Chapter 5 - Sorrow and revenge

The smaller of the rabid beasts lunged towards Jason with the power of a freight train, Jason wasn't just standing in one spot, instead a red aura started to glow from his blade. When the first coyote was within striking distance, Jason's sword moved as if it was faster than a bolt of lightning. "Rage Slash!" Jason's yell echoed through the woods, resembling a mad beast.

Because of the group's previous fights against some coyotes, the three were moving like a well oiled machine after gaining some levels. After hearing Jason's shout, Jeremy would strike from the side with his axe. "Helm splitter!" Jeremy called out while the edge of the axe glowed with a brown light just a split second before making a clean cut down the closest coyotes head.

Within minutes the pack was taken out and the group was taking a minute to rest. The three were sitting on a log that had fallen nearby. Jeremy was looking through his status screen looking at some of his new abilities, Jason had just finished taking a drink out of a canteen that was getting low so he decided to find a stream to fill it back up. Katelyn wasn't really doing anything particular just looking off in the distance daydreaming and hadn't quite noticed it was getting a little dark out.

As Jeremy and Katelyn were busy doing their own thing and not paying attention there were two sets of eyes looking at their backs almost like they were looking at a feast. Without making a noise the eyes moved and were revealed to be two wolves. The first wolf was small, around 3 foot long, black fur covered it's back and it's legs while a clean white spot sat on it's chest and started to shape it's lower face. The larger of the two wolves was black all over except on it's paws and jaw which were stained in blood.

The two wolves attacked Jeremy and Katelyn in that order. Pinning both of them down while tearing into the sides of the two party members. The greedy, smaller wolf had decided to go after Jeremy because of its hunger, but had made a small miscalculation as Jeremy was able to knock it off of him with a hard smack to the side of the body. The small wolf yelped in surprise at the sudden pain but quickly rolled to help recover and start a second charge.

Jeremy grabbed his axe that was a few feet from him and swung it down with a loud yell as he was trying to get Jason's attention. "Where did these things come from? And what is taking Jason so long to get back." He shouted without realizing it had been but 5 minutes since Jason had left the two. Katelyn was screaming in pain but was unable to get the larger wolf off of her as she watched in horror as her health bar was draining slowly

The more she struggled the worse her situation seemed to be, with every bite her health bar was dropping by around 30 points along with the bleeding effect that had appeared after the second bite. She screamed and flailed under the wolf but to no use. Jeremy was still busy with the small wolf that attacked him.

(At the same time the two were getting attacked)

Jason was in the middle of filling the three canteens for the party when he heard the yells coming from where he had left the two. "Shit that's just my luck." Jason said to himself as he took off running through the woods dodging through trees and trying to keep himself from falling when he would run into a soft patch of mud as the screams were getting louder.'I'm almost there, just hold on for a few more seconds.' Jason thought. He was around 1,500 feet from the party when he first heard the screams and was approaching the clearing at a rapid pace but it still didn't feel quick enough to him

(Back in the clearing)

Jeremy was fending off the small beast to the best that he could by himself, but he was struggling because he was slower than the wolf but every time his axe made contact he would get a second to glance at his health bar and right underneath his was Jason's and at the bottom was Katelyn's which was dropping fast. She was already below a quarter of her total health. Jeremy started to panic even more when he heard rustling from where the two beasts had come from.

A blurry figure bolted out of the woods and rushed towards them, the wind whistled past Jeremy as he finally realized the figure was actually Jason who had just unsheathed his sword. Rage was clearly written all over his face, or at least the small glace Jeremy was able to see of it in between exchanging blows with the small wolf.

Only a fraction of a second had passed since Jason entered the clearing, the larger wolf was still in the middle of taking a bite when the sound of metal rubbing against leather hit it's earns, distracting even if only for a second, it gave Jason an opening as he stabbed the blade deep into the beast's side between two ribs.

The beast was shoved to the side as Jason followed with the momentum equal to that of a charging boar. Katelyn was able to crawl to the log she was sitting at just moments before and open her status screen.

She quickly opened her inventory and was trying to take out her recently unlocked grimoire of healing. It took Katelyn about a 30 seconds to get attuned with the book, she started chanting the first spell she came to. The spell 'Minor healing light' started to glow on the page, each word that was said would light up as they were spoken so the spell's cast time would depend entirely on the person who was saying the spell. This was bad news for Katelyn and she was having a hard time breathing, let alone speaking so the casting was going slowly at best.

Jason was still Tangled up with the large wolf, cuts were appearing on both bodies as the fight drug out. The wolf would connect with Jason's shield part of the time only because he wasn't used to using it yet. "Damn it sooner or later I need to get used to using this thing or it was only a waste of gold otherwise." Jason mumbles to himself after the last scratch had cut a few inches deep into his left arm.

"It's time to finish this " Jeremy says while switching the grip on his axe and shifting his weight to the ball of his left foot as he baits the wolf in close before twisting his upper body with his swing as the beast leaps forward. Jeremy's axe smashes through the soft belly of its target as he spins his whole body, delivering a devastating blow to the wolf's health points and causing it to disappear. "That was close…" Jeremy sighs while taking a second to regain his composure and get a fast breath. "But we're not of the woods yet."

Katelyn had finished her first spell, regaining 1 HP every 3 seconds, unfortunately she hadn't been able to get rid of the bleeding effect, meaning she was still losing 1 HP every 6 seconds over all. The simple spell had taken her 10 seconds to cast.

Lightning cried like hundreds of birds screeching suddenly filled the air at the same time Jason's blade was slicing through the wind as if the lightning was guiding it. "Lightning stream." Jason's voice roared out but was drowned out by the screeching. Jason's skill was able to damage the wolf while simultaneously paralyzing the beast in place. After the blue flash a steady red glow was building up inside Jason's chest.

"Basic flame manipulation: Dragons breath." Jason screamed while forcing the built up breath in his lungs out as fast and hard as humanly possible. Once the hot air escaped his lungs it sparked to life violently in a cone of raging flame. The fire was almost life like, filled with every ounce of anger Jason held inside himself at that moment. Once the flames danced on the wolf's fur it turned into a living inferno that burned everything in its path with only one thought, destruction.

Once the fire was done burning after only a short few seconds the wolf's burnt body was revealed before disappearing into thin air like all the beasts before it. "It's about time you overgrown mut." Jason panted with a hot ragged breath. Once gaining his breath back he was able to go check on the other two members of his group.

Jason walked over to where Jeremy was standing over Katelyn's faintly glowing body. During both of the guys' fights Katelyn's health bar had dropped to only the single digits and was still falling as the effects of the spell were wearing off. " I don't have enough time to chant the words again." Katelyn coughed as the three looked at the health bars in the corner of their eyes.

The second that the health bar hit zero katelyn's body started to glow as cracks spread across her figure, within a split second of the cracks covering the body she disappeared into a mix of broken glass like pixels that faded from reality as soon as they were separated. The only things left behind were the backpack she was carrying with her bow and grimoire left inside.

In that moment not only was her body destroyed, her name was erased from the party as if it had never been there in the first place. Deep within himself, Jason felt something break, but all he could muster to say was a simple but heartless sounding sentence "At least she is back with her family and doesn't have to have to put up with this world anymore." Jeremy looked towards his older brother and could tell that even though he sounded mean he wasn't sure how to deal with the situation at hand and was trying to hold himself together. "Let's call it quits for the day, we can finish up everything later once we regroup." And with that the brothers left the woods with much on their minds and hands never to far from the weapons they carried.
