure to sing as loud as possible. It felt so good I just had to do a little jig.
With sweat dripping down my face and my lungs slowly shrinking with every breath I took I felt more and more alive. I don't know when but I decided to truly just go wild I'll play what I want as I want. Soon enough my glasses flew off my face but I don't care cause me and my brass baby are singing together tonight and nothing is stopping me.
After my little solo performance I was completely out of breath and but I figured I might as well give it another go after taking a small break of course after grabbing my glasses off the ground and slamming them back on
Suddenly I heard clapping and whistling
"That was awesome. I mean it was a mess but with your voice and the little jig you were doing that was the funnest thing ever I mean seriously you sounded awesome! Though it would've been better if ya didn't switch so much."
