As the guards left and locked the door behind them, I evaluated the situation. I wasn't particularly afraid. In my visions of Alex's death, he was shot, not eaten by dogs. Personally, I knew that I would die peacefully when I turned 112, which was a long way to go. I was an empath and animals were easy to influence, but what would I do? Turn the dogs against our captors, or give in to their demands and endorse their fake charity, which was funding war and terrorism?
Suddenly, I felt anger rushing in, and I slapped Alex in the face. "Why didn't you tell me about this Mexican woman, and the money you donated to her charity?" I asked in an accusatory manner. "Sorry, Sabina. I just forgot," he replied weakly.
I looked at Alex. He was terrified, and this situation was uncomfortable for him as he suffered from claustrophobia, and he is afraid of dogs. I knew that I should take it easy with him, but I couldn't, my jealousy was driving me nuts. "You forgot about meeting one of our biggest donation recipients and giving her a lot of money? What else did you forget about?" I spat out in a furious rant. "I donated to a charity, which I believed was funding schools for the poor in Mexico. I got duped," Alex replied anxiously.
I realised I had gone overboard with my useless jealousy. There was a time and a place for everything. Arguing with my partner over this Mexican woman, Sandra Santiago, when we were locked up in the basement of a sociopathic drug lord, didn't make any sense.
"I am sorry. I am just stressed," I told Alex, and I hugged him tightly to let him know that I was no longer mad at him. Alex smiled at me and replied: "Well, even though you accused me of being dishonest, I will keep my promise to stay with you until death does us apart."
"I'll hold you to that promise for many years to come. We are not dead yet," I replied bravely. "We need to find a way to escape." I continued.
The door suddenly opened, and I could hear Sandra's voice: "Maybe I can help the two of you with that!" Sandra winked and smiled.
"Sandra? Are you going to help us?" Alex asked in disbelief.
"Yes, I cannot let Jesus and his goons hurt you. Sabina, you have a wonderful husband. I am so jealous of what you have," Sandra said.
"So why are you involved with Jesus Ortega, if you know he is bad?" I asked.
"It's not a matter of choice. I love my family and my people. The only way to keep them safe is to accompany Ortega to bed and keep him happy. He is a terrible man when he is angry," Sandra said and shivered.
"But he won't be pleased if he finds out that you helped us escape?" I asked.
"It's too late to explain everything now. Jesus has a lot of his followers hidden in the favelas around the capital. He is planning to assassinate the Mexican president Esmeralda Ruiz today! We need to get out of here, and hopefully he won't notice in the middle of this chaos", Sandra said with a grave voice.
Suddenly, a massive explosion shook the entire building and knocked me to the ground. As I got up, I exclaimed: "What was that??"
"A nearby explosion from an artillery shell. I tipped off the government that Jesus Ortega was here, and the members of the SWAT team are approaching", Sandra replied.
I closed my eyes, and I had a premonition. I had an idea. I intended to release the ravaging attack dogs and use my empath powers to manipulate the dogs to attack Jesus. I knew that this action was outside of my divine mandate, but I had to save myself and Alex from Jesus, regardless of morality.
"Open the dog cages, Sandra!" I shouted.
"Are you insane?? They'll attack us and eat us!" Sandra remarked.
"Sandra, Believe in Sabina! She can control these dogs using her empathic powers" Alex added in.
Reluctantly, Sandra opened the cages. The attack dogs ignored her. Instead they ran swiftly and hungrily upstairs, to where Jesus Ortega was located.
"Lead the way, Sandra." I urged.
"Follow me to my car, and hide in the backseat!", Sandra replied.
We ran up the stairs, and I saw two of Jesus' men on the ground, having bled to death from the attack dogs' vicious bites. I had expanded the minds of the dogs. Now they were no longer primitive hungry beasts, they had turned into lethal and intelligent silent killers. I felt sickened by the scene and quickly made my way out of the room. The shockwave from another explosion shook the building and brought me back to my senses.
"Hurry up!" Sandra rushed us. I got back on my feet and ran after her. We got to her car, and Alex and I hid in the backseat. Suddenly, we heard agitated screaming and gunfire, and I knew what that meant. Jesus' men had shot at my attack dogs. I hoped that they would reach Jesus before they were shot, but it was no longer in my hands.
Sandra drove up to the unguarded backyard exit gate. She geared on full speed, drove straight through the exit gate, destroying both the metal gate and the roof of her car, instantly turning it into a makeshift convertible!
"That will surely grab their attention!" I exclaimed.
"As will the dogs that you released!" Sandra replied and continued. "But they got other things to worry about." Sandra pointed to the sky, and there were several Mexican government military helicopters on the way.
To avoid the army's attention, Sandra turned the car to drive into the nearby rainforest onto a very narrow and dark road. We stopped at a small hut, perfect as a hiding spot. "Where do you need to go?" Sandra asked.
"We need to go to the Pyramid of the Sun. We have a crucial mission." Alex replied.
"Hmm... The Sun Pyramid is several hours drive away from our location. We are going to need a new car," Sandra explained.
"Money is not a problem." Alex replied.
"Good, I will make some calls," Sandra responded and left us outside the small hut, in the hot and humid afternoon.
