Chapter 3 - Instinct (2)

Fei Wanrou's mother, Mu Weiqin, was born with a weak body. She remembered how her mother told her that there had never been a day when her family shunned her, thinking that her mother was a burden.

Every corner of the house has filled her with memories of contemptuous glances, commonly coming from her uncle, Mu Jin, my mother's brother and the first son of the family.

My mother has kept herself inside the family home. As years passed, her mother grew up and became a beautiful woman.

She remembered how her mother described her past, with eyes softening and a perfunctory smile, as if she hadn't felt the pain and loneliness she went through. However, when she told me how she and her father met, a pleasant laugh escaped her lips causing her eyes to shape like crescents. Such happiness made her brighten up as well.

Mother Mu told her how she treated Father Fei as the light that swept away all her pain, worries, and little fragments of her feelings, sprouting and flourishing in every moment she was with him.

He was the only person that made her feel safe and warm. The only person who always gave her a helping hand and the only one to gaze at her with such affectionate eyes that he was unaware, which, of course, was realized and was taken action upon by a hand in marriage.

The Mu family didn't care, so it was easy for Father Fei to take her mother away. This was the only good thing the Mu family had done, Fei Wanrou thought.

Her mother and father then lived their days in a small courtyard in the mountains and eventually formed their own family, with Fei Wanrou as their eldest daughter.

As Fei Wanrou grew up, her memories were filled with her mother's stories, whether it was the past, her father, or exciting stories that kept her excited all night.

Such days were special to Fei Wanrou. Even though they lived in a small courtyard, she always found peace in her mother's calming and loving presence.

However, the peace that she greatly held importance to break when her mother's weak body became visibly weaker after giving birth to her younger brother. Her father, who was busy from the war, also got home, sustaining heavy injuries.

Seeing her husband finally at home, Mother Mu was assured and had no regrets. She knows that her body couldn't bear it much longer. However, even though such an end was about to happen, she felt that if all the pain she went through was needed for her to have this life today, then it was all worth it.

Her father, who had just arrived after the war, hurriedly embraced his wife, who was in a weakened state, his face full of tears of regret and sadness. Mother Mu looked into his eyes deeply and whispered words that only he could hear.

Little Rou'er, who was beside her holding her little brother, also had her eyes red in tears, letting out sobs that are heart-wrenching. Zhuo'er, still a baby, could feel the gloomy atmosphere and cried out.

"Xiao Rou'er, I know how strong you are. You are very different from me, your mother. That's why I hope you remain strong from my departure."

"All of us have sources of light, and when darkness comes, always remember about them, and you will find peace."

"My time may be short, but such experiences were full. I have no regrets; that's why Xiao Rou'er, live well. "Mother Mu glanced at them with clear eyes filled with affection, and tranquility.

She swept her gaze to Xiao Zhuo'er, holding his face one last time as if blessing him before, finally, her last strength was taken from her by death.

In the end, her mother died, which saddened the whole family. When the news reached the matriarch's home, they only gave a glance as if they didn't have any relations towards her mother.
