Doren looked down at the limp body in front of him. His vision began to blur as he put the knife back in his belt. Looking over at Katrina he smiled with tears in his eyes.
She walked over to him and put her hands on his shoulders. "Listen," she said in a calm tone, "you need to focus now. We need to find the girl's papers." she left him and started ripping apart his desk.
"I.. I actually killed him." Doren whispered. He looked down at the blood falling from the tips of his fingers. "I can't believe I actually killed him."
"Focus, Doren." Katrina said as she pulled a big folder from the last drawer she pulled. "I think this is it." she tucked it away in her blouse and grabbed his arm. "Now let's go. They probably heard you blow the door." she tried pulling him with her but he yanked away.
Kneeling down to the man, Doren pushed his eye lids down. He turned and followed Katrina out the door.
"What was that all about?" Katrina asked, starting a run down the hall.
He followed her down the hallway and responded, "It's a sign of respect."
Katrina halted. Snapping around she stomped her foot. "You respect him? You realize how many girls he killed. Or even worse, how many girls he raped! You don't show a man like that any sort of respect."
Doren stepped back. It was an obvious sign he had over stepped some sort of boundary. "I've never done this before. I have never even seen another person's blood. It just seemed appropriate." he responded back to get, attempting to stay calm and collected.
"We honestly don't have time for this," she snapped back to him and began running back down the long hall. Doren followed close behind.
As they were running, a couple of the man's guards ran up on them. "Halt!" they yelled, drawing their swords. A guard behind the front two drew him arrow.
"What are you doing back here?" one asked tiptoeing closer to the suspicious duo.
Katrina's gaze went to Doren and Doren returned it. Lifting an arm up, his hand began glowing green. The men, being trained professionals, saw this and began backing up. Katrina got behind Doren as a tunnel of wind blew the three guards to the back of the hall.
The men crashed through the wall. With the hall filling with smoke, Doren flicked his wrists and made the smoke disperse. Doren and Katrina crawled through the hole and over the three guards. Behind them they heard more enter the back hall and run to their boss.
Katrina waved to Doren as they snuck through the back alleys of Mertin. Since it was a farm town, there wasn't much alley to traverse through. They decided to stop at the farmhouse that Doren trailed them too the night before.
Huffing and panting the two sat at the circular table. Katrina took the folder out of her blouse and set it down. She looked at Doren, collecting herself to speak.
"You see this," she said, "this is every single woman you saved. These are women who have been sold," she separated the papers, "These are women who are still hidden in the restaurant," she set the stack next to the first, "and these are women who have been either killed or escaped."
Doren looked at the three stacks in front of him. He put a hand on the stack that had the women killed in it. The first one of top was Katrina's papers.
"They were going to kill you?" Doren asked and looked at her.
She laughed and crumbled up her profile. "I got returned. Of course I was going to be killed." she smirked and put the stack of Killed women away. She picked up the stack of the women still at the restaurant. "These are who we need to free." she stated as she slid it to Doren.
With a stack of thirty plus pages, Doren flipped through. The labels the man had for them were written with darker charcoal lines. They read either, 'Dark Girls', 'Sale Girls', 'Timers', and 'Waitresses'. The Dark Girls must have been the ones hidden in the hallway.
"So how do we go about saving them?" Doren asked setting the stack back on the table.
Katrina sipped on her coffee from earlier that morning. "We go back. Chances are that we will be able to slip right into there. The confusion of the ordeal earlier is going to make a panic. No one will be able to leave." she took another sip before continuing, "So we will go in there while the village guards do their investigation and point them to all of these girls." she pointed to the pile of the girls who were in the establishment.
"And what about the girls who have already been sold?" Doren asked leaning forward, his elbows now resting on the table.
Katrina stayed silent for a moment, the edge of the cup resting on her lip. "That's Meko's task. He and I spoke last night and he wants to be the one to save all the girls saved around Etern. I'm taking you to Fort Harft on Shift Island."
Doren looked at her with suspicion written all over his face. Hesitantly, he asked, "Why?"
She smiled and set her cup down, "Well," she said leaning back, "have you ever heard of assassins?" He perked up and nodded. "Good," she continued, "because we want you to become one. You did awesome today, minus the loudness. And your hesitance. But you have what it takes."
Meko pushed through the door at that time, panting. "Phase three." he held his chest, trying to catch his breath, "Come on, you two."
They both got up and followed Meko back into town. When they got to the restaurant, the gaurds were already all over the place. There were probably a dozen outside, and they had no idea how many were inside or around the building.
"Doren," Meko said, "you still have blood all over your clothes. There's no way you can go anywhere near here. So stick to the rooftops. Just quiet your steps. Be ready to help us if need be." His attention went to Katrina. "All we have to do is drop those papers off."
With that Doren was dismissed. He climbed into a roof and watched the restaurant from across the road. Meko and Katrina walked down the street, her arm wrapped around his. When they were in front of the entrance doors, they stopped and started talking to the guards that were stationed there.
A couple moments passed when one of the guards turned and walked inside. While he was waiting to see what would happen after the guard returned, he looked around.
The fields were as far as his eyes could see. The animals seemed to be in the hundreds. Enough to feed the entire population of Etern for a year. He relaxed there for a second, until returning to gaze down at his comrades.
Another man had returned while he was looking away. He had dark grey hair put.into a bun. Two swords lay on his side. For a moment's notice, the man's eyes met Doren's from atop The rooftop. Doren sunk back behind the top and laid up against it.
After a couple more seconds, Doren peaked back over. All three who had been talking before were now gone. Frantically, he looked back and forth, but couldn't see them. He needed a better view so he climbed up to a different, taller building.
Finally, he found the three over on the side of the building, where the holes were created by the guards. The two guards that Doren threw through the wall were there, getting their wounds mended to.
A sickening feeling over rode Doren. He squinted his eyes, and just like that, they were all arguing. But he couldn't make out what they were saying. All of a sudden, Katrina was taken by the guards.
Doren jumped over the tip of the roof he was standing on, and slid down it. He had to get over to her as fast as he could. When his feet touched the ground, he took off as fast as he could.
Around, the corner, Meko held his hand up, "No, no, no," he said quickly, "go back, we have it controlled."
It was too late though, the guard turned to Meko. And past Meko was Doren in his bloody clothing. The guard pointed to him, his jaw dropping. The guard then quickly reached for his Shockstaff and before he could grab it, Doren was leaping towards him.
In mid air, Doren swung a hand towards the guard and used the air to slap him back into the wall once more. The man with the two swords grabbed them at his sides and drew them towards Doren. A guard that was holding Katrina let go of her, shocked by his fellow guard being throne through the wall.
The man with the two swords ran at Doren. Wide eyes, Doren grabbed the bloody knife at his side. "Are you the man that cause this commotion?" he growled gripping his blades tighter.
"Damn right I am." Doren laughed, wondering if he had gotten in over his head.
"I, Captain Wanderoo place you under arrest. If you surrender now, you will be tried by court. If you do not surrender, we will be forced to take matters further." he said, lowering his guard. "Do you agree to put your blade down?"
Doren looked back at Meko, who had an arm in front of Katrina. This was a chance for them to slip away, while the Captain and guard's attention was drawn to Doren. Now, if they would take the hint.
Before he knew it he was surrounded on all sides. With more probably just around the corner, time for Doren seemed to be drawing near. He had to think quick on his feet.
The only was he was going to get out of this is if he used his powers. So far he had pretty good control of it. Every time he had released his power it was accurate and powerful enough to do what he needed. Maybe this was a good chance to find the perfect control over this ability. All he needed to do was survive.
