Taken aback, Intern B closed her mouth.
Based on the injury itself, Jingyi knew it was going to be difficult.
"Intern B, what do you see?"
"Bleeding is coming from the main arteries to the intestines."
"What would you do? "
"Hmmm—control the bleeding—then—hmm" She stammered as she racked her brain. She suddenly had a mental block that she couldn't remember what she learned at med school.
Here it comes. The OR nurse looked at the flustered intern who was struggling to remember.
Which would it be? The OR nurse thought.
What the hell are you doing here?!
What the heck, Is that what you've learnt for 4 years?
Idiot! Go back to med school.
Hurry up! Do you think this patient has time to wait for your answer?
But none of these came out of Dr. Luo's mouth. Instead, she ordered, "Watch and learn."
Everyone was startled. What happened?
"Clamp. " The scrub nurse who was also waiting for harsh words to fall handed one to Jingyi.
Luo Jingyi stared at the body in front of her and assessed the extent of damage in his abdomen. Multiple perforations of jejunum, bleeding coming from the superior mesenteric artery.
With the limited time in her hands to save his life, she has to stop the bleeding and reconstruct the affected arteries before his body shuts down completely. It was a race against time.
However, luck wasn't on the teenager's side. Because as soon as Luo Jingyi put the clamp on the major bleeder, the anesthesiologist called out, "No pulse."
Jingyi looked into his still open chest and noticed that the heart was giving out and slowing down. Her adrenaline instantly kicks in.
"You're not going to die on me." she murmured as her hand held on the heart and slowly massaged it.
"More blood! Stat!" Sensing the faint beat, she ordered. A minute later, he was back and stable. Only then did Jingyi return her attention to the abdomen.
"Monitor his pulse. I'll start reconstructing the artery. " It must be done with speed. If not, the boy wouldn't have any blood supply to the entire small intestines. Once that happens, the tissue would start to die.
People normally panic in this situation. But a look on her face says she was calm and focused. and like a rock, stood unwavering of her decision to save the child.
It took some time to repair whatever has been damaged inside. Everyone gave a sigh of relief when she finished up.
The interns inside, as well as those who were viewing from an adjacent room, looked at her in a different light. It was full of admiration. Dr. Luo Jingyi proved that speed and skills work hand in hand. With Yun Jian's grave injuries, to begin with, he could have died. On top of that, his heart stopped many times in between surgery but she never gave up. The dying teenager was saved by Dr. Luo's agile hands. Suddenly, each one desired to scrub for her.
"Close him up." Jingyi told her resident. It sounded as a menial task but to be trusted to finish up was a great honor.
"Don't make mistakes. If you do—"
"You'll kill me." She finished.
"Good that you know." She said with a charming smile that can make your heartbeat fast.
Luo Jingyi gave the child a final glance and nodded to Dr. Zhao, the Chief of Surgery who was with the interns observing from the viewing glass.
After that, she walked out.
Standing outside the OR, she murmured, "Grandma, I saved a life."
...
Luo Jingyi changed her scrubs as there was blood all over her. Her waterproof shoes were hosed off to remove the stains. After washing her hands at the scrub sink, she washed her face and fixed her hair which became messy.
She saved a life today. Not the first but definitely not going to be the last. As a young child, while others busied themselves with the four scholarly arts, she was the opposite. She was riding horses and following her grandmother to treat people in villages. However, in ancient times, women practicing medicine wasn't widely accepted. Hence, her father dissuaded her.
When she woke up in this body, she was given a chance to re-discover her dreams. At that time, the host was a 2nd year resident in general surgery. Medicine had interest her even as a child. Given this opportunity, she grabbed the chance. But in the beginning, she struggled. Even if the original body's memories were retained, there were many things new to her. After all, studying medicine is very complex. However, she didn't let it be a handicap. She tripled her efforts and learned. She asked herself a dozen times, why choose a difficult path instead of taking an easier one. She knew the answer in her heart. She's going to be a doctor to save lives. Perhaps it's her way of saving her self.
"You did well Jingyi." she reminded herself.
..
Luo Jingyi grabbed a new pair of masks and went out. As soon as she pushed the doors open, two distressed looking couple rushed to her.
"Doctor, how is my son?"
Jingyi looked at the woman, thinking there's something familiar about her but she couldn't place it.
Shoving it off somewhere, she informed them about their son's condition.
"On exploratory laparotomy, there were multiple jejunal perforations. Additionally, there was 12 x 6 cm size retroperitoneal hematoma. The bleeding—" Jingyi paused when she saw their confused expressions.
"I'm sorry. The bullet injured his small intestines but we were able to stop the bleeding in time. He went in and out but fortunately, your son is a fighter. He'll be put under critical care for observation as there are postoperative complications like a motor deficit of lower limbs and deep vein thrombosis." Luo Jingyi explained. Sometimes she forgets that she needed to use simpler words to explain the situation. The last thing they needed was being overwhelmed with medical terms.
Relief instantly flooded the two people's faces. The woman touched Jingyi's hand and murmured, "Thank you, doctor. Thank you."
Jingyi simply nodded.
"When can we see him?"
"In an hour, he'll be wheeled into the ICU."
"I hope he will be okay." the worried woman muttered.
"He will be." The one who answered was the Chief of Surgery. They never noticed his presence.
He touched the man's shoulder as he gave them reassuring words. "He will be fine Director Choi. He's in good hands. Dr. Luo is the best trauma surgeon in this institution."
Only then did Jingyi remember who they were. Director Choi was a famous director whose movies have been dominating the box office for the last five years. The beautiful woman albeit the messy hair was the CEO of Tattler Media. That's why they were so familiar because the two had been plastered on tv as powerful couples.
Hearing the assurance from Dr. Zhao, the woman's face brightened. "That is good. "
"Why don't you two come to my office first?"
"But we—"
"It will take another hour before you can see him. It's better for you to wait in the office. " she prodded, wanting to escape.
The couple agreed and followed the well-respected doctor to his office.
Jingyi turned and smiled, but it disappeared when her name was called out. The Chief wanted her to go with them.
Damn! She cursed.
