Chapter 1 - Prologue: THAT Fire

Tapping her fingers against the glass screen of her cell phone was the only noise sounding in Skyla Fletcher's home. Plans had been made but her self-appointed second-in-command, her best friend, was late. Skyla had multiple things flooding her mind but the mental issues she was burdened with pushed her to being angry. Upset in thinking that he had ghosted her, she tossed her phone across the red couch. It hit a pillow and landed face up, showing her recent calls, several made to an "Alexander the Not-So-Great".

Sky didn't like to but she found herself resigning to the TV remote, hoping something would keep her entertained until this Alexander would finally respond. As she turned on the television, the first station was of a building, burning against the night sky. The flames were brighter than any other light in Chicago and Skyla could feel her heart sink a bit. news like this wasn't rare or uncommon, buy it always went straight to her younger memories. She got lost in the thoughts of past events until finally, something caught her eye. That wasn't just any regular building in Chicago. She knew that building and recognized the layout of the parking lot, the flower beds, the entryway and... "Alex."

"It seems the building had been evacuated earlier due to a supposed gas leak, but firefighters are telling us that there are a few still trapped inside," A blonde news reporter looked frantically, back and forth, from the camera to building. Not too soon after, the workers behind her frantically made their way to clear a path for a group walking out of the building. The red haired Alex, with a child on his shoulders, was supporting a woman holding a baby out of the building. They were covered with soot and exhausted but were now being surrounded by people. After a moment of silence from the news reporter, she finally spoke up again, "It seems we have a resident from the top floor who had heard the trapped family on his own way out of the building. After digging through debris, he finally was able to assist the single mother and her two children outside. There seem to be no remaining citizens inside the building. Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, it isn't just the firefighters working hard that we deem worthy of the title. We can also call this young man, Alexander Venium, a hero."

Skyla's face was soaked and her hand was covering her mouth. Nothing but gasps and the occasional broken name of her best friend could escape her mouth. She shook as she stood, still crying and holding her face, and prepared to rush to Alexander's aid.
