Chapter 61 - A Blast from the Past

And I am quite surprised to find out who the arsonist is, considering that she should not be here right now, being trapped within the Life Zone. But with so many things have changed in this timeline, I just accept her current presence without further questioning.

It might actually be a good thing since the Major is such a hard ass. I should know because I have come face to face with her in the past before. Or maybe I should say the future. In any case, due to what she did, I have a bone to pick with her.

Unfortunately, she is surrounded by her men, who are shooting at all the incoming monsters without restrain.

It is strange to see Lizardmen and Swamp Trolls joining forces, as they usually have a territorial dispute of sort, but I guess there are plenty of foods to go around right now. But since they are keep charging into line of fires by the army, they will keep getting slaughtered.

They eventually smarten up and withdraw, allowing the gunfire to cease and the army to advance.

Since I am also in camouflage uniform with a similar gasmask on, I can blend in with the troops without much problem. Not sure why I do that, but I guess I am curious to why the army is here.

I doubt that they manage to penetrate the barrier and enter the Life Zone from outside. They are likely already here in the first place, and now, they are methodically exterminating monsters. And rescuing civilians too from the unarmed people at the centre of their defensive perimeter.

"Major!" one of the armed men calls out to make a report. "We have cleared the area of those green things, but the vines are still a major problem. Some of the men have been dragged off by it, and given what we know from the civilians, we can assume that those men are…"

"That is unacceptable," the Major states as flames encircle her. With a gesture of her hand, the flames surge and crash against the encroaching vines, resulting in a titanic explosion.

That display of magical power surprises me, but I suppose that she must have been acknowledged by the System. She had a Fire Mage class in my history, allowing her to do exactly what she just did now, but I think this was way more destructive.

"If they are still alive, find them," the Major demands and then blasts the relentless vines once more, causing yet another explosion. A sea of fire soon follows, blocking off that path. "I am still having hard time controlling this power. How many have obtained theirs?"

"Just one amongst the men, Major," the solider reports. "He appears to be able to reload any weapon instantly. He has demonstrated to be able to create ammunitions out of nowhere."

That is interesting, and I wonder which class or profession such an ability belongs to. It might be from a completely new profession under the new System.

"What about the civilian?" the Major questions without hinting much interest.

"Quite a few, but we will not know for sure how many until we take them all back to base," the soldier responses. "If it is like what we know so far, their abilities will not be combat orientated as they didn't acquire them during combat."

The Major nods at the information and then eyes me. "Why aren't you at your post, soldier? You look unfamiliar. What is your identification, soldier?"
