Chapter 5 - A Trip to the Past, 2

*Flashback*

*Wren took a deep breath, preparing her mind for the memories that would soon be flooding into her mind. Once the young woman looked to Wren, the transfer began. Wren closer her eyes as she tried to navigate through the memories. "...David honey, are you coming to bed? I'm feeling really lonely right now!" A woman's voice who was familiar to the David was calling for him outside the restroom. Wren could tell that the man was looking forward to what would come next as he quickly left the restroom and went to her.

Wren pushed past those thoughts and did her best to navigate elsewhere. "Captain Welsh, report your findings from the Western Territories." The man, David, was now in an office, facing a highly decorated, burly looking, military man who was sitting casually behind a large desk. Wren could feel the apprehension David had towards telling this man what he saw before him. "Sir, the clans in the west and neighboring territories seem to be cordial with each other. Ever since the Spiritual Storm in the North last fall, they seem to be trying to help rebuild their areas. They set up treaties and are passive. Even though it has almost been one year, they are progressing at a normal pace and don't seem to be anywhere near progressing with their technology like before the storm."

The man behind the desk, slowly puffed on a cigar, and had a cold and empty look on his face as David spoke. "They are on an island Sir. They can only progress so far without outside intervention. They have been struggling to find a reliable food and water source for the time being. Why are you so interested in their-" *BAM!* The man slammed his hands on the desk in front of David, causing his feeling to shift into panic. "Do you have anything else relevant to report Captain? If you don't, you need to leave my office before you get your head to far in the clouds. You are lucky I have et you had as much slack until now." A sinister smirk crossed the mans thin lips, causing David to become uncomfortable and shiver internally. "No sir. I'll be going now." David stood up to leave, and Wren navigated elsewhere to the his memories.

..."Honey please! It-it's not what it looks like!" Unable to ignore her curiosity, Wren focused on the memory of the woman yelling. David felt anger and sadness during this memory, "David, your leader -guy -whatever he is to you, came by the house asking where you were. I told him you were getting ready to leave to the island for more surveillance t-then he got really upset. He didn't yell, but I heard it in his voice...He left this with me," The woman held a large envelope in her hands then passed it to David.

"I-I wouldn't spy on you Honey. I know you have to get close to those people because of your job, I wouldn't doubt-" "What do you mean my Dear Wife! You have no reason to doubt me. I have never been close to anyone aside from you, yet you still dare to get mad at me?! You were the one who was unfaithful to us, and with him?! But you still think I would remain calm if he just casually dropped by our house? How did he even find us?! Didn't you know I gave him false information about our address? How did he know where we lived Jane? How?!"

David's anger was only growing and getting more out of control. Wren decided she should leave the memory be, but as she was leaving she heard something that made her senses go on high alert, and caused her to freeze in her place. "I-it...I think it was, um Takeda? Remember that old man from the island you told me about? M-Mathers said that he was contacted by the old man, saying he was concerned and didn't like you sniffing where you shouldn't? I am sorry, I-I don't know how..." David, as well as Wren, were taken aback at this news.

"But Elder Takeda always said he enjoyed the visits we made. He even said he felt that his daughter and granddaughter were safe when I was around. What means would he have to contact Mathers anyways and why would he tell me one thing and Mathers something else? Since the Spiritual storm, there is no-well, minimal electricity." David and Jane both remained silent, both showing worry on their faces. As Wren tried to calm her mind and her heart she heard a knock on the door. David turned around startled. "Jane, go to the side room and lock the door. Whatever you hear, whatever happens, dont you dare come out of their until you hear the safe word from me." Jane nodded, quickly kissed her husband, and ran to go hide. Her thin, pink, silk nightgown and robe fluttering around her body as she ran silently up the carpeted stairs.

David slowly approached the door with his gun drawn. The knocking on the door remained consistent, never getting louder. Many thoughts were running through his head, but the main one, was his focus on protecting his wife. He avoided the creaky spot on their hardwood floor, walking over into the light brown carpet to muffle his boot steps even further. There was only a dim light above him in the short foyer just away from the kitchen where Jane had previously been.

David took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a split second to gather his energy, then his eyes suddenly opened and he quickly turned to face Wren. Wren couldn't believe he detected her, she wasn't aware that the military had troops that could utilize their spiritual energy. She stood frozen in shock, readied in a slightly crouched position, but before she could make another move, David turned his gun towards her and shot her in the shoulder without hesitation.

*GASP!* Wren gasped in sharply and opened her eyes and noticed she was back hiding behind the tree. She peeked towards the man the spirit had helped her with, which she now knew was David, and accidentally made eye contact. "Crap!" She turned and started running without a second thought. She could hear the men yelling and running in different directions, but noticed it was only his footsteps and no one else's that were following her. 'Come on Wren, keep it together! Think, think, think...You need to get back to your current time.' Wren looked around the familiar surrounding she grew up in, and had an idea. 'Yes the cave! No one knows about it...'

Wren turned slightly and ran up a steep slope. "Fire!" just after hearing those words, Wren heard bullets rushing past her. 'How do they have guns?! I know they're military but with their numbers there is no way!' She tucked herself as tightly into a ball as she could and rolled down the other side if the slope, into a small lake. "Welsh! Go after her! She will be up for air soon enough. We don't know what she heard..." The man yelled and David obediently followed his commands. Jumping into the cold water after her.

Wren swam as hard as she could until she began to see light towards the surface. She kicked her legs quickly and took a deep breath in after she broke the surface and swam to the edge of the small lake. She found this place by mistake when she was young and often used this to escape. She quickly swam to the small edge and got herself out of the cold water. "There's no way...*Pant Pant* anyone can follow-" *SPLASH!* She looked in front of her in disbelief as David breached the surface and began looking around as he tread water. Wren scurried behind a large rock and crouched down to hide. David continued to stay afloat and looked around at the dimly lit surroundings. "Hey, I know you're in here. I don't intend to harm you. I just want to talk. I've seen you before haven't I? You're from the island, a-and somehow in my mind? Look, I'm just..."

David's voice faltered at the last statement and trailed off. After a few moments of silence, Wren heard the splashing sounds coming closer. 'If he swims this way I'll be trapped! I need to get out of here.' Wren made her aura shrink as small as possible, knowing that if David could find her in his own mind, there's no way he couldn't track her now.*
