If it had not been because of that small expression, Gu Chen would have thought that Mother Jian suddenly wanted to be nice to Jian Sangyu because she made her proud.
Jian Sangyu was different now. She was no longer the quiet and docile puppet who had no opinions of her own. Every small expression of hers on her face today made Gu Chen feel that she suddenly was like a stranger. But Gu Chen, for some reason, thought that Jian Sangyu was also showing the true side of her by acting in this way.
Mother Jian took Jian Sangyu into the bedroom. Jian Sangyu had emptied most of the things in the bedroom when she got married, and the things that were left in the room were nothing other than the prizes she had won and the cosmetics and perfume she no longer needed.
No pyjamas were left in the walk-in wardrobe.
She had never stayed overnight at this house after she was married.
"Mom, what do you want to say to me?" Jian Sangyu looked into the distance outside the window as she was sitting on the bed. She did not bother to take a look at Jian Jiayue who was apparently showing a proud expression.
"Sangyu, I would like you to give back the shares of the company I gave to you. What you need to do is to sign the contract." Mother Jian said to Jian Sangyu in a very natural way as if she didn't care how Jian Sangyu would feel when asked to give back what she had been given.
She stretched out her hands to take out the contract in the drawer. Mother Jian continued to persuade her, thinking that she might turn the suggestion down.
"Sangyu, Jiayue has nothing. She has been suffering a great deal outside the family and she went through such bitter days that we couldn't imagine. I want to make it up to her with whatever I have. These shares should not have been yours anyway."
Although she had heard the same line before and although she had been hurt once, Jian Sangyu, who had thought that she could be invulnerable, still felt that what her mother said was like a sharp blade stirring up her heart.
As the agony pierced through her heart, Jian Sangyu turned her face around and pressed down all the emotion that might appear on her face.
She spoke in a slow motion, snorted and said, "Okay, I will sign the papers."
Jian Sangyu wrote her name on the contract one stroke after another. It was the present Mother Jian gave to her at her fourteenth birthday.
At that time, Mother Jian said that she expected her to grow up as a rich girl who could live the life she enjoyed living and that she was her favorite daughter.
But now, the mother who had once given her a blessing was trying to get everything back from her.
She should not have received these shares. So shouldn't she just return all of them?
"Mom, dad has given her shares too, so have my grandparents!" Jian Jiayue reminded her mother with a whisper.
Jian Sangyu tossed the pen on the table softly, looked up at Jian Jiayue with coldness and said, "Jian Jiayue, I don't blame you for being uneducated. But you must have learnt a word - enough."
