As the only part of history that she was interested in was solved, Lys dived into her new life.
She mapped out a plan for her new life: learn the basics of living as an "advanced alien", figure out what her ability is, and, become a professor of history.
The Nibilians who had lost their past when they escaped Earth had a fascination with everything to do with it. The Academy of Science was set up just to research and restore anything related to Earth.
As a person of Earth (mentally at least, or maybe spiritually?) she was positive she could contribute greatly to the cause. Not to mention, when she was translating at various international conferences in the past, she had to learn a bit of everything just so that she could translate more efficiently for the rest of the people attending.
And as for that silly group that seems to want her life? Her family could deal with it. A General for a father, a brother in the Military tech department and the other in intelligence, shouldn't they be able to solve this problem soon? Unless they are not good at their jobs… *snickers*
Nope nope, she couldn't think that way.
They are very powerful people, yep.
They would have no problems catching the buggers.
Or if everything failed, she could always change her name and live on her own… It wouldn't be the first time anyway.
She sighed.
Being stuck at home was really boring…
Exploring the house and the tech involved was done, researching the daily lives of the Nibilians was done. Finding out what happened to Earth, as well as the humans were also done…
What should she do now?
She turned her comms on again and called her brother.
"MATTY!"
"What do you want?"
"I'm bored…"
"…I'm at work."
"Boring… Do you think Mom and Dad would let me go to school?"
"Home-school maybe, I don't think Mom would let you out of the house without a hundred bodyguards"
"…" She didn't want that many people following her if she went to school. Wouldn't it be chaos and she'd be judged by her classmates?
"Are there any classes through the net?" For now, at least, until her parents calmed down.
"… I'll see what I can do." He hung up.
"HRUMFF!" Lys snorted, staring at the screen. Why did he hang up so soon? She hadn't talked enough yet. T.T
She then flounced off to play in the woods. Maybe she could try and catch the fish in the pond. And let it go after. Catch and Release, right? It would be some form of entertainment until everyone got home at least.
She stood at the side of the pond and observed the fish swimming about. Then she took off her shoes and socks and waded in.
Her attempts to catch the fish failed. Badly. The nimble fish always evaded her fingers just by that little bit. Trying to bait them into coming close enough worked but never enough for her to catch them.
Lys soon gave up and sat in the pond to observe the fish. Watching them swim around going about their daily lives was calming, just like when she went snorkelling in the past and watched the marine life going about their day.
The beauty. That serenity.
That Earth was gone, but she would go back someday.
Absorbed in the past, Lys jumped when her comms vibrated.
"Abilities 101. Enter code L1567925Z for enrolment."
She called Mat.
'You didn't send me the link for enrolment! Where am I to enter the code?'
"… Lys? I can't hear you."
Oh, she was still in the pond. Whoops. She quickly got out.
"Mat! Where is the link for enrolment! How am I to enter the code?"
Sigh "… Just press the word 'Abilities 101' or 'enrolment'"
"Oh!" She pressed the word 'Abilities 101' on her comms and it loaded a webpage. Then laughed sheepishly.
"Sorry, I'm so stupid."
"Yes, you are… Where were you earlier?"
"… Why did you agree that I was stupid?" She sulked, then hung up the call. Mat was a meanie. She was so going to tell Mom later.
Fiddling with comms, she enrolled herself in the class and started the class. Her visions blurred as her surroundings changed to that of a classroom.
"Miss Ng?" A lady entered the room and looked at her.
Lys nodded and pointed at herself.
"I'm your teacher for today. You can call me Miss Apple."
Lys nodded and very cooperatively chanted her teacher's name.
"I'll just teach you the basics and we can do a simple test to see which ability you have. You don't have to worry about not having any now as it usually manifests after your 18th birthday."
Lys nodded again.
Miss Apple went on and on about the different types of abilities and what they could do. As she talked, Lys realised that there was a similarity between the ability types and that of the Chinese elements. The main abilities were that of Fire, Water, Earth, Wood (Plant) and Metal.
There were other types of abilities, some more specialised than others, like the more common ice and telekinesis, the rarer ones included fusion, invisibility, etc.
But why did the Nibilians' understanding of the Elements seem so rigid?
Yes, Ice could be an 'element' or ability by itself, but water ability could be condensed into ice if the temperature is lowered enough and into steam, if it's hot enough. It was simply how one saw and manipulated their abilities.
It just depended on how one's imagination worked; their abilities could then transform accordingly. If they could just find a connection, their abilities' potential would be endless.
So, while the plain strength of a specific ability could be limited, how they used it could transcend their ranks.
"Miss Ng? Are you listening? Miss Ng?"
Miss Apple waved her hands in front of Lys, who refocused her eyes back on her.
"Mmmhmmm…"
"As I was saying, why don't you put your hands on this ball over here?" Miss Apple gestured to a crystal ball in front of her.
Wondering how it worked since she was not physically present (mainly because she was too deeply musing instead of listening to the teacher), Lys put her hands on the crystal ball that had appeared in the middle of the room.
The clear sphere turned murky, then shone in a multitude of colours, not settling on any.
Then, blue and green flashed in sequence, before turning back into the multitude of colours.
Lys took her hands off the ball and looked at Miss Apple who was staring at the crystal ball in shock.
"Does that mean I have the power of Water and Wood?"
Miss Apple, who was still staring at the crystal sphere in confusion, looked at Lys, then back at the now clear sphere. She took a step forward and put her own hands forward.
It turned murky, then shone a muted yellow.
'Was this due to her being underage?'
'No, other underage people I've tested stayed clear if they didn't have any ability yet or just their colours just shone through if theirs had developed.'
'Even those that had multiple just shone one after another. None of them showed a myriad of colours like she did.'
Miss Apple smiled and asked Lys if she could call her parents.
Lys shook her head, then offered to call her brother.
After confirming her brother was of age, Miss Apple smiled and nodded.
Dialling Mat's comms, Lys told Mat the teacher wanted to speak to a guardian.
And got promptly scolded for disrupting his work again.
