Chapter 42 - Docked

Kasey blankly stared at Shobek as he slowly stood and walked to the hall door, his hand resting on the knob as he sighed.

"When...I felt it, It took me six years to escape hell, and I searched everywhere. I could feel myself drawing closer to the key of freedom, and that's when I saw you. As soon as I met your eyes, it clicked. But in my frantic search, I didn't realize the king sent his dogs after me. I only got a glimpse of you before being dragged back down into the depths of hell. The king... was not happy. And I felt his wrath each day he came down into his dungeons to torment me. He let me go after three years. He said that since I led him to you, he had cut my six-year sentence in half. If I had known I was being followed, I never would have sought you out. But from my carelessness, you were targeted. And for that, I am truly sorry..."

Kasey stared at Shobek in alarm, confusion racing through her mind as her blood was pumping through her veins, "you were there that day, weren't you? When we crashed and the car overturned."

Shobek hesitated, his eyes glancing at her reddened face, "I was...But I wasn't the only one. I wasn't the one that caused the crash."

Kasey glared at Shobek, he KNEW who caused the crash. Who was responsible for her father's death.

He had been there.

"Who else was there? Who did it?" Kasey stepped closer, her hands tightened into fists as she waited to hear who she needed to kill.

Shobek watched her composure, anymore information and she might sink the ship. "You aren't ready to know who."

"Like hell, I am not ready!! I will kill the sick bastard!" Kasey shouted back, Shobek sighed and opened the door.

"If you even attempted to kill him, you would most certainly die."

Kasey stared angrily at the door Shobek had closed behind him after leaving. Deep down, she knew she was no match for anybody. A lesser demon could kill her easily. But reason wasn't exactly the loudest voice in her head right now. All she could hear was her boiling rage and the need to avenge her father. Without thinking she stormed over to the desk and picked up the chair, throwing it at the door. Her body moved on its own accord to let off some steam, whether it was kicking or punching, or throwing.

Shobek was sitting at the makeshift bar in the captain's quarters. The captain gave him full permission on his way out to check on his men. So Shobek happily drank whatever fits his fancy. Although he was away from his and Kasey's room, he could distantly hear her cries of rage as she wrecked whatever she probably got her hands on. Though whatever she destroyed he would have to pay for, it was much better than her running off to get killed.

Though telling her who it was could help her see how much stronger she needs to get. Shobek shook his head, no, she is far too impulsive to stop and think about what she is doing. Or how strong her enemy is.

Shobek took another swig of the whiskey glass, his body dropping a little as the alcohol coursed through his system. "I really shouldn't be drinking."

A burly voice replied to him from the door, "Aye, we be land'n soon."

Shobek peaked at the Captian as his eyeballs rolled around in their sockets. His upper face was nothing but bone while his lower face still had flesh concealing most of his cheeks and jaw. A black curly beard flowed halfway down his chest.

"Hello, Captian." Shobek gave him a respectful nod before taking another swig of the whiskey. "You have a fine collection of booze, by the way."

The Captian chuckled, "suppose ya' mean had since half it be gone now."

Shobek gave him an apologetic smile, "I do apologize for that. I never was a heavy drinker till recently."

The Captian bobbed his head toward the door, "Ye lady frien' be given ya' trouble then?"

Shobek scowled slightly, "a little I suppose. I believe she has broken some furniture as well. I will leave some gold pieces here with you for it if that's alright."

The Captian nodded, "Aye, that'll do. We be dock'n rather soon so best prepare."

Shobek sighed and nodded, quickly standing and leaving the bottle on the counter as he fished out gold pieces from his pocket. "If that's not enough I'll bring you some more later."

Afterward, he strode to the door and nodded again in the Captain's direction before heading back to his shared room with Kasey. By now, whatever was happening inside was once again quiet and Shobek slowly knocked on the door. After a moment of waiting, he tried to push the door open, but it didn't budge.

"Kasey? Can you please unblock the door?" Shobek listened intently to the inside of the room, but it was still quiet. Shobek heaved a sigh before putting his body weight on the door to slowly shove it open, his frown increasing at the sight of the couch being halfway pushed against the door. "Really?"

"Locked doors don't work against you, so I thought I'd try this method. Doesn't seem to have worked though." Kasey called from somewhere further in the room.

Shobek sighed and repeatedly rammed against the door to finally wedge himself inside. His eyes scanned the mess before him. "I hope you realize I have to pay for any damages."

"Good. You're probably way too rich anyway."

"Not really. No one wants to hire the dragon of destruction believe it or not." Shobek looked at Kasey as she remained sitting on the bed, hugging her knees. After not receiving a reply he huffed and started to move the furniture back to its original places, mentally marking what was broken. "Women sure are expensive aren't they?"

Kasey still didn't reply to him, opting to carefully scrutinize his work.

Shobek frowned at the cold shoulder but knew it was to be expected. Though it certainly wasn't enjoyable. "We will be docking in a bit. We should start packing our supplies and prepare to head out. And I know you don't like me right now, but please remember, you need to stay by my side unless you want to be kidnapped. Alright?"

Shobek met Kasey's stubborn glare as he waited for an answer.

Kasey finally tsked and averted her eyes, "fine."

Shobek gave her a warm smile, "good girl."

"I'm not a dog."

Shobek frowned and went to pack their things, "Are you sure? Dogs leave messes for their owners don't they?"

Kasey scowled, "I'm not a dog, and even if I was, you wouldn't be my fuckin owner."

Shobek scoffed, "and who would be your owner if not me?"

"Nobody, obviously."

"You'd want to be a stray dog with little food and water? No place to stay?"

"Better than being your pet."

Shobek gave Kasey a pout, "I'll have you know many people would love to be my pet!"

Kasey scoffed, "yeah right."

Shobek grumbled, "It IS right..."

Kasey gave him a small smile, "uh-huh, sure."

"What? You don't believe me?" Shobek gave her an even more exaggerated pout.

Kasey let out a small giggle, "no-no, I totally believe you."

Shobek turned back to gathering their stuff, "sure ya do."

Kasey watched him with a relaxed smile. Shobek's heart grew lighter knowing he got her to smile, even if it was a small, fleeting one.

Kasey wrapped her cloak tighter around herself as she followed Shobek off the ship, her eyes carefully looking over the dock and the town they were heading towards. The night sky was bathed in the red light from the town, people bustling around as the two carefully walked together. Shobek's eyes scrutinize every person they pass. As long as they didn't run into HIM, they should be able to make it through this town and be in the designated fly zones.

Though Shobek was trying to rush them through the town, Kasey forced him to slow his pace by lagging so she can carefully look over the town. Kasey had gotten used to seeing all sorts of demons, or so she thought. But each animal person that walked by caught her attention to the point where some of them noticed her gawking. Shobek carefully stood by her and watched anyone that even came near them. Kasey didn't notice his constant glaring and snarling at strangers as they continued to walk, and if she did, she didn't let it show or slow down her need to explore the new area. What did catch her attention, is how every female in the street seemed to be making dreamy eyes at the man next to her. A tinge of jealousy hit her as she continued her way through the streets.

"I didn't realize you were this popular." Kasey finally said after Shobek ignored another seductress that tried to get his attention.

"As I said, A LOT of people would love to be my pet." Shobek gave her a small smile before returning his patrolling gaze to the street around them.

"Hmph." Kasey fought off her surprise. Of course, he would be popular. He's sexy, strong, reliable, and dangerous. Even I would fall for him. Kasey again peered around at the women who were glancing at Shobek, if she were in their shoes, she probably would be kissing him with her eyes too.

"Let's keep moving, the sooner we get to a fly zone the sooner we get to safety." Shobek carefully nudge Kasey to quicken her pace, which she reluctantly did.

"Why aren't we allowed to fly here anyways?" Kasey glanced at a few winged demons that were flying above them. "They get to fly, so why can't you?"

"I no longer have a flying license for here."

"You need a flying license?? Wait, 'no longer'? You used to have one?"

"I used to be a regular customer here, so I got a flying license to make transportation easier, but it expires every six months and you have to buy a renewal. It's just for a few districts though, not everywhere."

Kasey looked around and counted ten different bars and brothels that were fighting each other for customers; she looked back at Shobek and frowned, "You used to be a regular, huh?"

Shobek winced at this realization and glanced down at Kasey, "Please don't fight me on this right now."

Kasey rolled her eyes and glared emptily at one of the whore-houses they were passing, "uh-huh."

Shobek grimaced but kept his eyes straight as he kept his hand firmly planted against Kasey's back to keep leading her down the street. The sooner they leave the better. And the less likely Kasey will add to her list of 'things-to-fight-about'.
