Chapter 3 - Talent for Volleyball

I did the usual after my alarm woke me up from my sleep. Took a shower, eat breakfast and leave.

School was just like yesterday but with more work and less interaction with Marco and his friends.

Biology is my favourite subject which is also the second last subject. I like learning about the parts of the body and their function. I actually thought of being a nurse, doctor or a sports therapist. Our lesson today were focused on talking about mitosis and meiosis. The way how our cells divide to make another cell or produce gametes was pretty interesting to me. I was enjoying it until the bell suddenly rang. It's time for gym class. Athletes excel in this class because they're used to using their bodies. I'm not weak but like what I said, I don't enjoy it.

Gym class today was just open gym. Students can do whatever they want. We can play volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis and more.

As I was walking on the side of the courts, a volleyball came flying straight at me. Someone shouted "head's" but with my fast reflexes, I was able to dig the ball up. Everyone who saw what happened were shocked. They couldn't believe that me, a thin and small guy was able to dig such a fast ball. I ran as fast as I could after I dug the ball up. But I was stopped at the door by a somewhat familiar man who looks to be about the same age as my dad. "What's your name kid?" the guy said. "Ahm, I-I'm Sebastian LeClaire, why'd you ask? And can I ask who you are?" It took about 5 seconds before he answered my question. "My name is Logan Morgan, and I'm the coach of DJC volleyball team. I think you should join our volleyball team. You seem to have a talent for it." I moved back as I heard him say that I have a talent for volleyball.

—Flashback—

When I was younger, my dad and I used to play volleyball a lot, he said he was the ace spiker of their college team before. I really looked up to him and told him that I will one day become like him and even be greater than him until I saw a picture of their college team. He wasn't in the picture. Or should I say he wasn't even part of the team. I remember asking him about it. "Dad, why are you not in the picture? We're you injured?" I remember his face looking shocked and got mad at me. After that, we didn't play volleyball nor talked about it anymore. I realized that, it's really impossible for someone short like my dad to be part of a volleyball team where height can be considered a talent.

—back to reality—

"Are you not interested in joining the volleyball team?" Mr. Morgan asked. Although volleyball is something that I really love and continued to practice even without my dad, I know that it's pointless because I'm also short. "I'm sorry sir, I'll just become a laughingstock there." I was about to walk away when he suddenly said that he knows my father. "You know, your father was a really great player. He was one of the best and had a bright future for volleyball." I looked at him confused. Now that I think about it, I remember seeing his face in the picture. "You didn't know that your father was supposed to be the ace of our college team?" "He was supposed to be? What do you mean? He wasn't even part of the team." I blurted out with a louder voice than usual. "He got injured before our very first game. He was beaten up by our own teammates. They think he was a threat to their positions. They said that why would someone like your father who's a lot shorter than the other players will be given the chance to play and even be part of the first 6. That's the reason why they gave him a beating and that caused his career to end." I was shocked, sad, I don't know. I don't know what to feel when I learned about what happened to my dad. "So that's why he got mad at me when I asked why he wasn't in the picture" I thought to myself.

"Mr. Morgan, do you think I really have the talent and skills for volleyball?" I asked with a somewhat shaky voice. "Yes you do Sebastian, I know that you've been training all these years and it's showed with that excellent dig."

"Mr. Morgan, I've decided."
