Chapter 6 - Within the Alley

The ball of light drifted slowly along, it's light illuminating the dim alley. The small human child stumbled as she reached out to touch the glowing orb. As she reached out with both hands to grasp the shining globe, something jumped out from underground, landing near her. The little girl was so startled, that she missed the floating globe.

A small hunched form crouched near a dark hole in the ground. It's skin was a grayish blue, and it appeared to be lacking of both hair and fur. The end of it's right arm was void of fingers or even a palm. Instead, it's forearm resembled the shape of a wooden club. It's yellow eyes gleamed as it glared at the human girl with clear distrust in it's eyes. It shuffled backwards and flashed it's fangs at the human child.

Trembling, the human toddler stumbled backwards. Everything that she had seen was already so overwhelming, that this new terrifying creature that suddenly appeared before her was just too much for her to handle. Falling back onto her rump, she began to cry.

The nonhuman creature stared at her suspiciously as her sobs shook her whole body. He could taste her fear in the air and knew that her fear was genuine. But he had been taught that humans were liars and deceivers, that they were murderers that destroyed everything around them. He had been told to stay away from humans, for it was well known that humans could never be trusted. But he could sense that this human girl who sat before him had no negative emotions or ill intentions towards him, nor did she pose any threat to him.

As he stared at her while tears streamed down her face, his hearts went out to her. He felt pity for this poor human girl, who was so obviously frightened. She was so different from what he had been taught about humans. She wasn't cruel or vicious... She wasn't conniving and devious.. she was just a small child, just like him, who was scared and alone.

As he marveled at the strangeness of how different she was from other humans, he felt something stir within his two hearts.

He wasn't sure what it was that he felt, but he knew that he didn't want her to cry anymore... he didn't want her to be afraid, especially of him.
