Chapter 99 - Change in the Status Quo

The Military Base is not that much far away since everyone has walked all evening and night yesterday within the relative safety of my claustrophobic-introducing tunnels.

I haven't got a thank you for that. So ungrateful.

Anyway, the last stretch towards the Military Base is rather uneventful, as the only things of interests are corpses of people and monsters. Each side have died for a different reason. People were torn apart by monsters while the monsters themselves got shredded by lots and lots of bullets.

Having a fully functioning Military Base within the Life Zone does make the immediate vicinity safe. At least for now, as the first week after the formation of a Zone is almost always considered as a graceful period.

This is because the monsters, either transformed or transmigrated, are way too busy carving out their territory, hunting down easy preys (usually humans), and building up their numbers. Once they finally have sufficient number, they will launch an all-out attack against the survivors.

It is a certainty.

And I should make sure I have somewhere safe and secure then. The Subway Station should be a good base, as it has served me well previously. It is also an Establishment right now, thus allowing me to do a lot more things there.

I –

The uneventful journey changes quickly when gunfire echoes violently in the air. Several civilians shout out while the Major and her men immediately stand to attention. I am as well due to reflex.

"Put down your weapon. Now!" one of the new comers demands, and judging from his uniform, he is on the same side as the Major. All the new comers are.

The Major notices too. "What is the meaning of this!?"

"Sorry, Major, but we cannot allow you and your men and the people you have brought back to enter the base at the moment," the soldier answers. "Please put down your weapon, Major. Order your men to do the same too. Please. We do not want to have to kill any more of our people."

Something is happening, and I immediately check the pedant, noticing it has lost a lot of its glow. That signals physical danger to my mother. She was fine a couple of hours ago.

I put the pedant away as the Major complies with the demand, allowing her weapon and the weapons of her men to be taken away. I then ponder whether I should teleport away and enter the base myself somehow, but that will destroy all of my recent efforts.

"Thank you, Major. Please come this way," the soldier requests after he lowers his weapon. The other soldiers remain hostile, however.

The Major frowns at that but eventually nods. She has no choice at the moment, and she really wants to know what has happened. Even if they had taken away her guns, she still has her power, and they do not have the mean to take that away.

"Major," I call out, causing a lot of guns to point at me. I hope that she understands my request.

The Major looks at me. "He is my advisor. Allow him to accompany me."
