Jian Sangyu threw a look at Gu Chen who was driving and then she noticed his hands upon the steering wheel.
When the earthquake happened, he kept her protected beneath him with this pair of hands so that he bore the danger alone. When danger fell down, he chose not to leave her alone, but to stay by her side.
"Gu Chen, you are very kind."
Jian Sangyu had always known that Gu Chen was a man of kindness. He might not have been a good husband, yet he had not been a bad one either. He didn't offer her love, yet he did offer her protection.
Gu Chen was someone who didn't know how to love others. So Jian Sangyu knew clearly that if what she needed was a steady home, marrying Gu Chen would be her best choice.
Gu Chen snorted facing Jian Sangyu's compliment.
"But those belonged to mother, and if she wants them back to give them to Jian Jiayue, what right do I have to keep them to myself?" Jian Sangyu sneered self-mockingly. "Since mother asks for them, I should give them back to her."
"Even those from your father and your grandparents?" Gu Chen snorted. "Jian Sangyu, do you really think that those shares are from them?"
Gu Chen sneered. "What would the Jian Family be without the Gu Family?"
The Jian Family married Jian Sangyu to him because they wanted to have the money and support from the Gu Family. The Jian Family's company had met a downfall a few years ago and was on the edge of bankruptcy. But after Jian Sangyu married the Gu Family, the Jian Family received the money and contacts from the Gu Family so that they pulled through.
Gu Chen didn't care much about the Joan Family, but did he know that they had proposed to make Jian Jiayue marry him instead of Jian Sangyu, because Jian Jiayue was the real daughter of the Jian Family. They had thought that only by making Jian Jiayue cling to the Gu Family would everything be guaranteed for the Jian Family.
If Gu Chen's grandfather had not turned the suggestion down, Jian Sangyu would still be living with her parents in an awkward position till this present day.
The Jian Family married off their daughter, only because they wanted to have the Gu Family's support.
Father Jian gave Jian Sangyu the shares on her wedding day, just to put on a show for the Gu Family.
Seeing Jian Sangyu throwing a side look at him, Gu Chen drummed the steering wheel with his index finger, re-arranged his language and spoke again, "I told you those things, not because I want to defile you as a man from the Gu Family. What I meant was that although you grew up in the Jian Family, you owe them nothing. You didn't set the fire at the factory years back and you did not cause Jian Jiayue's misery. You owe Jian Jiayue nothing either."
One sentence Gu Chen did not say was that Jian Sangyu had already paid the Jian Family off for bringing her up when she got married.
But that would be ruthless words that should not be said by Jian Sangyu, but by an outsider like Gu Chen.
Gu Chen lowered his eyes. "You don't have to tolerate everything. You have done a good job today."
"If you want to give them back to your mother, then do it. As for those given by your father, just wait until he asks you to." Gu Chen knew that Father Jian would not ask her to return the shares, and that Mother Jian must have done it behind Father Jian's back.
"As for your grandparents." Gu Chen threw a look at Jian Sangyu. "If you don't want to hurt them, you better defend their shares with your life."
"Ha! Grandparents definitely want me to keep myself safe rather than use my life to protect the money!" Jian Sangyu talked back with a mumble.
Only when her grandparents were mentioned did she showcase a touch of being a little girl. She pursed her lips as if she were trying to show off something.
In this entire world, only her grandparents were treating her with a true heart.
"You're not that silly." Gu Chen said with an ironically flattering tone.
Seeing that Jian Sangyu refused to speak with him and curled up in her seat, Gu Chen also shut his mouth. He had wanted to ask if she had worn the dress on purpose, yet he decided not to in the end.
