Chapter 41 - Cursed Chains

Shobek sat carefully on the bed as he watched Kasey pace around the room. He could tell she wanted to ask more questions but was questioning whether she wanted to know. He wasn't surprised in the slightest about it. Shobek softly sighed and knocked his anxiety aside as he tried to ease Kasey's curiosity and fear.

"Did you know... That I was created by humans?"

Kasey look up surprised, she carefully inspected Shobek's sad expression as he stared at the ground.

"Not biologically, but through their wishes and desires. That was how I came to be. Much like many other gods and demons."

Kasey kept quiet as she slowly walked over to the couch and sat down, her eyes gently gazing at Shobeks slumped figure.

"My name wasn't Shobek either. It was given to me after I...fell. I would say died, but, entities like me, cannot be killed. Not by humans anyways. But there is a way to...I suppose, ban us from the surface."

Kasey waited, but Shobek stayed silent. His eyes grew more and more distant as he recounted his past. "What...happened?"

Shobek looked at Kasey but didn't seem to register her, "I was lonely. I was young, perhaps a few centuries old when I finally tried to make friends. To the human eye, I would've looked like a child. I didn't understand why it was a rule to never appear before a human until it was far too late. They once worshipped me, brought me food, charms, and money... but I had mistaken their actions as love for me. I was too naive."

Shobek looked back down at the ground as his body trembled with rage, "They captured me. Claimed me to be a demon, and then slaughtered me. I felt each stab, each slice, and every burn as they disemboweled me and dismembered me. Then burned every section till I was nothing but ash. They found out, that if even a single nail survived, I could slowly heal and come back. So they were very meticulous. They left nothing left and were sure to torture me for hours. All because I tried to play with one of their children.

So, I was sent down here. I was so weak, that those other demons took turns at me as I again suffered years of torment. You see, I was created to be pure, bring fortune and strength to others. But... I couldn't take it anymore... So, I eventually let myself go. I let my hate and anger rule my conscious. And I took my revenge."

Kasey stared, horror etched across her features as she listened to his words. She understood some humans were evil, but to be that vile? Is it possible??

Shobek slowly shook off the memories and finally looked up, light returning to his eyes, though a deep sea of darkness remained. "My revenge ended with half the demon population killed. As I am sure you have guessed. I didn't discriminate between victims. I barely remember the events. At one point, I just stopped and found myself in a field of corpses. Then the king and a few of his damn minions appeared. And I was chained within a blink of an eye. Most of my power was locked away. What I have now, is only a portion of what I used to have."

Kasey was hesitant but slowly asked, "If most of your power is locked away, then why is everyone so terrified of you?"

Shobek gave Kasey a small smile, "because I am still stronger than most demons here. Though I am no longer any match for the king."

Kasey paused, "if you had all your power, you could beat him?"

Shobek looked away, "I have a higher chance than anyone else."

Another moment paused before Kasey continued her questions, "how do we unlock your power?"

Shobek looked up at the ceiling and furrowed his brows slightly, "I... am not entirely sure. But, 19 years ago, a quake suddenly ran through hell, and balls of fire rained down from our sky. And I felt my chains weaken and some of my powers return. It was caused by something that happened on the surface..."

Kasey tilted her head slightly, "what was it?"

Shobek slowly looked at Kasey and met her eyes, "Your birth."
